Jenna hesitated for a mont, then finally nodded and agreed, "Okay."
Autumn Shelby was delighted and quickly said, "I know this coffee shop that’s really..."
Before she could finish, Jenna looked across the street and pointed. "That’s not necessary. There’s a cold drink shop over there. That place is fine."
With that, she walked straight toward the cold drink shop.
Autumn Shelby glanced at the cold drink shop, hesitated for a mont, but followed her anyway.
The two of them entered the cold drink shop and sat down at a table by the window.
A server ca over to ask what they wanted. Jenna initially ordered two iced lemonades, but Autumn changed hers to warm milk.
Jenna gave her a thoughtful look and said, "I rember you used to love iced lemonade. Besides, why are you drinking warm milk in the middle of sumr?"
"Heh, so you still rember that I love iced lemonade, Jenna. It’s just... it’s that ti of the month, so I can’t have anything cold." Autumn’s eyes flickered evasively as she spoke.
Jenna nodded. Once their drinks arrived, she took a sip of her lemonade, the coolness cutting through so of the sumr heat, before speaking again. "By the way, did you see the news last night? About Seth and that Clara Grant."
Hearing her ask this, Autumn was secretly delighted. ’Since she brought it up,’ she thought, ’I can use this chance to find out how the Quinn Family feels about Clara Grant.’ But her expression clouded over with sadness as she said, "I saw it. I never thought... I’ve only been gone a little over a year, and Seth... he already has another woman."
These words made Jenna’s expression darken. ’What is she trying to say? She’s been gone for over a year. Is she saying Seth isn’t allowed to be with another woman?’
’Did she co back this ti hoping to get back together with Seth?’
Jenna’s expression grew cold, and her tone turned chilly. "Autumn, it’s been over a year. Since you and Seth already broke off the engagent and there’s nothing between you anymore, it’s only natural that he would find another woman, isn’t it?"
Her words were brutally direct, and an awkward expression flickered across Autumn’s face. "You’re right. I just feel a little sad, that’s all. I always thought Seth and I would be together forever, but... we still broke up, and now there’s no longer a place for by his side."
Jenna gave her another look, then turned and started to walk away. "The only reason I brought up the news," she said as she walked, "was to tell you that Seth has soone else now. As for that Clara Grant, I think she’s great. My parents seem to really like her, too."
"Besides, even if it weren’t Clara Grant, it would be so other girl. There are plenty of won in the world; there’s no need to go crawling back to an ex. So..."
She paused there, not finishing the thought, but added pointedly, "My parents have no desire to bring up things from the past, or see people from the past."
The hint was clear enough. Autumn was a smart woman; there was no way she wouldn’t understand.
Her words were a crushing blow to Autumn. ’I thought Jenna brought up Clara Grant because she was unhappy with her, because she thought Clara wasn’t right for Seth. But now she’s saying she thinks she’s great, and that Uncle and Aunt Quinn like her, too?’
’That line about there being plenty of won and no need to go crawling back to an ex... was she talking about ?’
’And when she ntioned "people from the past" they didn’t want to see or talk about... was she talking about , too?’
’Doesn’t that an I have no chance at all? That even without Clara Grant, I still wouldn’t have a chance?’
’So playing the sympathy card, bringing up old mories... none of it will work?’
