"You won't kill , because my death brings you no benefit."

Dirk Carter said calmly.

Rand Quance asked, "Why? It's because of you that I've co this far; I have a million reasons to kill you."

Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "I'm afraid there are more people who want you dead in Kenton County now than who want dead, aren't there? You're only valuable to . To anyone else, you wouldn't have any chance to speak, and you know this better than I do."

He hit the nail on the head.

Rand Quance was at a loss for words.

For that mastermind behind it all,

Rand Quance was now a ticking ti bomb.

Only death truly silences, and since Yorke Payne is dead, naturally, Rand Quance must die too.

Seeing Rand Quance speechless,

Dirk Carter said, "Who's behind you and Yorke Payne? Tell , and I'll get you out."

"Why would I trust you?"

Rand Quance asked.

Dirk Carter shrugged and said, "You don't have to trust . But besides , who else can you trust? Isn't that why you made this call to ?"

"Fine, I'll tell you, but you must arrange my escape from the city first. Once I'm out, I'll give you the answers you want."

Rand Quance said.

Dirk Carter waved a finger and said, "No, you must tell first, then I'll consider how to get you out of the city."

"Dirk Carter, don't play gas with ! I'm out of options now, killing you wouldn't be a loss for ."

Rand Quance erupted in anger.

He walked quickly.

Directly in front of Dirk Carter.

He pulled out a knife and pressed it against Dirk Carter's neck.

Their eyes locked.

Full of murderous intent.

Upon seeing Rand Quance's face clearly, it was apparent that he was filthy all over, even his hair was a tangled ss. It seed his day on the run had been miserable.

"If you kill , the outco will be the sa."

Dirk Carter said calmly.

Rand Quance gritted his teeth.

His hands trembled.

It seed he was undecided.

Dirk Carter was aware that Rand Quance would eventually relent.

At that mont, Rand Quance suddenly looked behind Dirk Carter, his eyes filled with terror.

"Watch out..."

The words had barely left his mouth.

A thud was heard.

Dirk Carter felt a heavy blow to his head, a wave of suffocation and dizziness overtook him, his body went limp, and he collapsed to the ground.

In a haze, he saw a figure step over him, moving toward the retreating Rand Quance...

He knew nothing of what happened next.

When he reopened his eyes,

he was staring at a brightly lit ceiling.

A strong dicinal sll filled his nostrils.

No guessing needed; he was in a hospital.

He wanted to struggle to sit up, only to find that his left hand was cuffed, shackled to the side of the bed.

"You're awake?"

In front of him was a masked female doctor.

Her face was obscured, but her eyes were large, lively, blinking with intelligence.

"Doc... Doctor... where am I?"

Dirk Carter asked weakly.

"Where else would you be? Certainly in a hospital, don't move around, you've got a serious concussion, you need plenty of rest."

After speaking,

the doctor glanced at the nearby instrunts and told the nurse, "Vitals are stable, but still keep a close eye on him."

As she finished speaking.

The door to the ward banged open.

Two n in police uniforms walked in.

One of them looked to be in his forties.

He showed Dirk Carter a badge and said, "Comrade Dirk Carter, I am Vincent Eas, Deputy Director of the County Public Security Bureau and Chief of the Criminal Investigation Division, I'm here to question you in accordance with the law, please..."

Before Vincent Eas could finish,

the nearby female doctor interrupted, "Are you done? The patient has just woken up and hasn't fully recovered, please leave imdiately!"

"We're working here!"

Vincent Eas said, sowhat displeased.

The female doctor replied coldly, "You're working, and so am I. I don't care who you are or who he is; until I approve your entry, you must leave!"

Vincent Eas seed about to retort.

The other policeman tugged at him.

Signaling with his eyes that they should leave.

Vincent Eas had no choice.

Reluctantly, he left.

Dirk Carter was baffled.

He rembered what happened before he passed out last night, but how did sleeping just one night result in him being handcuffed to the bed?

"Doc... Doctor? Who brought here?"

Dirk Carter asked.

The doctor, adjusting the instrunts, said, "I don't know. You shouldn't talk. Your primary focus now is to rest."

"Then... then why am I handcuffed?"

Dirk Carter asked again.

The doctor said, "I told you I don't know, and even if I did, I couldn't say. This is Kenton County Hospital, I'm Rosalind Sullivan, your neurologist."

After those words,

Rosalind Sullivan walked out.

As the door opened, Dirk Carter saw several police officers outside the room, all engaged in conversation about sothing.

Could it be that sothing happened to Rand Quance?

During this period,

Dirk Carter didn't know how long he'd been lying there.

From day to night.

In the interim, only the nurse and Rosalind Sullivan had visited a few tis.

Besides them,

no one else entered.

The next morning,

Rosalind Sullivan, masked, ca in and examined Dirk Carter before asking, "How are you feeling today?"

Dirk Carter said, "Much better, not so dizzy anymore."

Rosalind Sullivan nodded.

She opened the door and said to those outside, "The patient has just recovered, but we're not certain yet, he still needs monitoring, you have fifteen minutes, then you must leave."

"Understood, doctor."

Soone answered from the doorway.

After Rosalind Sullivan left, the two policen from yesterday entered again.

One took notes.

The other, Vincent Eas, still wore a serious expression as he asked unkindly, "Comrade Dirk Carter, I'm going to ask you a few questions, please answer truthfully."

"Go ahead."

Dirk Carter responded.

Vincent Eas paused and asked, "Why did you et Rand Quance in private?"

"He said he wanted to make a deal with ."

"What deal?"

Vincent Eas asked.

Dirk Carter thought for a mont, then said, "He claid to have evidence of Yorke Payne's cris and wanted to trade it for my help getting out of the city."

Dirk Carter said this

because he didn't want anyone to know he was still investigating Yorke Payne's real boss.

If they knew, the other side would certainly preemptively act.

Vincent Eas frowned and asked, "Why didn't you report it? Rand Quance is a fugitive, weren't you aware you should report it imdiately?"

"Because he said if I reported it, he wouldn't show."

Dirk Carter said.

"Why did you two end up fighting?"

Vincent Eas asked.

Dirk Carter was surprised.

He asked, "What fight? We didn't fight. There was soone else at the scene who knocked down."

"Comrade Dirk Carter, don't try that on . I've been in the criminal investigation field for nearly twenty years, I've seen it all; when we responded to the call, there were only two of you. Trying to bluff your way out, is it going to work?"

At this point, Vincent Eas' tone turned harsher.

Dirk Carter asked, "What happened to Rand Quance?"

"Don't you know what happened to him?"

The other officer taking notes asked.

Dirk Carter shook his head and said, "I don't know, I was unconscious before him."

"He's dead, killed with one stab."

Vincent Eas said.
