Now reading: Chapter 658: A Magical Blood Pressure Monitor? Indeed, Many from A Hospital in Another World?, a Adventure novel by 加兰2020.

"Blood pressure gauge... blood pressure gauge... blood pressure monitor..."

Garrett frowned deeply.

In most magic, or rather, in most spells irrelevant to dicine, he was only "capable" of using them. As for the principles, modifications, or variations, he was completely clueless.

For instance, using Mage Hand to transform into hemostats, toothed or smooth forceps, hooks, and even obstetrical forceps, he could do effortlessly, with precise transformations and perfect control of force;

However, for other spells under the School of Sculpture and Modeling, like how a levitating disc could increase its load as the mage’s level increased, or how a force hand could control its strength to trip, grab, push away, slap, or even disrupt spells...

Sorry, no idea.

Now, wanting to create a magical version of a blood pressure monitor, Garrett’s first thought was to use a force field instead of a cuff and airbag to apply pressure. But how about capturing sounds with a stethoscope?

How could he make sure the monitoring mage accurately detects the weakening or disappearance of sounds associated with heartbeats, pinpointing the mont to asure diastolic pressure? Or even further, allowing the spell itself to determine this ti fra and display the corresponding blood pressure readings?

"Ah—"

Garrett clutched his head.

He really didn’t understand!

Specialization is key, he was an ergency doctor, not a guru in dical equipnt... Whether it’s blood pressure gauges or life support monitors, he could only use them, not create them!

"Mr. Norwood—Aurora—"

Two heads popped out from the lab. One a Transmutation Mage, and the other a Sculpture Mage, gathered around Garrett, watching him gesture:

"I want to create sothing like this..."

"Using magic instead of a cuff? Instead of an airbag?"

Mr. Norwood imdiately started pondering. As a Transmutation Mage, his daily job was to solve problems and turn other mages’ ideas into reality.

He was used to bizarre, impossible, and fantastical requests from clients. After a brief mont of thought, he spread out drafting paper and began calculating:

"How should the cuff be constructed?

How should the airbag be constructed?

Or should we ditch the force field entirely and just use air magic?

What should the range of pressure be, the sound of the heartbeat, and the sound of blood flowing in the veins, and which magical configuration should be attached to these..."

Contrary to his actions, Aurora wasn’t imdiately thinking about magical configurations. This young Sculpture Mage was still puzzled:

"Why construct an airbag? Why a cuff? If it’s about asuring blood pressure, why not asure the vascular pressure directly?"

"This..."

Garrett was torn for a mont. Truth be told, he wasn’t a specialist in dical equipnt, much less its history, so he had no concept of "why a blood pressure gauge should be built this way." Now being asked, he could only start explaining from the principles:

"Perhaps... directly asuring vascular pressure isn’t convenient? After all, it’s through the skin, muscles, and possibly several layers of clothing, which might make it inaccurate..."

"So, what exactly is the principle behind the cuff?"

Garrett began to think from scratch, from physiology, slowly organizing his thoughts:

"The cuff thod asures when the pressure inside the cuff is higher than the systolic pressure, the blood cannot pass through the arteries, and there’s no fluctuation, so no sound is heard;"

"As the cuff’s pressure continuously decreases until it’s lower than the systolic pressure, the blood is forced by the heart’s contraction pressure over the arteries, causing chanical vibrations that we can hear through the stethoscope;"

"The cuff’s pressure continues to drop, resistance lessens, chanical oscillations weaken, and the sounds heard through the stethoscope gradually decrease;"

"Until the cuff pressure drops below the diastolic pressure, resistance to the arteries drops to zero, at which point there are no chanical vibrations, and the stethoscope cannot detect any sounds."

He paused his explanation, looking around at the two:

"So, rcury sphygmomanoters and invasive blood pressure monitors are different. They actually asure the cuff’s pressure, not directly the arterial pressure—"

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

Norwood and Aurora exclaid simultaneously. Garrett didn’t pause, continuing to explain slowly:

"So, the key is the rate of deflation?" Aurora pondered slowly:

"Since the heart rate is about sixty to seventy, seventy to eighty beats per minute, deflating too quickly ans the pressure drops all at once, and nothing can be asured..."

"If that’s the principle, then we can directly asure the pressure!" Mage Norwood suddenly exclaid:

"We have sothing similar! Like the steam engine we made before, that pressure cooker, it had a pressure gauge! We can dismantle that

magic, modify it, and turn it into the corresponding blood pressure magic!"

"Record its pressure waveform!" Garrett’s eyes lit up:

"Maximum pressure, minimum pressure readings! Change the display mode to milliters of rcury, that’s what we need!"

"It’s just a matter of precision and timing! That’s not difficult! I’ll make the changes!" Mage Norwood rubbed his hands together, almost ready to dash off. After a mont, he turned to ask:

"Boss, anything else?"

"A light screen? Like an ECG? And sothing that outputs, maybe sothing that can spit out a paper strip, like we did with the ECG magic;" Garrett counted on his fingers:

"Best to make two of them! I need both! And if it can last a day, even better!"

"No problem, boss!" Mage Norover had a plan in mind, readily agreeing. Garrett turned to Aurora:

"Aurora, give us a hand too. You two, each make a version, Mr. Norwood, make the physical version, whether it’s engraved on a magic crystal or whatever, just so it works when activated;"

"Aurora, make the magical version, just create a spell that directly targets the patient’s arm, preferably lasting a while, better if each level lasts an hour."

"Please!"

"No problem, boss!"

Both mages responded at once. Then, turning around, they dashed off, searched for information, bought the necessary magical configurations, and started modifying the experint...

In less than a week, the magical blood pressure monitor Garrett wanted was presented before him.

"Boss, want to give it a try?"

Garrett took the belt from Mage Norwood’s hand, wrapping it around his upper arm. The chip pressed against the inner center of his upper arm, tightening in circles, activating the magic crystal on top—

A light screen unfolded before everyone.

"155, 98—Mage Norwood, your blood pressure is a bit high! Have you been too stressed lately?"
