The sword cleared the Dark Knight’s back, and the village changed again.
No whispers now. No bell. No soft voice working at the edges of anyone’s head. Just the sound of black plate shifting as the thing that used to be the Saintess rolled its shoulders and settled its grip.
Jas felt the difference before anyone moved. The prayer had been soft, sothing reaching for the inside of the skull. This pressed on the body. The air went thick around his chest, heavy in the lungs, and Maeve’s field bowed inward at the edges before the boss had taken a single step.
The circlet on her head burned brighter to compensate.
The black helm turned. Not toward Ronan at the front. Not toward Jas.
Toward Finn.
Finn was still closest to the steps, axe up, mud on his boots from the run that had taken her head off.
"It’s coming to you," Jas said.
"I see it," Finn said.
The Dark Knight moved.
It was fast in a way nothing wearing that much tal had any right to be.
One stride. Two. The sword ca across in a flat arc with no wind-up at all, and Finn got his axe up because his body did it before his brain finished asking.
CLANG.
The impact lifted him off his feet and threw him backward through the mud. He kept hold of the axe. Barely. He hit the ground, rolled, and ca up on one knee with both arms ringing.
[DARK KNIGHT OF THE SUCCUBUS CROSS — CURSED CLEAVE] [FINN HALE — HP: 2,340/2,340 → 1,620/2,340] [CORRUPTION EFFECT DETECTED]
"Finn’s marked," Maeve said. Her hand was already out. A thread of pale-gold light crossed the square and sank into the gash along Finn’s forearm before the black at its edges could spread.
[RADIANT THREAD ACTIVATED] [FINN HALE — CORRUPTION SPREAD SLOWED]
The Dark Knight was already following. Second swing coming down at the kneeling man.
Ronan got there first.
He didn’t shout. He stepped across Finn’s body, planted, and took the strike full on the shield.
BOOM.
The hit drove him back half a ter, his boots carving two trenches through the mud, but the shield held and his line held and Finn got back to his feet behind him.
[DARK KNIGHT OF THE SUCCUBUS CROSS — HEAVY STRIKE] [RONAN CLEARY — HP: 2,600/2,600 → 1,940/2,600] [SHIELD DURABILITY REDUCED]
"That’s one," Ronan said through his teeth. "It hits harder than the arena."
"You good?" Finn said.
"Ask after the next one."
Cillian’s lightning ca in from the flank while the boss was still planted. Both fists, full charge, straight into the chest plate.
CRACK.
The bolt crawled across the black tal in white-blue veins — and died there. The Dark Knight rocked back a half second, no more.
[CILLIAN WARD — LIGHTNING IMPACT] [DARK KNIGHT OF THE SUCCUBUS CROSS — MOVENT INTERRUPTED] [ARMOR RESISTANCE: HIGH]
"It’s eating it," Cillian said. "The armor’s eating most of it."
Jas watched the whole exchange without summoning anything.
His hand had gone to the contract space twice already and he’d stopped it both tis. Skeletons would die in one swing each. The dire wolf would last two. This wasn’t a wave floor where bodies bought ti. Weak summons here were just mana thrown into the mud.
He held, and he watched, and he waited for the right shape of mont.
The aura surged again, and Maeve made a decision.
"Sanctuary’s not enough for this," she said. "Hold still, all of you."
She put two fingers to the white stone at her brow.
The circlet answered.
Pale-gold light ca off it in a ring, spreading out through the formation at chest height, and where it passed, the red-black pressure thinned. Not gone. Thinner. Finn’s grip steadied on the axe. Ronan’s shield arm locked back to full height. The flicker that had crept into Cillian’s lightning smoothed out.
[PURIFY ACTIVATED] [APOSTLE’S RADIANT CIRCLET RESPONDING] [DARK MANA CORRUPTION REDUCED] [PARTY HOLY RESISTANCE MAINTAINED] [NTAL INTERFERENCE RESISTANCE STABILIZED]
The breath ca easier in Jas’s chest, like a hand had co off it.
The chat caught it instantly.
[TRBWatcher]: Circlet active.
[GuildScout_EU]: That aura dropped the SECOND Maeve triggered it.
[FranceRaidNet]: That is the Floor 45 artifact. Live. In use.
[RaidStatsGuy]: Without that circlet this party is already moving at half speed.
[Anonymous donated €10,000]: Maeve is holding the entire resistance layer
"How long can you run it?" Jas asked.
"Long enough," Maeve said. "Don’t waste it."
