Now reading: Chapter 569: The Soul of Theseus from A Dragon Idol's Reincarnation Tale, a Fantasy novel by AbyssRaven.

[“The might we elental emperors possess was unmatched. Fire’s fall from grace ruptured the balance of the world as the position of the fire primarch was forcibly ripped away from them by Danterno—always impatient Danterno. The world experienced three days of permanent night, only redied by the Origin Gods’ intervention. Their ascension to Peolynca’s first gods brought peace to the stability of the world’s mana,”] the WWEE stated, their voice trembling with a mix of frustration and genuine gratitude. [“We elentals had the chance to claim our spots for so long, yet we didn’t. Procrastination? You didn’t even have to think. None of us took our roles as elental primarchs seriously, yet these invaders from a foreign world took the chance imdiately. They did not wait for us to make a move; they took the responsibility we should have had and accepted their role as this world’s protectors. Usurpers they might be, but they…”]

They paused as the scene before us changed, morphing into a mory between Aurena and the Light Elental Emperor. Armies assembled with the soldiers and warriors on both sides being empowered by the newly established Divine System. Faemancers could be seen on both sides, though the majority supported Light’s armies. Aurena, on the other hand, had more people who adapted well to the Divine System, including those who beca her first blessed.

Amongst the latter were Andira and Erithia. The sisters who would in the future beco part of the Light Pantheon acted as you would expect. Andira guided Aurena’s faith as her Saintess, while Erithia led everybody with her sword and command, acting as one of the commanders of this massive holy crusade.

The schism between these people reminded of the current situation with the church of Aurena. People who once shared the sa faith and religion were now on two opposing sides, vying to beco the truth.

[“The blessing of the Origin Gods validated their existence to those seeking strength, but the Divine System was truly the biggest catalyst for Peolynca’s acceptance of our ‘usurpers,’”] the WWEE said. [“Not only did it grant us the power of spells through skills, it also visualized our growth, rewarding us to strive for power. Those untalented in the use of mana could beco mages, and those born with weaker bodies could beco warriors through hard work. It equalized an unequal world!”]

The mory froze as the WWEE let out a feral scream, letting out centuries’ worth of anger.

… They’re acting like an onnikai. All that frustration has to be directed at sothing like those dead fae would. Is it towards the gods or is it towards their own inadequacy? Their failures? … Huh?

Sothing was wobbling in the sky for a mont, similar to a heat shimr in the desert. Though similar to a mirage, it disappeared once I gave it a close look. Furthermore, my attention was drawn back to the war before , only to see that the mory skipped over the massive clash right to the conclusion of it all—to the “death” of the Light Elental Emperor by the hands of the church of Aurena’s blessed.

Yet, even this mory lasted but a mont, like the previous slideshows. It did not linger too long on this, probably ‘cause the WWEE never truly witnessed it. Though, what was clear was that Andira would soon use Light’s remains to create [Providence’s Will].

[“My mind does not have any recollection of those tis,”] [Providence’s Will] replied once I ntioned this fact. [“My earliest recollection was when Goddess Andira gave this catalyst its na and when she bonded with as my first master. Though my intelligence hadn’t reached its current status until after the demon war. After Goddess Andira left in the hands of the second leader of the church of Aurena.”]

“Like a loved pet given to a new owner because the old one has to go sowhere far,” Hikari interjected. “She knew she would beco a goddess, so she left you in sobody else’s hands.”

“Though, considering your sli-like intelligence didn’t manifest after that point, she probably never planned this all to happen. So… then I have to question sothing.” My mind wandered to that mont of blankness after the Dark Elental Emperor’s assimilation into the shadow world. “That mory in the shadow world is completely purged from Hikari’s and my soul. It’s completely blank. Can’t recall what just happened there… but I still rember Aurena’s voice. I am sure she said, ‘Do not look at us, Hestia. Hikari.’ before everything started to go blank. That mont was when the Origin Gods started their invasion, correct? So when you—”

[“We blocked your sight because witnessing them in their original forms would be witnessing the Origin Gods without all their protective asures,”] the EEE answered. [“Their appearance during that one mont was their pure Edjurian self, before they adapted to the world of Peolynca. I rember that mont… even our souls, fortified by the faith of our followers, felt fear for them. How can you, a mortal, withstand divine aura if we, demigods, cannot? My might may have fallen, but my soul is still that of a forr earth primarch.”]

