"You… you… you're spewing nonsense. How could I possibly use such despicable ans?"
Sherman Sumrs panicked.
Even his voice began to stutter.
Dirk Carter sneered and said, "Have you not used enough despicable ans already? You were surprised by Dylan Tate's death, so you had soone delete the chat records to make sure no one knew you were the last person he contacted, right?"
His secret was exposed.
Sherman Sumrs appeared even more nervous.
He was unable to refute.
After stamring for a long ti, he said, "In any case, I wasn't the one who caused Dylan Tate's death. He committed suicide because he felt guilty."
Dirk Carter nodded.
He said, "Alright, I understand. I'm a man of my word. Since you've told the truth, I won't make things difficult for you. I won't expose that video, but let make it clear: If people don't cross , I won't cross them, but if they do, I'll repay them tenfold."
After saying that,
he took a long sigh, stood up, and left the conference room.
As soon as he opened Donal Lewis's office door,
Donal Lewis, who had been pacing around, hurried over and asked, "How did it go? Did you find out anything?"
Dirk Carter nodded.
Then he relayed exactly what Sherman Sumrs had said about the 419 mining accident.
Donal Lewis was quite surprised upon hearing it.
After a long silence, he said, "So, Dylan Tate really committed suicide out of guilt?"
"Yes, he did commit suicide out of guilt, but there are still doubts. My uncle was never a money-grubber. If he were, he wouldn't have divorced his wife back then. But why was he so protective of Oakhaven Mine? It doesn't make sense."
Dirk Carter said.
Donal Lewis furrowed his brow and asked, "Are you saying Dylan Tate's suicide wasn't just to cover up the mining accident but also to prevent further investigation into it?"
Dirk Carter nodded.
He said, "Covering up a mining accident is not a cri punishable by death. At most, it's a prison term. Even ten or eight years in prison is better than death. My uncle was never a pessimist. He wouldn't choose suicide willingly. I believe there's more behind this than we know."
Donal Lewis patted Dirk Carter on the shoulder.
He said, "Alright, since we've learned the truth, let's not dwell on it. Perhaps Dylan Tate cared about his reputation. By the way, are you really going to let Sherman Sumrs off the hook?"
Dirk Carter chuckled coldly and said, "I've let him off, but I'm sure he won't let off, so I need to be ready for his retaliation."
"Would he be that foolish?"
"He's a very dark-minded person. He imagines others would do what he would do. So, his retaliation is inevitable."
Dirk Carter said.
The truth about Dylan Tate's death.
Left Dirk Carter frustrated the entire afternoon.
He always thought Dylan Tate was innocent.
But when the truth lood large, Dylan Tate was still mired in scandal.
Although he was still unwilling to give up,
for now, there was nothing more to be done.
After work,
just as Dirk Carter reached the building of his apartnt complex,
he saw four or five police cars parked at the entrance, all with lights flashing.
He thought sothing must have happened, just as he saw several female officers escorting Elaine Nolan from the hallway.
"Which departnt are you with?"
Dirk Carter imdiately went over and blocked their path to ask.
From a corner, a middle-aged man in police uniform stepped out and said, "Hello, Secretary General Carter."
"Claudius, what brings you here?"
This policeman was Claudius Zane, the Deputy County Commissioner and Police Chief of Stillwater County.
Claudius Zane smiled and said, "The county bureau received a report. Elaine Nolan is accused of using illegal ans to invade others' privacy. She is now under arrest by the police."
Invasion of privacy?
Such a minor charge and they deployed five police cars, Dirk Carter found it amusing.
It was clearly Sherman's revenge.
Yet they made it sound so just.
"Chief Zane, Elaine's actions were under my orders."
Dirk Carter said.
Claudius Zane was taken aback for a mont, and then a look of delight crossed his face.
He said, "Secretary General Carter, you can't be joking. You'll have to be responsible for your words."
"I'm responsible!"
Dirk Carter said.
Claudius Zane nodded and said, "Alright, since Secretary General Carter has confessed, please co with us as well."
After saying that,
he waved his hand.
Two officers ca over and grabbed Dirk Carter by the shoulders.
Dirk Carter and Elaine Nolan exchanged a glance, neither spoke a word.
Fifteen minutes later.
The two were separately led into interrogation rooms at the police station.
Dirk Carter was handcuffed once again, secured to the interrogation chair.
However, no one ca to take his statent.
After half an hour passed,
the door to the interrogation room was pushed open.
A young man in a casual jacket walked in.
It was Franco Sumrs.
As soon as Franco Sumrs entered, the red light on the cara in front of him switched off.
That ant surveillance had been turned off.
He leaned on the table, sized up Dirk Carter, sneered, and said, "I was wondering how to get you in here, but you ca of your own volition. Quite loyal, aren't you? Alright, since you're here, it saves the trouble. Where's the original of the video?"
Dirk Carter chuckled.
He said, "I already said I wouldn't hold your father and you responsible. I didn't expect you two to be so restless, using state machinery to arrest , abusing power so proficiently."
Franco Sumrs paused and said, "Dirk, people say you're good with words. I didn't believe it until today. You're indeed quite capable. But what good are words? You've already been caught. You can't fly out of here. I'm telling you straight: if you don't hand over the original today, you won't be leaving this police station."
"Really? I don't believe it!"
Dirk Carter said nonchalantly.
Seeing his indifferent attitude,
Franco Sumrs beca angry.
He walked directly up to Dirk Carter, grabbed his collar, and shouted, "Dirk Carter, do you think I don't dare to beat you up? I'm telling you, even if I kill you here today, I have the guts."
"Then you can try."
Dirk Carter said.
"Oh, still being tough? Alright, I'll show you that I'm not bluffing."
After saying this,
Franco Sumrs walked to the door of the interrogation room.
He opened the door.
His two bodyguards walked in.
Franco Sumrs pointed at Dirk Carter and said, "Since he refuses to speak, let's help him. Rember, whatever happens, I'll take full responsibility."
"Alright."
The two bodyguards cracked their knuckles and walked towards Dirk Carter…
It was night.
But the county police station's lobby was brightly lit.
At that mont,
a black sedan drove in through the gate.
The car drove all the way up to the steps of the building.
As the car door opened,
County Committee Secretary Donal Lewis and the newly appointed County Committee Office Director Rash Scott quickly got out of the car.
They swiftly ascended the steps.
Just as they entered the lobby,
a side door opened.
Claudius Zane led a group of police leaders to greet them.
"Secretary Lewis, what brings you here? Co, everyone, stand at attention and applaud…"
At Claudius Zane's command,
five or six officers lined up, seemingly clapping, but in reality blocking his way.
"Claudius Zane, what do you an by this?"
Donal Lewis asked.
Claudius Zane chuckled and said, "Secretary Lewis, what are you saying? You've suddenly graced the police station with your presence. I'm here to welco you on behalf of the station. Have you eaten yet, Secretary Lewis? If not, shall I accompany you for dinner?"
"Step aside!"
Donal Lewis scolded with a scowl.
