The thin altitude air of the Wanderers pressed down on the lungs, but the silence inside the stadium was what actually made it hard to breathe.
India had started the day at 205/9, a score that felt like an absolute death sentence under the gray overcast skies.
Now, however, the scoreboard was ticking over like a malfunctioning clock, completely defying the usual slow grind of a morning Test match session.
Up in the broadcasting box, Mark Nicholas leaned forward against the glass, his headset pressed tight to his ear as he watched the fielders scramble
Mark Nicholas: "I have honestly never seen anything quite like this. We are moving into the 93rd over of a Test match, and Rocky Rudra is playing a masterful ga of keep-away with the best bowling attack in the world. Ishant Sharma has been standing at the non-striker's end for nearly forty minutes now without facing a single delivery!"
Shaun Pollock: "It's a complete tactical nightmare for Grae Smith out there, Mark. Rudra is casually hitting boundaries on the first few balls of the over, then deliberately turning down easy singles on the fourth and fifth deliveries, only to scamper for a single on the final ball. He's hogging the strike like a man who doesn't just want to save his team from humiliation. He also wants to completely dominate the opposition."
At the crease, Rocky tapped the heavy toe of his bat against the popping crease. He didn't look up at the fielders closing in.
He just stared at the spot on the pitch where the red Kookaburra was about to land, his fingers tightening around the rubber grip of his handle
___
Over 95:
The Destruction of Vernon Philander
Pommie Mbangwa: "Vernon Philander is coming back into the attack. He has been the most economical bowler by far for South Africa in this match, but Rocky Rudra is treating him like a casual net bowler out there this morning."
Ball 94.1 (135 km/h):
Philander landed the ball on his favorite spot, trying to exploit that agonizing corridor of uncertainty a fraction outside the off-stump line. But Rocky was ready.
Relying on a short-arm jab that looked reminiscent of a young Ricky Ponting, he fetched the ball from well outside off and pulled it across the line, cracking it through mid-wicket for a boundary.
FOUR RUNS.
Mark Nicholas: "Goodness ! That is a pure T20 shot in the morning session of Day 2! He is completely playing with the field placents now."
Ball 94.3 (136 km/h):
Seeking to change his length, Philander offered a rare, overpitched half-volley. Rocky didn't hesitate. He danced lightly down the track, an audacious move that made the traditionalists in the comntary box gasp, and lofted the ball straight over the bowler's head, clearing the sight screen with ease for a massive six.
SIX RUNS.
Shaun Pollock: "He is actively toying with them now, Mark! Just look at Grae Smith's face in the slips. He has placed five n right on the boundary rope, and Rudra is still clearing them without breaking a sweat. This isn't standard batting anymore. This is a devastating statent of intent."
Ball 94.6 (134 km/h):
On the final delivery of the over, Philander bowled a defensive, tight length. Rocky simply presented a dead face, offering a gentle push down to long-on. He sprinted the single hard, sliding his bat safely past the crease as the fielder's desperate throw ca in wide. At the other end, Ishant Sharma hadn't even had to untuck his bat from his armpit.
He just jogged across, safely preserved by his young partner.
1 run.
___
For the next ten overs, the historic Wanderers Stadium witnessed an absolute spectacle.
Rocky was on a complete, unyielding rampage. He moved effortlessly from 140 to 160 with a dizzying array of cheeky ramp shots, fierce square cuts, and those signature, rolling Ponting pulls that routinely crossed the ropes.
The premier South African pacers were steaming.
Dale Steyn was visibly cursing under his breath after a 151 km/h bouncer was skillfully guided over the heads of the slip cordon for another boundary.
Pommie Mbangwa (on the air): "Just look at the frustration etched onto Steyn's face right now. He is throwing everything into the turf at 152 clicks, and this eighteen-year-old is just looking right back down the pitch at him with a calm smile. It has beco absolute psychological warfare out there. To pull off these shots in the IPL is one thing, the tracks back ho are flat, and the boundaries are small. But to do this at the Wanderers? Against a world-class pace battery in their own backyard? We are undeniably watching the birth of a global superstar."
Mark Nicholas: "A star has been born today, Pommie. Many critics across India and the world wondered if the BCCI's controversial 'Rocky Rule' and Rocky himself, was just a product of corporate hype. Today, that entire debate has been buried deep under a mountain of runs. He has single-handedly dragged India from the terrifying brink of a 150-all-out disaster to a highly respectable team total of 276 with one wicket remaining."
___
Rocky had advanced rapidly to 179*.
He had single-handedly plundered 62 runs on the second morning in less than an hour of pure, unadulterated carnage.
At the other end, Ishant Sharma remained stranded on 1*, a spectator who had still not faced a single delivery in the new session due to Rocky's selfless monopoly of the strike.
Ball 102.4 (151 km/h):
Morne Morkel, desperate and visibly exhausted, gathered his remaining energy and dug one in short and wide of the off-stump. It was a classic piece of bait.
Rocky's eyes lighting up at the width and the prospect of another flashing boundary, instinctively went for his trademark, aggressive square-cut.
But the steep, awkward bounce of the Wanderers pitch, which he had masterfully combated all morning, finally caught up to him. He didn't quite get on top of the ball. The leather took a thick, flying top edge, skyrocketing high into the Johannesburg air.
The entire stadium held its breath.
AB de Villiers sprinted backward from the slip cordon, his eyes glued to the red speck against the blue backdrop.
Tracking it to the edge of the ring, he launched himself into a full-stretched, horizontal dive, plucking the ball cleanly out of the air just inches before it could hit the turf.
Mark Nicholas: "HE'S FINALLY OUT! The magnificent morning carnage has finally co to an end! But stand up, Johannesburg! Stand up, world! Rocky Rudra is walking off the turf for a monuntal 179! He has single-handedly dragged India from a disastrous 62 for no loss collapse into an all-out total of 286. He has scored 179 of those 286 runs. That ans he has scored nearly sixty-three percent of his team's entire total on Test debut!"
Shaun Pollock: "Just look at Ishant Sharma's expression, Mark. He's walking over to his partner, almost in total disbelief. He literally didn't have to face a single ball this morning! He quite literally just enjoyed the absolute best seat in the house for what is undeniably the greatest debut innings in the history of Test match cricket."
___
On the field.
Rocky stopped at the edge of the square, the roaring adrenaline slowly leaving his system. He looked down at the face of his scarred willow, then glanced up at the sun, and finally turned to look back at the South African team.
Grae Smith marched straight up to him from the slips and shook his hand firmly, a powerful, quiet gesture of pure respect between two battle-hardened competitors.
Even Dale Steyn, still heavily panting at the end of his spell, gave the teenager a respectful nod of acknowledgnt.
The hostility of the yesterday afternoon had completely dissolved into professional reverence.
As Rocky reached the boundary rope, the entire Indian dugout was already crowded against the rails.
MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and the rest of the squad were standing tall. Even the famously stoic, unmoving head coach Duncan Fletcher was on his feet, clapping vigorously.
Besides celebrating an insane milestone inning from a debutant, they were also actively gasping and laughing in sheer disbelief at the absurdity of what they had just witnessed.
Pommie Mbangwa: "One hundred and seventy-nine runs. Eighteen years old. In South Africa's own backyard against an apex bowling attack. This performance fundantally rewrites what we expect from teenage prodigies. The entire landscape of international cricket tilts on its axis after this morning."
"It's a legend in the making. The world of cricket will never be the sa after this morning."
First Innings Scorecard
India: 286 All Out (102.4 Overs)
Rocky Rudra: 179 (212b, 18x4, 5x6)
Ishant Sharma: 1* (11b)
Mark Nicholas: "And the Cuttack Cyclone has left a permanent scar on the Bullring. An innings of supre bravery cos to an end, but the real story is just beginning. India has a score to bowl at, and South Africa knows they are in a real dogfight."
Rocky walked slowly into the players' tunnel, the thunderous ovation fading into the concrete walls, leaving behind a caked trail of Johannesburg clay and an unshakeable legacy.
____
The innings of 179 did more than just moving the scoreboard, it shifted the tectonic plates of the sport.
As Rocky Rudra walked off the Wanderers turf, his jersey caked in red dust and heavy morning sweat, the cricketing world was struggling to find adjectives that didn't feel entirely too small for the mont.
The Star Sports Studio: The Heat Map of Genius
Host (Jatin Sapru): "It is six minutes past one in the afternoon back ho in India, and the entire nation has practically stopped breathing. One hundred and seventy-nine runs out of a team total of 286. That is an astonishing 62.5% of the team's total runs. Sourav, we are collectively witnessing the single most dominant debut in the history of the ga."
Sourav Ganguly's voice was uncharacteristically thick with emotion as he leaned forward.
Sourav Ganguly: "Jatin, look at the live footage of the dugout. MS Dhoni is usually a complete statue on the balcony, but even he is standing up, clapping, and whistling. To flawlessly farm the strike for ten consecutive overs against a peak Steyn, Philander and Morkel, to literally not let Ishant Sharma face a single ball this morning... that is a level of tactical arrogance I've only ever seen in pri Brian Lara or Sir Viv Richards. He didn't simply bat out there today. He literally bullied a world-class bowling attack like they're a piece of paper."
Sunil Gavaskar: "It is the highest individual score by an Indian on South African soil, and Rocky Rudra has done it on his very first appearance. In fact, it is the highest score by any visiting debutant in the entire history of cricket in South Africa. He has broken a century-old ceiling today. But more than the re records, look at the scoring rate. He was operating at a strike rate of 84 in a morning session where the red ball was doing absolutely everything. It is a flawless masterpiece."
Sunny G who was supposed to be comnting in SA, returned back to India because of so family ergency, so he joined the panel here to discuss and provide insights about the ongoing series.
[ Stats of Top Individual Scores by Indian Batsn on South African Soil:

