The grind of the IPL and two months of relentless technical refinent with Pravin Amre had transford Rocky.

His batting stat sat at 37/100, a hard-earned climb reflecting his growth under the Master's gaze.

But even a machine needs oiling.

Amre sir, seeing the slight tremor of fatigue in Rocky's stance, had been firm:

"Too much of anything is poison, Rocky. Go ho. Breathe. If you don't find the joy in the ga, the technique won't matter."

Before leaving, Rocky did his due diligence.

He reached out to the Mumbai Indians (MI) Managent, thanking them for the off-season support.

They were already eyeing him as a long-term asset, sending him off with a reminder to "stay fit" and a bag of the latest team rchandise.

He hopped on a flight from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar.

___

As the plane touched down at Biju Patnaik International Airport, the transition from the humid salt-air of the Arabian Sea to the earthy, familiar scent of Odisha felt like a physical embrace.

As the wheels of the Indigo flight screeched against the tarmac, Rocky felt a knot in his stomach that no 150kmph yorker could produce.

The mont Rocky stepped out of the arrivals terminal, the "celebrity" reality hit him.

The sliding glass doors of the arrivals terminal hissed open, and the sound hit him like a physical wall.

It wasn't just his close aides.

It was a sea of fans, local news caras, and a garland of marigolds so thick it nearly obscured his vision.

"ROCKY! ROCKY! ROCKY!"

It wasn't the organized chanting of the Mumbai Indians fan clubs.

This was chaotic.

Thousands of people had squeezed into the terminal.

Local college students were standing on luggage trolleys, waving handmade banners that read "Odisha's Kohinoor is Ho."

A swarm of local reporters from OTV and Kanak News surged forward, their heavy cara lights blinding him.

"Rocky! One word for the youth of Cuttack!"

"How was the experience of sharing a dressing room with the God of Cricket?"

"Did Ricky Ponting really call you a 'most special talent'?"

An elderly airport janitor dropped his mop just to clap as Rocky passed.

A young girl, no more than six, was hoisted onto her father's shoulders, waving a hand-drawn picture of a cricket bat.

Rocky stopped to sign her poster, and the crowd surged forward like a tidal wave, forcing airport security to form a human chain around him.

After signing, Rocky then felt a hand on his shoulder.

It was a massive airport security guard, but instead of pushing him through, the guard leaned in and whispered, "Bhai, gote selfie?(Brother, one selfie?) My son is your biggest fan."

Even the law was starstruck.

Rocky smiled, posed for the blurry snap, and began the slow trek to the exit, signing everything from scrap paper to a fan's bare forearm.

___

Before his convoy could even exit the airport periter, a fleet of white SUVs with governnt plates intercepted him.

The word had co down from the top:

the State wanted to honor its hero.

The convoy to the State Guest House was led by a police pilot car, sirens wailing, a sound usually reserved for ministers.

The eting with the Chief Minister was brief but heavy with prestige.

Inside the grand hall, the Chief Minister stood waiting, the atmosphere was formal yet warm.

The room was thick with the scent of lilies and expensive sandalwood.

The Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik didn't give a formal handshake like he always did.

He placed a hand on Rocky's shoulder, looking at the caras with the pride of a father.

"In the maps of Indian cricket, Odisha was often a footnote," Naveen Patnaik said, his voice echoing in the hall. "You have turned us into a headline."

"Well played, Rocky."

He then handed over a velvet-lined box containing a ₹5 Lakhs cheque.

The caras flashed like a thunderstorm.

Rocky looked at the amount, it was more than a year's salary for a governnt officer, but it was the CM's next words that stuck:

"Don't let the Mumbai lights blind you. Rember the soil of Barabati."

___

By the ti the SUV reached the narrow lanes of Cuttack, the sun was dipping low, painting the Mahanadi river in shades of bruised orange.

The neighborhood was decorated with marigold strings and banana leaves as if it were Diwali in July.

As the car pulled up to the gate, the crowd was so thick the driver had to kill the engine.

Rocky stepped out, and the "Common Man" took over.

The tea stall owner, Bisu, who had given Rocky free biscuits for years and when he was broke, ran up and hugged him, weeping openly.

"I told them! I told them this boy was a tiger!"

The Neighborhood aunties stood on balconies, showering him with flower petals and khai (puffed rice).

At the threshold stood Grandma Rita.

Her face was full of deep lines and wet with tears. She held a silver Aarti thali, the fla dancing in the evening breeze.

She didn't say "Congratulations."

She didn't ntion the IPL.

"Tu kete jhadi galuni," (You've beco so thin), she muttered, her voice cracking as she circled the fla around his face to ward off the 'evil eye.'

She pressed a thick, ssy tilak of vermillion on his forehead and shoved a piece of Arisa Pitha into his mouth before he could even say hello.

___

Inside, the living room felt smaller than he rembered, especially with half the neighborhood squeezed in.

Rocky opened his heavy kit bags, and it felt like he was unpacking a treasure chest.

"Sujit Sir, this is for you," Rocky said, handing over a heavy, professional-grade English Willow bat and a pair of carbon-fiber pads.

The old coach, usually a man of stone, ran his calloused fingers over the wood.

He didn't say thanks.

He just checked the grain and nodded, the highest form of praise.

For Grandma, there was a shimring Sambalpuri Silk Saree he had picked up in Mumbai, and for the local kids, a mountain of MI caps.

He stepped onto the balcony and tossed a handful of wristbands to the boys below.

The street turned into a frenzy of laughing, shoving kids, all dreaming of being the next Rocky.

___

The next morning, the "vacation" officially started.

Rocky drove to the Odisha Cricket Academy (OCA).

The mont his feet touched the grass of the practice nets, a hush fell over the ground.

Fifty young cricketers, boys who were where Rocky was just twelve months ago, stood frozen.

Their eyes weren't on his face.

They were on his feet, his posture, the way he carried his kit.

He was no longer just "Rocky."

He was the Standard.

Sujit Sir blew his whistle, the sharp sound cutting through the awe.

"What are you looking at? He has two legs and one bat, just like you! Back to the drills!"

But as Rocky walked toward the nets, he saw a group of common laborers working on the stadium stands.

They stopped their hamrs, wiped the sweat from their brows, and gave him a silent, respectful salute with their tools.

Rocky looked at his hands, the callouses from Amre Sir's training were still fresh.

His batting was still in progress, but as he looked at the kids watching him, he knew he couldn't stay at 37 for long.

The whole state was watching him now.
