What does this an?
Implied? Provoking?
Though not entirely sure, Dirk Carter remained calm.
He said, "Hello, Deputy Secretary Cong."
"Disciplinary Committee mber, Caradoc Hall."
Mason Sutton pointed to the next man and said.
Dirk Carter went around and got to know each mber of the leadership team.
The town isn't large, but the leadership team has eleven mbers.
Among the eleven, eight n and three won.
It's no different from a typical town setup.
After everyone was introduced, Mason Sutton presided over the eting and, on behalf of the County Committee's Organization Departnt, announced Dirk Carter's appointnt.
Then, after Dirk Carter made a speech, the lively welco ceremony ca to an end.
It happened to be alti.
Mason Sutton took Dirk Carter to a small restaurant across from the town governnt for a simple al.
Then, he instructed the Head of the Town Governnt Office, Deon Lewis, to arrange Dirk Carter's office, excused himself due to other matters, and left early.
The Town Party Committee and the Town Governnt share the sa office space.
The entire office building has four floors.
Dirk Carter's office is located at the far end of the corridor.
Upon opening the door and looking inside.
Dirk Carter discovered that the mayor's office was much larger than the deputy director's office at the Work Safety Administration.
The previous office was not only small but also quite old-fashioned in decor.
However, this office was completely different; you could tell that the paint on the walls had just been applied.
"Mayor Carter, knowing you were coming, Secretary Xu and I, along with a few cadres, painted it overnight. Are you satisfied?"
Seeing Dirk Carter staring at the walls, Deon Lewis quickly said beside him.
"Really? Secretary Xu painted it himself? Then I must thank Secretary Xu properly."
"Heh, as long as Mayor Carter is satisfied. My office is just diagonally opposite yours, so if you need anything, feel free to ask ."
"Okay, you can go ahead with your work."
After Deon Lewis respectfully exited.
Dirk Carter placed his personal belongings down.
He took a deep breath and walked to the window.
Originally, he intended to open the window for so fresh air, but his gaze inadvertently fell to the corner of the courtyard.
That spot was near the edge of the wall.
There was also a huge camphor tree nearby, obscuring the faces of a man and a woman.
Even though he couldn't see the faces, Dirk Carter could still be certain that the man was Chairman Edward Locke.
And the woman was Deputy Secretary Cong Duo.
The two were speaking face to face.
At first, Dirk Carter didn't think much of it, ready to turn and leave, but suddenly, Edward Locke raised his hand and slapped Cong Duo on the face.
Then he pointed at her and said sothing before hastily leaving.
What's going on?
Originally assud that Cong Duo, the young girl, would definitely cry after being hit, but she didn't; instead, she left as if nothing had happened.
Just as he was puzzled and couldn't figure it out.
A voice suddenly ca from the doorway: "Dirk!"
Dirk Carter was startled.
He turned around.
Only to see a stunningly dressed woman looking at him with a bright smile.
Seeing this woman, Dirk Carter was stunned for a few seconds, then shouted with a face of surprise, "Yvette, how co it's you?"
The woman stepped forward quickly on her high heels.
She placed her hands on Dirk Carter's arms, examining him carefully.
After a long while, she excitedly said, "You have changed, really changed; you're getting more handso and robust."
"Yvette, you too are getting prettier, more charming."
Dirk Carter said happily.
Being complinted by Dirk Carter.
Yvette's face showed a hint of shyness and she said, "Oh no, I'm getting old."
"Sis, you're only three years older than . If you're old, then wouldn't that make old too?"
"Hahaha, let's not talk about this anymore, co, let's sit and chat."
Yvette took Dirk Carter's hand and they sat down on the couch.
The woman in front of him is nad Yvette Shaw.
Dirk Carter has known her for ten years.
Ten years ago, the eighteen-year-old Dirk was brought ho by Dylan Tate for the first ti.
Dylan Tate had divorced early.
His wife took their daughter abroad and never returned.
He was busy with work and had no ti to cook, so he entrusted Dirk Carter to the neighbors across the hall to provide him als.
Yvette Shaw was the daughter of the neighbor across the hall.
At that ti, she was a nurse at the community health clinic.
Since she had no younger brother, she was very fond of Dirk Carter.
Whenever she had ti, she would take him out shopping and to watch movies.
Later on, Dirk Carter went to university.
Every holiday when he returned, he would still eat at the neighbor's.
Until the sumr of his junior year, he returned to hear that Yvette was married to a big business owner.
Dirk Carter had seen through the peephole that Yvette's husband was burly, short, and fat, with a large gold chain around his neck, looking like a nouveau riche.
But it was from then that.
They barely saw each other.
The last ti was probably several years ago.
"I heard about Uncle Dylan's passing. I wanted to attend the funeral, but I was too busy, and I couldn't make it. You're not mad at your sister, are you?"
Yvette Shaw said sowhat sadly.
Dirk Carter shook his head, exhaled deeply, and said, "It's alright, it's all in the past, let's not talk about it. Yvette, how co you're in Sunglow Town? I rember Auntie said your husband was doing business in the county?"
Upon hearing this.
Yvette Shaw's expression turned sorrowful.
She said, "Three years ago, his business failed miserably. We lost everything paying off debts, even sold the city house, and had nowhere else to go, so we returned to his hotown. Now, I run a small shop diagonally across from the town governnt to barely get by."
She told Dirk Carter.
This morning, she had sothing to do in town when she saw Dirk Carter getting off an SUV in front of the town governnt.
She wanted to call out to him but was afraid of mistaking soone else for him.
After returning ho, she asked around.
Once confird that the newly appointed mayor was nad Dirk Carter, she ca over imdiately.
After saying this.
Yvette Shaw emotionally patted Dirk Carter on the head and said, "Do you rember? Back then, when I took you out shopping, people thought you were my boyfriend?"
"Hahaha, of course, I rember. People thought I was your boyfriend to ward off those harassing guys."
"Who would've thought you'd grow up so fast! Back then, even though you were 18, you were thin and dark, still like a little kid. I rember once, when you secretly watched shower, I caught you and gave you a beating. Now thinking back, it's funny."
ntioning past embarrassing events.
Dirk Carter felt a bit embarrassed too.
He scratched his head and said, "Yvette, let's not bring up my embarrassing past anymore. After all, I'm now the mayor of Sunglow Town."
"Hahaha, I almost forgot, you're the head official here now; it's great, our little Dirk has grown up."
The phrase "little Dirk" ward Dirk Carter's heart.
With both parents gone and his dearest Dylan Tate also passed away.
In this world, he thought he had no family left, and eting Yvette Shaw today, he felt infinitely nostalgic.
"Yvette, you…"
Dirk Carter was just about to speak.
But Yvette Shaw's phone rang from her purse.
She took out her phone, and seeing the number, her entire face turned tense.
"Dirk, sis needs to take this call."
"Sis, take your ti."
After saying this.
Yvette Shaw walked to the door with the phone.
Dirk Carter sensed sothing unusual.
He took the opportunity while Yvette Shaw wasn't paying attention to lean against the door.
"You worthless woman, not staying at ho to watch the shop, where are you sneaking off to et a lover? You get back here this instant, or I'll chop your limbs off."
A man's voice shouted on the other end of the line.