@VirenderSehwag (verified): "Rocky beta, what did you eat for breakfast this morning? 179 in Jo'burg! Ishant Sharma deserves a special dal just for standing peacefully at the other end and watching the fireworks. This isn't a debut. It's a hostile takeover! 🇮🇳🔥 #IndvsSA"
@KP24 (verified): "I've seen so special innings played at the Bullring, but an 18-year-old doing THAT to Steyn and Morkel on Day 2? Absolute insanity. The downswing and bat speed are frightening. India has uncovered a diamond. 💎 🏏"
@MahiRat_FanClub: "Dhoni 🤝 Rocky. The Captain saw the future in the boardroom, and the future just scored 179 at the Wanderers. To everyone who questioned the greatest captain and Rudra... kindly find the nearest exit. Silence is golden. 🤫🦁"
@CricketAussie_99: "I'm watching this broadcast from Sydney and I literally can't sleep. He plays the pull shot better than any Australian batsman in the last decade. I think It's official: the Punter DNA has been successfully cloned in India. Terrifying tis ahead for the rest of the world. 🇦🇺😭"
@MichaelVaughan (verified): "179 on debut at the Wanderers. I'll say it right now without hesitation... He's the most exciting young talent to enter the international arena since the turn of the century. Pure, unadulterated box office."

