The stage was set, the lines were drawn, and the air in Bengaluru was thick enough to chew on.

As the Mumbai Indians took their positions, the stadium was a vibrating wall of red.

The match was barely ten minutes old.

Mitchell Johnson had stead in for the first over, a fiery opening that saw Chris Gayle cautiously defending.

But as the second over began from the Pavilion End, the veteran Munaf Patel looked visibly uncomfortable.

After his fourth delivery, a slower ball that Dilshan tucked away for a single and Munaf clutched his groin, his face contorting.

Ricky Ponting was on him in an instant.

A quick conversation, a wave to the dugout, and the signal was made.

"Rudra! You're on!" John Wright's voice cut through the dugout's tension.

Rudra didn't hesitate.

He shed his bib in one fluid motion, revealing the pristine blue-and-gold jersey.

He checked kala dhaga (black thread) on his wrist, ensuring it was snug.

He wasn't just stepping onto a cricket field.

He was stepping into his destiny.

As he crossed the rope, the Chinnaswamy crowd barely noticed the 18-year-old.

He was just a sub.

But as he reached the huddle, Ponting pointed toward Backward Point.

"Munaf's going for a rub. You're at Point, kid. Gayle is looking to go hard through the off-side. Stay low. Watch the hands."

"I've got it, Cap," Rudra said, his voice calm in the storm of noise.

Over 3: Mitchell Johnson vs. Chris Gayle

Ball 3.1: Johnson stead in, the ball whistling through the air at 146 km/h.

It was short, aid at the ribs.

Gayle, with the grace of a giant, simply swiveled and pulled it to fine leg for a single.

The crowd erupted.

Ball 3.2: Dilshan took a quick single to mid-off, bringing the 'Universe Boss' back on strike.

Ball 3.3: The tension in the stadium spiked. Johnson looked frustrated. He went for the "kill" ball, a wide, fast delivery ant to entice a slash.

Gayle didn't need a second invitation.

He planted his front foot and unleashed a murderous square cut.

The sound of the ball hitting the bat was like a whip cracking.

It was a flat, white bullet, destined for the boundary boards.

"That's four! Gayle has found the gap!"

Danny Morrison's voice scread over the broadcast.

But Rudra had already moved.

Before Gayle's bat had even finished its arc, Rudra's insane reflexes had picked up the angle of the bat face.

He didn't just run.

He intercepted.

He took two explosive steps to his right and launched himself.

To the fans, it looked like a blue streak.

Rudra's body was fully horizontal, inches off the grass.

The ball hit his palms with a sickening thud that could be heard by the wicketkeeper.

He didn't fumble.

He didn't let it pop.

He smothered the montum, rolled over his shoulder, and was back on his feet before Gayle had even completed his follow-through.

The stadium went from a roar to a stunned, collective gasp.

Ball 3.4: Instead of a boundary, it was a dot ball. Rudra cocked his arm and fired a return to Dinesh Karthik.

It wasn't a standard throw.

It was a 90 mph rocket that stayed six inches above the turf the entire way, slamming into the keeper's gloves.

"Goodness ! Who is this youngster?!"

Harsha Bhogle's voice was filled with genuine wonder.

"I haven't seen a ball stopped like that at Point since the days of Jonty Rhodes. And that throw... look at the pace on that return!"

Ball 3.5: Johnson, energized by the save, bowled a perfect yorker. Gayle squeezed it out toward Point again.

This ti, it was a softer push.

Rudra attacked the ball.

He didn't wait for it to co to him.

He charged, picked it up cleanly with one hand while in full stride, and feigned a throw at the striker's end.

Gayle, who had taken two steps out for a single, scrambled back, his massive fra nearly slipping as he dove for safety.

Ball 3.6: The final ball of the over. Gayle looked visibly annoyed.

He tried to muscle a length ball through the sa region.

Rudra, positioned perfectly, moved two inches to his left and took the ball on the bounce, staring directly at Gayle as he collected it.

___

As the over ended and the fielders began to rotate, the caras stayed on Rudra.

"Danny, we usually talk about the bowlers putting pressure on the batsn, but this young man, Rocky Rudra, is it? He's just put a psychological cage around Chris Gayle," Harsha noted.

"He's taken away Gayle's favorite scoring zone in just three balls."

Up in the VIP box, the celebrity guests and team owners were leaning forward.

They ca to see Gayle hit sixes, but they were staying to watch the kid in the blue jersey who moved like a panther.

Virat Kohli, leaning against the padded railing of the RCB dugout, narrowed his eyes.

He watched Rudra adjust his sleeve, his gaze never leaving the pitch.

Kohli didn't say a word, but he rembered the face.

___

[RCB Innings: 4.2 Overs | Score: 24/1]

The early shock of Rudra's fielding hadn't worn off.

The crowd was still buzzing, and the comntators were poring over the replay of his horizontal dive.

"Look at the fra-by-fra, Harsha," Danny Morrison chirped, his finger tracing Rudra's path on the touch-screen.

"He's not even looking at the ball when he starts his move. He's looking at Gayle's front foot. The mont that foot plants, he's gone! That's not just athleticism. That's a kid who has studied the ga."

On the field, Jasprit Bumrah was at the top of his mark for his second over.

The young slinger looked tense, his unusual action still a mystery to the world.

At the non-striker's end, Virat Kohli had just walked in after a quick wicket fell.

Bumrah ran in, his arms whipping through that awkward, high-release point.

He delivered a searing in-swinger to Gayle.

The big man squeezed it out toward the gap between Point and Cover, a classic "soft hands" single.

"Yes!" Kohli scread, charging down the pitch.

He was arguably the fastest runner between the wickets in the league, and this was an easy run.

But he had underestimated the kid at Point.

Rudra didn't wait for the ball to slow down.

He attacked it like a sprinter coming out of the blocks.

In three explosive strides, he was over the ball.

While still in a low crouch, he scooped the ball with his bare right hand.

Kohli, halfway down the pitch, saw the blur of blue and white.

His eyes widened. He realized he was in trouble.

"NO! GO BACK! Benstokes!"

Kohli roared, pivoting on a di and diving back toward the non-striker's end.