In other words, EEE was acting as a shield similar to Klea for Ellaine. Which begged the question why [Providence’s Will] was able to do so when the Light Elental Emperor supposedly died. Or, at least, that would be what I expected once they got turned into a catalyst.

[“All that matters is that the soul remains intact,”] the EEE said. [“And even if they are now only a re sli intelligence, Wind, Water, and I can sense our old friend is there. Rember. The God of Death authority was assud by Marsven once he beca the primarch of the dark elent. This was years before he wed his Peolyncian wife and even more years before his firstborn assud his responsibility for him, and I presu Marsven probably had to teach Ilsaphone how to perform her tasks. Only that primordial could really answer this question.”]

As the God of Progression, Defiance, and Fate, Marsven sounded pretty similar to Gel’Glariri in how they acted when it ca to allowing certain aspects. Well, I also knew next to nothing about those two gods since I had no contact with either, but considering how Gel’Glariri gave the ability to usurp divine mana and how Marsven allowed Klea to survive until this day, both sounded like wild card-type gods. Spontaneous.

Though… if that really was the case, then wasn’t [Providence’s Will] a bit like in this case? Their mories were gone, but the soul was still that of the Light Elental Emperor. Although, considering how all of this happened, it seed more like an error in the process. It didn’t feel like Andira herself wanted the ego of the Light Elental Emperor to remain in the catalyst since [Providence’s Will] stated its intelligence wasn’t fully ford before Andira beca a goddess.

Was this all actually an accident?

[“Yes,”] [Providence’s Will] answered the mont I had that thought. [“It might be so. Maybe a shard of their soul remained in , and that is why I felt a need to know about the Wind and Water Elental Emperor. Why I felt a kinship. My mories weren’t shattered and lost like yours, Hestia and Hikari; it is more accurate to call a simple shard of that forr demigod that retains none of their mories, but so of their personality.”]

“Maybe that is why you dislike us so much,” Hikari stated. “Our soul wasn’t just touched by an Origin and subordinate God, but also that of an Edjurian God in Gel’Glariri. I beca the sa kind of usurper your forr incarnation despised. Look how they rallied their followers to take down Aurena’s growing faith.”

[Providence’s Will]’s floated forward to the scenery of its past incarnation’s defeat. [“Yes, and this is why I feel so inquisitive. I wish to know more. What happened to the rest? Dark was destroyed by Goddess Aurena and God Marsven in their initial invasion, causing the forr Dark Primarch to ld with the world of darkness—the sa shadow world dark mages use for many of their spells. Fire was extinguished by God Danterno, becoming the catalyst of Carmaniate’s flourishing and varied, environnt. Light beca . So, what happened with the others? How did all of you end up in your circumstances?”]

[“What is there to say?”] the EEE scoffed.

[“Verily… our failures are known to the world already. We ‘died,’ yet the Origin Gods could not completely exterminate us since our very existence is related to Peolynca.”] The mana cloud of the WWEE grew in size, becoming thicker and larger as they extended so of the cloud behind them. We followed the cloud as if it was a hand, pointing at the changing scenery. [“It nothing more than destruction.”]

“Arrrgh, no! Leave alone! I-I need to perfec—” were the EEE’s last words before mana was sucked out of the earth, flowing towards the sky as Crustacia’s current appearance as a dwarven woman slightly materialized above the clouds. She clenched her hand, turning the EEE into a pressurized piece of coal.

“Haaaa… you had such an amazing foundation, Earth Primarch. Watch. Your children. They are flourishing, but like every child, they yearn for their father’s approval. They wished for your eyes to watch them as they kept praying to you even after you left the mortal realm. Yet, you did nothing but continue trying to play in your box of sand like another child. Watch.” Crustacia spread her arms as she let the piece of coal fall towards the earth. “Watch from within the earth as your children grow. Not even a year has passed since I took up the mantle as Earth Primarch, and your patron race sought for answers, solutions, and care. I cannot fix their biological makeup. They wouldn’t be the ‘inko’ and ‘taz’ any longer, but I can grant the seekers ways to alleviate their inability to cast magic. Of course, within the rules of Peolynca.”

… So even in the mories of the WWEE, Crustacia had always been like that, huh? Her accent had changed, but it still seed like she took her role as a god seriously.

The pebble made from the EEE’s mana was dropped into the Ankoran mountain range, falling into its many creeks and tunnels until it settled at the very bottom. The mories ended here, but the actual Earth Elental Emperor still had more to say.