u/TheProteaWay [ 1.5k]: "I'm a South African, and I am literally standing up in my living room clapping right now. I have never seen our bowling attack look this completely clueless in our own backyard. Morne Morkel was literally steamrolling 150 clicks at his head and the kid was casually ramping it over the keeper's head for six. Infinite respect. 🇿🇦🙏"
u/CricStats_Nerd [ 2.1k]: "Massive stat check: Rocky Rudra just scored the highest percentage of team runs in a completed Test innings by an Indian debutant. The highest individual score by an Indian batsman in South Africa before this morning was the great Sachin Tendulkar with his 169 back in '97. Rocky just blew past him to claim the top spot. He also just beca the youngest player to score 150 overseas. We are literally watching history unfold in real ti, guys."
u/London_Calling_99 [ 1.1k]: "The strike manipulation on that second morning was easily the best part of the whole masterclass. Ishant Sharma literally didn't have to face a single ball for forty-five straight minutes! Rocky Rudra was basically playing a 1v11 match against peak South Africa and winning. Absolute Chad move. 😎"
u/India_Cricket_Loyalist [ 843]: "I honestly thought Virat Kohli was the chosen one. Then I thought Ajinkya Rahane was the one to watch. Now I am starting to realize that Rocky Rudra is the Whole Thing. That 10.5 Crore IPL Experts' mock auction price tag suddenly looks like a discount bargain now. Hope he gets more than this in the real upcoming Auction."
u/Sarcastic_Aussie [ 612]: "Can soone please double-check his birth certificate? There is absolutely no way an eighteen-year-old from India possesses the ntal composure to farm the strike against a fuming Dale Steyn like that. This is a 35-year-old tactical veteran trapped inside a teenager's body."
u/Odisha_Pride [ 3.4k]: "The whole city of Cuttack is out on the streets right now! Firecrackers are going off everywhere like it's Diwali! Our boy just stood up at the Bullring and firmly told the entire world exactly where Odisha is on the cricket map! 🦀❤️🇮🇳"
u/Rudra_Is_My_God [ 415]: "I can literally feel Virat's fanboys crying about 'unfair conditions' and 'tired bowlers' in the other subreddits right now. Keep coping, guys. 🤡😂

Shane Warne (on the World Feed):
"You see that walk-off? That right there is what genuine respect looks like in international cricket. Grae Smith marching up to shake his hand, Steyn giving him a quiet nod. Those n know they've just been a direct part of a massive 'Where were you?' historical mont. Rocky didn't just score a casual 179 out there. He completely revolutionized the way people think about opening the batting in South Africa. He's made a green Wanderers pitch look like a flat T20 Powerplay."
Ian Bishop:
"I am getting goosebumps just looking at the slow-motion studio replays. That cheeky periscope ramp off a 150-click Morkel... the majestic inside-out lofted drive off Philander... it was nothing short of a beautiful symphony of destruction. India was struggling at 150 for 8, people! They were staring a total first-innings collapse dead in the face. He single-handedly dragged them to a highly competitive 286. This is the exact stuff of cricketing folklore."