The Dark Knight ca at Ronan next, and the fight found its shape.
It pressed the shield. Again and again, testing angles, and Ronan answered every one — shield up, shield left, shield braced low when the sword dropped for his legs. He didn’t give ground he didn’t choose to give. Every ti the boss tried to walk through the formation, it found the sa wall in a slightly different place.
"Left side," Ronan called. "It keeps loading the left."
Finn used the openings. Each ti the Dark Knight committed to the shield, he ca in on the flank and swung for the gap between plates — and each ti, the sword changed angle mid-stroke to et him. Not blocked by luck. Read. The thing wasn’t just strong. It knew how to fight.
"It’s countering mid-swing," Finn said, backing off a third exchange with a fresh line scored across his pauldron. "It’s reading the commit."
"Then stop committing alone," Jas said. "Cillian. Pick a point."
"Right shoulder joint," Cillian said. "Where my first bolt landed. The resistance dropped a fraction on the second hit. It stacks."
"Then stack it."
Cillian started calling his strikes. "Shoulder!" — bolt. "Sa point!" — bolt. Finn tid his axe to land where the lightning had just been, and the third ti they doubled up on the joint, the black plate there dulled where everywhere else it shone.
Maeve kept the back line running through all of it. A pulse of light into Ronan whenever the shield took a heavy one.
[RADIANT PULSE ACTIVATED] [RONAN CLEARY — HP: 1,940/2,600 → 2,240/2,600] [BLEEDING EFFECT STABILIZED] [CORRUPTION BUILDUP REDUCED]
Jas hung back of all of it and watched the armor.
Every ti it took a real hit, the black plates pulsed. A dull red glow under the surface, there and gone. And the pulse didn’t start at the wound. It started at the back of the armor — the side facing the shrine — and rolled forward.
He looked past the boss, up the steps, at the Succubus Cross burning over the doors.
It was still beating. Slow and steady. Like a heart.
He didn’t have the whole picture yet. But the shrine wasn’t done being part of this fight. He was sure of that much.
The Dark Knight stopped testing.
It feinted at Ronan’s shield, and when Ronan set for it, the boss pivoted off the feint and went around him. Faster than the last ten exchanges. It had been saving the speed.
Its line went straight at Finn.
Finn brought the axe up, but his feet were wrong — he’d been mid-step into a flank run — and Ronan was half a stride too far to cross back in ti.
"Jas—" Maeve started.
Jas was already moving his hand.
[SUMMON CONTRACTED UNDEAD] [ABYSSAL VENOM PYTHON — LEVEL 20] [CONTRACT SLOT ACTIVE]
The mud beside the shrine path exploded.
The python ca up out of the ground from the side — not in front of the team, not through their formation — and hit the Dark Knight at full extension while its sword was still mid-stride toward Finn. The fangs slamd into the black armor at the shoulder and the impact moved the boss. Two full ters sideways. First ti anything had moved it.
THOOM.
[ABYSSAL VENOM PYTHON — VENOM STRIKE] [DARK KNIGHT OF THE SUCCUBUS CROSS — ARMOR INTEGRITY REDUCED] [VENOM EFFECT: PARTIALLY RESISTED]
The snake didn’t release. It flowed off the strike straight into a coil, body wrapping the Dark Knight’s chest, sword arm, legs, scales grinding over plate as it cinched down and dragged the boss bodily away from the shrine steps and into the open square.
The chat went up like the arena had.
[IronRingLive]: THE SNAKE IS OUT
[RaidStatsGuy]: Level 20 contracted undead. He’s had that the whole ti.
[TRBWatcher]: He waited for the armor phase. Look at the timing.
[GuildScout_EU]: First real displacent on this boss. EVER.
[Anonymous donated €20,000]: NECROMANCER.
For the first ti since the helm ford, Team Zero had the square.
"Reset," Jas said. "Now."
Ronan stepped back into his anchor point. Finn got both feet under him. Maeve threw a brand onto the shoulder joint where the plate had gone dull.
[HEXLIGHT BRAND APPLIED] [DARK KNIGHT OF THE SUCCUBUS CROSS — WEAK POINT EXPOSED]
"There," Jas said. "Everything on the brand."
The python held the coil. Ronan ca in and pinned the trapped sword arm flat with the face of his shield. The Dark Knight strained against both, and for the mont it took to strain, it was still.
Cillian hit the brand first.
CRACK.
Finn hit it second, axe coming down on the sa point while the lightning was still crawling.
THUNK.
