The story dominated the news cycle, forcing newsrooms everywhere into an imdiate frenzy.

It exploded like a bomb.

By late evening, every sports channel in India had a "Breaking News" ticker that flashed so brightly it felt like a warning light. The leak had happened the way it always does—a forwarded WhatsApp image of the selection sheet, texted from inside the BCCI corridors to a few top reporters.

Fans who always thought that reporters must be bribing officials but that's not true. BCCI officials themselves do it for more transparency, controversy, bla shifting if anything goes wrong and of course, money is involved too. Anyway, back to topic.

Editors frantically scrambled to find all the edited footages they had of Rocky, while anchors sat under the hot studio lights, heatedly debating how a teenager with only a handful of professional gas had just hijacked a flight to South Africa.

The Breaking News: "The Rudra Shockwave"

Anchor (Tis Now/NDTV Sports):

"The squad for South Africa is out, and the headline isn't about who is there, but how he got there. Sources within the BCCI have inford us that MS Dhoni personally intervened to secure a Test spot for 18-year-old Rocky Rudra, reportedly at the expense of Ambati Rayudu. The question we're asking the nation tonight: Is this a Masterstroke or a Captain's Bias? Are we throwing a teenager to the wolves, or have we found our next superstar?"

___

The Expert Panel:

Harsha Bhogle: "It's the boldest selection call I've seen in a decade. Sourav, you've been a captain who backed youngsters. Is this too much, too soon?"

Sourav Ganguly: "Look, Harsha, I like the guts. You need a bit of 'madness' to win in South Africa. But Test cricket is a different beast. Rocky has been 'glazing' in T20s, but can he leave the ball for three overs straight? My worry is for Rayudu. What does a man have to do to get a break if a kid can jump the queue?"

Sunil Gavaskar: "I have to agree with Sourav today. The dostic structure is there for a reason. You don't bypass the Ranji Trophy just because you hit a few sixes in the CLT20. It sets a dangerous precedent. If he fails against Steyn, his confidence might never recover."

Ravi Shastri with voice booming offered a different opinion: "I disagree! When you see lightning, you don't wait for the storm to pass, you harness it! This kid has the 'X-factor.' He's got the hands, he's got the temperant, and if MS Dhoni is putting his reputation on the line for him, then there's sothing special there. Let the boy play first!"

___

In the quiet of his room in Cuttack, Rocky's phone buzzed.

He saw the Private Number and his heart hamred against his ribs.

He had a premonition.

"Hello?"

"Rocky? MS here. Captain bol raha hoon."

Rocky's breath hitched. "Ji, Mahi bhai. Namaste."

"Hmm.."

"Listen Rocky. You're on the plane to Jo'burg. The selectors had their share of doubts, but I told them I've seen enough to let you in. Enjoy the mont today, but tomorrow morning, I want you back at the nets. South Africa isn't Mumbai. The ball will aim for your throat. Be ready and Don't prove wrong."

"Mahi bhai.. Thank you... thank you for believing in ."

"Don't thank . Score runs. See you at the camp."

The line went dead. Rocky stood still for a mont, then slowly sank to his knees.

He bowed his head toward the small idol of Mahadev on his shelf, forehead hitting the floor.

"Thank you, Shambhu. Thank you."

He sprinted out and practically tackled his Grandma in a hug, lifting her off the floor.

"Dadi! I'm playing Tests! I'm going to South Africa!" She laughed, patting his head, her eyes moist with a silent blessing.

Minutes later, he was on the phone with Sujit Sir.

"Sir... the Test squad. Mahi bhai called. I'm in." On the other end, the veteran coach who had been teaching Rudra since his childhood, fell silent for five seconds, finally his voice thick with pride when he spoke up: "Pack your bags, Rocky. The world is about to see what Cuttack produces."

___

The Digital Storm.

@BluePaltan_99: "DHONI BACKING ROCKY OVER RAYUDU?! My captain knows ball! The era of Rudra starts now! 🇮🇳🔥"

@CricketLogic_India: "Feel for Rayudu man. Scored all those runs in dostic just to be replaced by a 18-year-old because of 'vibe.' Unfair."

@OdishaCricketFan: "HISTORY! First player from Odisha in the Test squad! Cuttack will not sleep tonight! Proud of you, Rocky! 🦀❤️"

@Lobby_Hater: "If Rocky was from Mumbai, Gavaskar would be calling him the next Bradman. Since he's from Cuttack, it's 'too soon.' Hypocrisy!"

@SteynGun_99: "Can't wait to see Dale Steyn welco this kid to international cricket. 150kph at the ribs. Let's see the '9-ball 43' temperant then."