[“The world changed slowly as I slumbered in the crust of the world. Earthquakes, the movent of magma, and the changing of mana moved around until the area around was turned into a dungeon. There I remained in complete silence until I was revived by the Prince of Greed for the sake of Maagneil’s plans to create a mana core with true earth mana,”] they retold. [“I presu the demonkin found when they were infiltrating the northern nations. With all those envies and how their wrath looks like normal humans, I wouldn’t be surprised.”]

[“The invader’s children seek claimancy over this world’s mortal realm and to invite more of the usurpers to this world. At least, that is what I obtained from Tasianna and Stain,”] the WWEE snarled. [“The Origin God’s entry into the world invited their energy to this world, transforming so of it into the demonic mana we know today. Yes, their dungeons confine demonic mana and an overabundance of it, but their existence in this world has stained Peolynca since then. This is what a god is!”]

The scenery was ripped apart like a piece of paper, splitting the world into two. Two different mories began to manifest, with the left showing a view of the abyssal depth lit up by a giant blue-glowing coral stake piercing the bottom of the ocean, causing the turbulent waters to swirl around it, while the right depicted a massive storm ravaging the sky above the clouds, even reaching the end of Peolynca’s atmosphere, touching space.

On the left, the massive whirlpool that looked large enough to swallow up an entire tropolitan like New York started to calm down as the bits and pieces of a giant creature started to float down to the bottom like a corpse. Its appearance was indescribable as its body was eviscerated in a blender or torn to shreds by a school of sharks, oozing out bioluminescent blue blood, sharing the sa shade as a water spell’s magic circle.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

A giant kraken slowly drifted down, casting a shadow on the remains of the creature with the giant coral stake. As the beast opened its maw, small creatures started swarming out of the mouth, eating up the remains of the monster like small piranhas, until only a single core remained.

“… You usurpers,” I heard Water’s voice echo through the water, causing distant bright eyes to open in the deep black darkness away from the coral stake. “You—”

“Deign with the na of ‘Plesia,’ forr Water Primarch. We chose a world without a god to find a new ho, and Peolynca hasn’t had a single one take up its divine authority since its birth as a habitable planet. You may call us usurpers, yes, but the world and its inhabitants cried for a god for their faith to be directed towards. Yet, none of you had decided to take it upon yourself to shoulder such a responsibility,” Plesia’s voice shook my soul, causing a pain to creep up on my chest. Noticing this, [Providence’s Will] and EEE blocked Plesia’s form from Hikari’s and my sight. “We Edjurl hear these voices and answer them. Whether your world receives a benevolent god, a neglecting divine presence, or one who only wishes to play with mortals depends entirely on luck. I am an usurper. Peolynca is now mine. I will protect it from destruction, even from its own inhabitants!”

Sothing burst out of the kraken’s mouth, causing the creature’s head to widen to the point that it looked like it might explode. The eyes in the distance vanished as pure darkness shrouded the abyss, once again.

“So watch , Water Elental Emperor. Watch as a god changes this world.”

And the core was swept away by the waves as the kraken dissipated in a cloud of blue particles. The coral stake broke into a billion pieces, feeding the detritivore-filled world of the seabed.

The mory burned away like fire as our view was entirely replaced by the one on the right side. There, in the eye of a storm, a fairy with rainbow-colored wings grabbed a green mana cloud just as it was about to leave Peolynca’s atmosphere, pulling it back as it started to beg for its life.

“No, no! No! I don’t want to die! Leave ! I don’t want to die!” Wind cried.

Zephira pulled the defeated elental closer to her, whispering, “I know. Yet your presence is needed for this world, little one. You are Peolynca’s primarchs, even if we had taken over your position. We still need you to remain as our forms slowly assimilate the ener—mana. Wind Elental Emperor… I know this is not enough to make up for what we did, but know that the fae will be in my care. I will protect them as you once did.”

[“You didn’t!”] the WWEE voices shattered the mory, causing it to shatter like a broken glass panel. [“You deem yourself a Goddess of Fairies, yet where were you when the War for the Faefolk happened? Where is the god who will raise us elentals over this disappointing state, when we were the ones to bless the world with our mana and spell casting? We have been forgotten for Origin Gods and Subordinate gods, as the humans, beastn, and demonkin dominate the world with their crisis! The endless wars caused by—”]

“I agree,” I said.

[“… Pardon?”] An unannounced statent was enough to topple the WWEE’s monologue, drawing his attention back to the actual issue. Well, two issues.

