Chapter 714: Chapter 525 Mysterious Disappearance_1 Chapter 714: Chapter 525 Mysterious Disappearance_1 Professor Capek was dead, but… that was not the end of it all.
Strictly speaking, Professor Capek was rely an initiator, there was still no trace of the Silver Dusk Cottage behind him, and there were other participants who were still alive.
The Capek Research Society was initially composed of seven individuals. When Mariabel, one of them, died, the society temporarily disbanded. However, after Shirley joined, the research society still had four mbers. Now with Professor Capek dead and Shirley unconscious, it indicates at least two others are still within the school.
Afterwards, Duanmu Huai packed up Professor Capek’s files, paired the clues and data, and handed them to Chief Reschdorf, temporarily ending this series of serial killings. Chief Reschdorf sowhat breathed a sigh of relief, despite not seeing a body. Assuming Duanmu Huai was accurate, it ant that similar serial murders wouldn’t reoccur on the streets of Fog City… The police, too, could finally breathe easy.
Regarding the investigation of the Silver Dusk Cottage, Chief Reschdorf had made a promise, but he also hinted to Duanmu Huai that the investigation of this organization was extrely difficult. The reason was simple; the Silver Dusk Cottage was ostensibly a private club for the upper class. These elents were benign separately, but lethal when combined. Let alone insufficient proof that this string of murders was masterminded behind the scenes by the Silver Dusk Cottage, even with solid proof, capturing them would be highly challenging…
This was of no concern to Duanmu Huai, who jokingly said that the Tribunal would execute anyone, regardless of their status. Any heretic that has a relationship with the Evil God, even if they were the queen, would definitely face justice. Just like in Innsmouth, as long as there wasn’t evidence linking him to the cri, couldn’t he do whatever he wanted?
So, regarding Chief Reschdorf’s advice, Duanmu Huai rely nodded on the surface, clearly not taking to heart what was said…
Naturally, Reschdorf was curious…
“How did you steal Professor Capek’s safe?”
The theft in Professor Capek’s office had also been a source of amusent for the police departnt. After all, they had never encountered a thief like this. Duanmu Huai submitted the files and reports, but of course, he had to explain their origin. This was the implicit agreent between investigators and officials; you help solve a case, I’ll help you avoid charges. If there was solid evidence that Professor Capek was responsible for these serial killings, then the minor “theft” cri would naturally be overlooked.
But Reschdorf was curious about how Duanmu Huai had done it considering there weren’t any clues left at the cri scene?
“Oh, that wasn’t heavy, I…as you can see, I’m clumsy, not capable of picking locks, so I carried it back directly and smashed it.”
“…………….”
If it were anyone else, Chief Reschdorf would undoubtedly think they’re lying, but looking at Duanmu Huai, why does his story suddenly seem so credible?
“Alright, if you don’t want to say it, don’t.”
Reschdorf shook his head, instantly dismissing the matter. He didn’t plan to dwell on whether Duanmu Huai was telling the truth or not. If it was true, then his worldview would be shattered. If false, it would rely be seen as a joke. Anyway, It wouldn’t affect him, right?
For now, the case was temporarily closed. What happened next depended on developnts. If nothing similar happened in the coming months, then it could be assud that the serial killings were over. There might still be so conspiracies plotted by Silver Dusk Cottage, but for the police, as long as nothing similar happened again, it would be fine.
Technically speaking, Duanmu Huai could now leave Fog City and return to Arkham. But after so pondering, he decided to stay since Fog City seed to have more going on than Arkham. At the latter, he had a bunch of Miskatonic University students and teachers fighting over business with him. Here, there wasn’t Sherlock Hols, so surely no one would compete with him, right?
In the following half a month, Duanmu Huai enjoyed an idle lifestyle. Eventually, Mary adjusted to this pace of life. Every day, in both the morning and evening, she would exercise with Lorena, visit Shirley after school, and occasionally co to Duanmu Huai’s ho to inquire about the developnts in the investigation… Of course, there hadn’t been many changes so far.
However, soon enough, Mary brought news to Duanmu Huai.
“You’re saying sothing happened at Masters College?”
“Indeed.”
Mary looked a little uneasy, but she quickly related the incident to Duanmu Huai.
However, in essence, this incident was not sothing Mary had experienced firsthand but heard about from her friend, Asherica.
According to Asherica, just a few days ago, a notice suddenly appeared on the bulletin board near the Mathematics Building. It was assembled using letters cut from a newspaper and combined to form a sentence.
“Arrogant knight, you shall be murdered tonight — Signed, ‘The Dead.'”
At the ti, people had rely thought it was a prank and didn’t pay much attention, but the very next day, a male student from the Mathematics Departnt really did disappear…
Since the Mathematics Departnt consists mostly of n, everyone was not overly concerned, rely assuming the student had returned ho due to personal matters. After all, the students studying here were children of the upper-class and nobility, along with the middle-class families. If one suddenly left due to family matters, it would not be considered strange at all.
