Chapter 109

ROO’S POV

Hours after firing that shot, the room had finally gone quiet.

Antonio had dragged his exhausted self away, and Nonna... she’d walked out with her. That frightened little mouse.

The satisfaction of seeing Katya flinch still buzzed in my veins. I even laughed, actually laughed until the mory of Nonna’s glare cut it short. That glare...

Dio.

I rembered how my Nonna had given the deadliest glare I had ever seen in my entire life. I’d never seen her look at like that before.

As if I were the disappointnt itself.

My jaw clenched. Instead of seeing Katya for what she truly is....a threat, a reminder of her son’s death....Nonna had rushed to her.

Protected her. Held her like she mattered.

Like she belonged here. Like she was family.

I sank back into the pillows, ignoring the weakness tugging at my limbs.

Katya.

Daughter of the man who helped destroy my family... standing in my ho like she belonged. I didn’t regret pulling the trigger.

Not even for a second. Even if my old hag hates —which I doubt—I still don’t give a shit. Because if I had been on my feet, if my body had listened to earlier, I wouldn’t have missed.

Well... I wasn’t aiming to kill her. Just a little blood. A reminder. But still. It is what it is.

My hands curled slowly into fists. Sothing is wrong. Sothing feels off. I was starting to believe it had everything to do with Katya.

I’d been in a coma for what... weeks? And Katya had been here the entire ti, getting comfortable with my old hag.

Did she think she was a guest here? What did she do to my Nonna to make her totally forget the fact that she’s an enemy?

What did she say?

How deep had she sunk her claws into Nonna?

If I weren’t this weak—if my ribs didn’t burn and my legs didn’t tremble from sitting up too fast—I would have marched to my Nonna’s quarters and knocked sense back into her. Because Nonna seed to have forgotten everything. Who Katya was. What her bloodline had done.

I hated this part most: the vulnerability. The reminder that my body isn’t responding the way my mind demands.

The longer I sat there stewing in my own thoughts, the worse the agitation got.

Everything in this damn room slled like disinfectant and stillness. Shadows clung to the corners. And I was stuck in this bed—weak, useless, breathing like an old man because my ribs hated .

My fingers twitched against the sheets. Why had I run over to her when I noticed the bullet?

Why did my body move before my brain? Why had I acted without thinking?

I don’t act without thinking. It wasn’t concern. It couldn’t have been.

That wasn’t . I would have gladly paid millions to stay at the front row as Katya got a bullet to her head, so why had I tried to be a hero which is ironic, since I’m a criminal?

Was it because I was caught off guard? Maybe I just didn’t want her dying before I understood what ga she was playing.

Or was it because I wanted to still have her to tornt more?

No.

That couldn’t be it. Lately, before my coma, I had tornted her well enough. But let her be rest assured. If my Nonna is stupid enough to still make her my assistant, I would gladly take her in.

My eyes drifted to the stack of papers on the bedside table. The ones Antonio had dropped off before those won interrupted.

It was the updates on their findings about Boris and Ivan while I was in a coma. They had found out where Boris was staying but didn’t do anything without my consent—because I was unconscious.

With a low exhale, I dragged my body upright, every muscle protesting. My ribs pulsed with a sharp warning, but I ignored it. I reached for the papers, fingers brushing the edge of the stack.

My dical reports were there too, but I ignored them. It would take a month to be fully well, so I didn’t give a shit.

I looked over the report on the most important target. The bastard Boris. His boss Ivan was still nowhere to be found, but and Boris had a new score to settle. And I would start all over again... with his daughter.

The door clicked.

Not fully opened—just enough for a sliver of light to spill into the room.

I tensed imdiately. Every instinct sharpened, ready to gun down whoever dared interrupt while I was barely holding myself together.

A nurse stepped in, her eyes flicking to and then quickly away, like she expected to bite.

"Your hourly dose, Mr. Roo," she said, and I waved her off with a grunt, signaling I’d take care of it.

The nurse gave a wary glance but didn’t argue. She straightened, murmured politely, "Very well, here." I looked up to take the dose, but she was empty-handed.

I was already in a bad mood, and if this nurse thinks she has ti for hide-and-seek, she’s clearly sick in the head.

But then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw her.

Katya.

She was holding a tray with my dose and a glass of water. She looked so small compared to the nurse that I hadn’t noticed her enter with her.

Her eyes t mine for the briefest second before she set the tray on the table beside my papers.

I narrowed my eyes. So my Nonna hadn’t changed her mind. Even after everything, she still trusted to not kill her precious. Still allowed her here.

I let out a low, humorless laugh. "So this is how it’s going to be, huh?" I muttered more to myself than to her. "My Nonna... still didn’t change her mind. Still thinks you’re... safe."

Her lips pressed into a thin line, not responding to , nor showing any expression.

Interesting. It seems my Nonna had given her so tricks, thinking she is now strong.

I leaned back, letting the pillows support , every nerve on fire.

Interesting. Really.