“The God of Elentals or God of Faefolk does not exist. You can criticize Zephira as much as you want, and I wouldn’t bla you for having a grudge against her and Plesia for what they did to you. Though blaming them for a mortal issue feels like you’re simply trying to aim your anger for being stuck on Frozen Nest at sobody. Whether they be dragons, humans, or the gods,” I said, seemingly striking a nerve as the elental’s form started to resemble the giant centaur-spider amalgamation they assud in reality.

Hikari continued driving the knife inside. “You’ve stolen our friend’s mories, so you must also know the rules the gods have imposed on themselves, and one of those included the ‘no direct intervention’ rule. However, we ask you this: if you believe Zephira did nothing to help the faefolk, then what about the many wind elves, Zephira’s blessed, or how the Revolution Queen, a Crustacia blessed from Earth, all participated in a war to strike the Folschreck Empire for the sake of the faefolk? Or are you mad that they didn’t instantly solve the problem with the snap of their fingers, since you believe a god should be an embodint of strength so mighty that even a natural catastrophe wouldn’t match? What exactly are you even mad about?”

[“Then do you believe such a sorry state is acceptable? We elentals have done so much for the world, yet most of us are devolved into re prey for so beings like you dragons. Your kin do not even wait for a fae to naturally turn into a monster, like into a treant, but they have attacked ice elentals for centuries as if they were similar to beasts. Tell , what has Zephira done for this issue?”] the WWEE retorted, literally fuming steam from their body. [“I am willing to stand up and fix our mistake! Even after over 2500 years, I am willing to correct our mistake! I will beco the God of Faefolk! I will usher in a renewed era for us, so that we may teach the young how we once lived!”]

“And you think every fae wishes for that? You agree that a god is an ideal for their worshippers, so what exact ideal do you represent? Even if you wish to beco a god, your apotheosis is nothing more than borrowed power from my friend!” I shouted. “Do you really think mind-controlling her with a wonderland would be enough for to sit back and watch you ascend? You tell yourself that you will beco a god for the faefolk, but what about all the fae who died for you? The fae you used as fodder in this dreamland? Tell —what did you do with the nymphs and elentals who were inside the mountain when your sli body grew in size? Where are they?”

The elental emperor turned silent.

“Your body consud them like how your body absorbs mana, right? Like air to be breathed in to sustain yourself,” Hikari added. “You only protected Tasianna and the Ice Elental King’s core from harm when we attacked you. Our body’s eyes can detect mana, and we did not see any other signals outside of your cuddling between Tasianna and the core. Where are all those faefolk?”

[“Sa—”]

“‘Sacrifices had to be made?’ Well, I guess there is no easy solution to achieve strength, after all, and you’re trying to steal all that true ice mana from your ‘old friend’ by consuming Tasianna. You might not need to do it now, but you won’t need so ‘random’ fairy once you beco a god, right?” I snapped. “All these mories were interesting, thank you, but I didn’t co here for a history lesson to get persuaded to help you. Though, at the end of the day, it wasn’t you wanted to persuade, but your two forr companions, correct? Then, here, have the podium. Speak to them. Ask them if they are willing.”

[“Rejected,”] [Providence’s Will] answered imdiately, shocking the WWEE.

[“You gave it not a mont of interest!”] they complained. [“Where is your curiosity for your passed mories? Do you not possess anything after everything, Light? Aurena stole everything from you and struck you done, only for your corpse to be transford into this ager existence, trapped inside a tal coffin. I can grant you freedom! I can help you beco the Light Elental Emperor again so that we can reign as we should have! Your past life—”]

[“Then tell , what was the ‘mistake?’”] the catalyst asked. [“What is it that divided us? Amongst your mories, there is one point I wish to ask: why is it that the remaining elentals all fought individually? Did the Origin Gods all isolate us?”]

[“Pah, you don’t need to ask them, nor do you need to see so mory, Light,”] the EEE interrupted. [“You already know the answer: Water suggested assimilation for the sake of our survival. Gather up the hybrid-elental kings and combine them into one being. Aside from us emperors, even the kings were worshipped by many, and they most likely would have had the potential to grow into elental emperors if it wasn’t for our existence superseding theirs. To pray to the Ice Elental King was to also worship Water and Wind. It was the first ‘Origin-Subordinate god’ relationship.”]