Indian Dressing Room
Inside the Indian dressing room, the air was thick with the sharp, dicinal scent of wintergreen oil and lingering adrenaline.
Rocky sat quietly in his corner locker, his heavy pads finally unstrapped and tossed aside. His legs were visibly trembling from the sheer physical toll of his grueling almost 3-hour batting marathon.
Sachin Tendulkar, who had been intently watching every single ball of the innings from his ho back in India, sent a simple text ssage to the team manager to be relayed directly to the teenager.
The manager walked over and handed Rocky the phone.
The ssage was...
"Well done, beta! More than your personal runs, to ... it's the way you batted for the pride of the entire jersey today, Rocky. Welco to the 22-yard family."
Rocky stared at the screen for a long mont, then looked down at his bat leaning against his kit bag, its face heavily scarred, compressed, and bruised from the fierce Johannesburg battle.
He was physically exhausted, but looking at the team sheet, he wasn't satisfied yet. The job was only half done.

@sachin_rt (Sachin Tendulkar) (verified):
"Special, very special. To see an 18-year-old show that specific kind of 'Khadoos' grit at the Wanderers is incredibly heartening. The way you masterfully managed the strike showed a very mature head on young shoulders. Enjoy the mont, Rocky. The journey has just begun! 🇮🇳🏏 #IndvsSA #RockyRudra"
@BrianLara (Brian Lara) (verified):
"I've seen so dominant individual performances at the Bullring over the years, but that was sothing else entirely. To outplay a world-class bowling attack on Test debut with such flair and tactical brilliance... it genuinely reminded of the pure joy of batting. Spectacular innings, young man! The world is officially your stage. 👏🔥 #Rocky179 #Cricket"

r/Cricket - "The Global Envy"
The global community was fracturing along lines of awe and deep sports frustration, with traditional powerhouse nations watching the broadcast in absolute disbelief.
u/WACA_Warrior [ 1.8k]: "Watching this from Perth. I'm actually kinda annoyed. How on earth does India keep finding these guys? We're out here struggling to find one single, decent opener who can survive a green top, and India just casually drops a kid into the Wanderers who bats like a terrifying hybrid of Ricky Ponting and Virender Sehwag. It's simply not fair. 🇦🇺😫"
u/Lords_LongRoom [ 942]: "The strike-farming on that second morning was the ultimate display of disrespect. He treated a Test match against a peak Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander like he was playing a casual ga against his younger brothers in the backyard. Utterly brutal. 🇬🇧🏏"
On the other side, the toxic fan wars heating Up
As Rocky's na dominated the headlines, the virtual tribalism of Indian cricket fandom reached a boiling point.
@Virat_Gang_18: "Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar tweeting for him already? The PR machine behind this kid is insane. Let him do it in a grueling fourth innings when the target is chasing and the pressure is REALLY on. One lucky morning innings doesn't make you a legend. Kohli is still the only King. 👑🚫"
@Rudra_Tandava_FC: (Replying to @Virat_Gang_18) "PR? Are you blind? The boy just scored 179 on debut at the Wanderers! Your father 'King' hasn't even scored a 150 in South Africa in his entire career. Keep crying your eyes out while the actual legends of the ga recognize real talent. It seems Rocky didn't rely break historical records today, he also broke your fragile ego! 🤫🔥"

"The images coming in from Cuttack right now are simply unbelievable. We are seeing thousands of people completely blocking the streets, gathered outside Rocky Rudra's childhood ho...
His childhood coach, Sujit Sir, is currently being carried on people's shoulders through the crowd, flooded with garlands. This has instantly transcended a sporting achievent. It's like a national festival there. One hundred and seventy-nine runs that have single-handedly united a country still deeply mourning Sachin Tendulkar's retirent. Long live the new God!"

(A/N: I broke my rule of posting 4 chapters a week because so readers aren't satisfied lol. I'm writing this novel entirely for free... But you guys aren't happy with the way I'm writing chapters. Unlike other cricket novels, I'm trying my best to create the realistic feelings. If you're looking for robotic and bland with fast paced like ending everything within 1 chapter, then this novel isn't for you. Feel free to leave. Because I'm posting it as a hobby of mine..to so extent , this book contains many cricket fans' fantasies too.)