@MahiRat_FC: "Dhoni doesn't back people easily. But If he's risking his reputation for Rudra, the kid is a generational talent. Period. 🤷"

@Statsman_T20: "454 runs in CLT20 is great, but zero Test experience. Buchi Babu doesn't count. This is either the greatest move in BCCI history or the most arrogant one."

@Cricket_OldSchool: "I rember a 16-year-old Sachin going to Pakistan. Everyone at that also said it was too soon. Look how that turned out. Let the boy breathe."

@Rayudu_Justice: "Justice for Rayudu. This 'Rocky Rule' is now affecting team selection too? Disgusting politics."

@Bold_Cricketer: "Rocky Rudra vs Dale Steyn is the only reason I'm watching this series. Absolute cinema. 🍿"

___

The international cricket community dissected the news. Instead of just reading the headlines, analysts, players, and fans around the world imdiately began breaking down every single detail.

Across the globe, from the comntary boxes of the Ashes to the studios in the Caribbean, the "Rudra Selection" beca the hottest topic in the sport.

The "Outsider" Perspective.

The Ashes Studio (UK/Australia):

Ian Smith (New Zealand Legend): "I've seen so bold calls in my ti, but this? This is like throwing a goldfish into a shark tank and expecting it to grow teeth. Rocky Rudra in Johannesburg? I've seen the tapes of his 28-ball hundred, and it's spectacular, but Dale Steyn at the Wanderers is not Jason Behrendorff in Delhi. It's a different sport entirely."

Shane Warne: "I disagree here, Smithy. I like it. I love it! The kid has that 'look' in his eyes. You know, he's got the swagger. When I saw him cup his ear to the trolls after that century, I thought, 'This kid would fit right into an Australian dressing room.' Dhoni isn't a fool. He's spotted a winner."

The Caribbean Feed:

Ian Bishop: "We are talking about a young man who has systematically dismantled every bowling attack put in front of him for six months. 1,145 runs in the Buchi Babu? That is a mountain of runs. Yes, it's a gamble, but the great ones, the Tendulkars, the Laras, they don't wait for permission. They just arrive."

___

On a popular cricket forum, a massive thread titled "Rocky in SA: Genius or Madness?" beca a warzone of statistics and sarcasm.

@ProteasFire_SA: "Honestly, let him co. We've seen these Indian 'wonderkids' before. They look like gods on the flat tracks of Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore, etc. Wait until Steyn and Morne Morkel starts targeting his throat from 10 feet up. He'll be begging for a software engineering job by the 20th over. #SteynGun #WelcoToSA"

@Rocky_Shield: (Replying to @ProteasFire_SA) "Flat tracks? Were you watching the sa CLT20 Semi-Final we were? That pitch was a minefield, spinning square, and he turned it into a playground. He also aced the IPL Final on a slow, low turner too, and that too against CSK. The boy doesn't need a highway. He just needs a bat and a target. Keep that sa energy when he pulls Steyn into the stands. 😉🔥"

@AussieSkeptic: "18 years old. No dostic red ball experience. Pure T20 hype. He's going to get exposed so hard his IPL price tag will drop faster than a Faulkner slower ball."

@Paltan_Logic: (Replying to @AussieSkeptic) "Typical Aussie salt. You're just mad he broke Gayle's record against your 'best' BBL bowlers. If he was Australian, you'd be calling for a national holiday. 'Exposed?' The kid has 1,145 red-ball runs in two weeks in Chennai heat. That's more 'grind' than your whole middle order has seen all year."

___

The Squad Debate: "Will he even play?"

In a massive Reddit-style "Ask Anything" (AMA) with a senior journalist:

User143: "With Kohli, Pujara, Rohit, and Rahane all fit, where does Rocky even fit? Is he just there to carry drinks and learn?"

Journalist_Insight: "That's the million-dollar question. Logic says he's the backup. But you don't take a 'form of his life' player like Rocky across the ocean just to hand out towels. Word is Dhoni wants him as a 'tactical nuke.' If a senior struggles in the first Test, or if the tracks are unusually dry, Rocky is the first na they'll look at. He isn't there to learn. He's there as a threat."

Jellybuter_08: "Imagine the scenes if he debuts at the Wanderers. The most hyped teenager in history vs the world's #1 fast bowler. It's more than just a match. It's a movie for cricket lovers."

As the debate raged on, Rocky was already back at the Cuttack nets.

The dia could talk about what not or shithousery for all they care, but he was busy making sure his feet moved faster than the talk.

He knew the world was waiting to see him fail. So were waiting to see him quit...then let them wait forever.

But, he also knew that Dale Steyn had never faced the "Rudra Tandava."

Play or not, he was going to make most of it in this tour.