[“It was our only way to survive!”] the WWEE shouted. [“Look at us! Look how all of us ended! That is why I said that it was our only option left and history has proved correct! By combining every emperor and king into one being, we could have had a chance to reobtain our seat as demigods! Only then can we beco gods! Look at you speak, Earth. As if your futile attempt to persuade your miserable, imperfect creation amounted to anything. They rejected you, and Crustacia stomped on you like a pebble for attempting to claim revenge on them!”]

[“Twice, yes. Twice I tried to destroy my own creation,”] the EEE admitted. [“However, this isn’t about , Water… although, is it Wind? Who are you truly?”]

[“It is I.”]

[“Who? Water? Wind? Which ego is speaking to us, right now? At least with this blessed here, I know there are two similar souls, but what about you, old friend?”]

[“It is… us, of course.”]

[“Then why do you keep calling yourself with I? The dragoness speaks with ‘us.’ ‘Our body.’ ‘We.’ Those words that symbolize more than one person. And you still do not understand why I rejected that foolish idea of yours? You wish , an elental, to give up my freedom to assimilate into your body, Water? Wind? Who is to say that my ego would surface in that concoction of a solution? Haha, but if you ask , I know exactly whose ego won the battle,”] the EEE paused, causing this tensed situation to only grow more uncomfortable. With a mocking sneer, the Earth Elental Emperor gleefully continued, [“Water. The only personality left is Water. How do you think I know it? Because Wind suggested to flee off the planet. They have always been more attuned with their fae self than the rest of us, and you had over 2500 years to brainwash into your desired plan.”]

[“Nonsense! Wind is still within —us! You need only wait! Wind… must be slumbering, right now. Yes! Their personality isn’t appearing in this wonderland! They must be fighting outside to protect our body!”]

“Cope more,” Hikari and I said in unison.

[“Be quiet!”] the WWEE shouted.

[“Because she speaks the truth,”] [Providence’s Will] stated. [“I am no longer the Light Elental Emperor, even if this soul is still theirs. What makes a person a person are the mories and souls within it. I lack all of them and I cannot recall any of those past mories, even with all this stimuli. Am I truly still the Light Elental Emperor if I cannot rember?”]

“It is your choice,” Hikari said and I nodded.

[“Correct, which is why I identify myself as an intelligence born inside [Providence’s Will]. I am Goddess Andira’s creation, and I shall remain as such. This is why I reject your proposal, Water and Wind.”]

The EEE floated forward. [“I will as well.”]

[“Earth! You would dare do it once again?”]

[“Pah, I did it last ti because I was stubborn. No, this ti I do it knowing exactly what would happen to . I have been used as nothing more than a core to fulfill another’s dream already. Water, to beco a god is your dream. It isn’t mine. I still yearn to create the perfect dwarven race, and I know that you cannot tolerate this ambition of mine. Why would I wish to give over my body so willingly?”] Earth cackled as the WWEE yelled their na in frustration. [“I ca here to support the dragoness. I might have accepted to beco bait to repay Hestia and Fugnarus, but a part of still wanted to see my old friends. I have seen you, Water, and I will miss Wind. I will not help you now, but instead, I have decided to prevent you from consuming the life of a young fae. Our ti is over.”]

[“It shall not be over while you remain in my body!”] WWEE roared. [“You will not escape! You will remain here as I devour all that divine mana in your body—”]

“We are also masters of our own soul,” I said before pouncing at the distracted elental, touching them similar to how Hikari touched the Prince of Envy to usurp their control over this ntal world. With a single touch, I felt a power surge into , once again confirming the amount of demonic energy stored inside this sli body. “And now it is our turn to present an argunt.”

[“No—!”]

I ripped open the space inside the WWEE’s body before my group all jumped into it. Usurping so of the demonic mana inside this elental’s body had been a success twice now, and with the elental sowhat agitated, this was now the best opportunity for to proceed towards Tasianna!

“If you really want to be the god for the faefolk, then you better ask the person responsible for your power up!” I shouted into the void of this mory, letting my voice echo my thoughts loudly as the darkness of this ripped space was filled with light, replacing the battlefield the WWEE wanted to show with that of a peaceful forest.

The WWEE tried to corrupt by having their mory of the Origin Gods corrupt , so it was only fair of Hikari and to ruin his plan, right?

“Tasianna!” I shouted as I noticed a blue-haired fairy walking with a fairy child inside the garden of a beautifully crafted wooden palace. Although I was now around her size, I knew I was currently inside the fairy village inside Saelariel. At least, her mories of her village.

“L-Lady Hestia!”

The Ice Elental King’s power is yours alone, Tasianna. No one deserves to steal it away from you!