Jas put a Necro Blast into it third — not a wide shot, a single bolt into the marked joint where the other two had landed.
[CILLIAN WARD — LIGHTNING IMPACT] [FINN HALE — AXE STRIKE] [NECRO BLAST ACTIVATED] [MANA: 1,420/1,420 → 1,390/1,420] [DARK KNIGHT ARMOR DAMAGED]
The black plate at the shoulder split.
A crack ran out from the brand point, thin and bright-edged, and under it sothing glowed the sa red-black as the Cross.
[RaidStatsGuy]: Armor crack CONFIRD.
[GuildScout_EU]: Stack the sa point. That’s the whole fight.
[TRBWatcher]: It can be damaged. Two parties died without learning that.
For a few seconds it was a machine. Ronan pinned, the snake crushed, Maeve branded, Cillian burst, Finn punished, Jas read and called. Five people and a python who had t each other a week ago, working one weak point like they’d drilled it for a year.
The crack widened.
Then the Cross answered.
The pulse ca down the steps before anyone saw it move — a wave of red-black light off the shrine that rushed across the square and poured into the cracked armor.
[SUCCUBUS CROSS RESPONSE DETECTED] [ARMOR REGENERATION ACTIVE]
The split plate began to close.
Jas watched the bright edge of the crack dim and knit, tal flowing back across the gap like the wound was running in reverse.
And the Dark Knight planted its feet.
It stopped straining against the coil and started working instead. One arm tore free — the pinned one, straight up through the gap between shield and scale — and the gauntlet closed around the python’s body just behind the head.
The snake cinched down harder. Scales scread on plate.
The Dark Knight ripped it loose anyway.
WHAM.
It tore the coil open and slung the python’s front half into the mud hard enough to bounce, and Jas felt the hit arrive through the contract a half second later, a cold spike behind his eyes.
[CONTRACTED UNDEAD DAMAGED] [ABYSSAL VENOM PYTHON — HP: 9,500/9,500 → 5,120/9,500] [CONTRACT FEEDBACK DETECTED] [JAS GANNER — NTAL STRAIN INCREASED]
The python recoiled and ca back up into a low coil beside him, hood spread, wounded and angry. Venom ran off its fangs and hissed where it hit the red marks in the mud.
The Dark Knight rolled its freed shoulder.
The shoulder where the crack had been.
The crack was gone.
"Hold," Jas said, before Finn’s first step finished. "Finn. Hold."
Finn held. Barely.
Ronan ca back to anchor, breathing harder than before. Maeve’s field flickered at the edge as the boss’s aura surged off the fresh repair, and she set her feet and steadied it. Cillian threw one more bolt at the repaired shoulder and watched it splash off plate that resisted better than it had five minutes ago.
"It’s stronger," Cillian said. "The repair ca back harder than the original."
Jas wasn’t looking at the boss anymore.
He was looking past it. Up the steps. At the Cross over the doors, still pulsing, slow and patient, and now he could see the rhythm of it plainly — because every pulse of the Cross matched a pulse under the black armor, the two of them beating in ti like one thing in two places.
The armor hadn’t healed itself.
The shrine had healed it.
The chat saw the sa replay he’d just watched live.
[TRBWatcher]: Shrine-linked regeneration. Confird.
[RaidStatsGuy]: The cross repaired the armor. Fra by fra, the light cos FROM the shrine.
[GuildScout_EU]: You cannot kill this thing while that cross is active.
[LondonTowerWatch]: No previous team ever got far enough to learn this.
"The cross is healing it," Jas said.
Nobody answered for a second. Then Maeve, flat: "Of course it is."
"Then what are we hitting it for," Cillian said.
"We’re not," Jas said. "Not like this."
The Dark Knight raised its sword again.
Behind it, the Succubus Cross burned brighter, and every red mark in the village lit at once — the mud, the doorways, the lines they’d broken in the first phase, all of it glowing again. The prayer wasn’t coming through a voice anymore. It didn’t need a voice. It was feeding straight into the armor.
"I can hold the corruption off us," Maeve said. The strain was in her voice now. "Not forever. Whatever you’re going to decide, decide it soon."
Ronan braced.
Cillian’s lightning ca up both arms.
Finn spat blood into the mud and lifted the axe again.
The python coiled lower beside Jas, hood flat, watching the armored thing the way it had watched the ogre on Floor 10.
Jas looked from the black sword to the red cross burning above the shrine.
The boss was in front of them.
The thing keeping it alive was behind it.
