Now reading: Chapter 21: Compensatory Panic from Aeterra: RuleBender, a Action novel by R. Cindralis.

The Echo-Stone thrumd with centuries of authority—then paused.

A shiver of unnatural stillness spread through the Central Courtyard. Its runes dimd, flickered, and hesitated, caught between the weight of Hearthwood law and twelve millennia of mory. Even the wind stilled. Rowan’s gaze, cold and precise, traced the subtle quiver in silver veins threading obsidian.

Not with fanfare. The Stone did not shatter. It shivered, compensated, each fissure a whisper of resistance against misaligned mana. Twisting roots—the courtyard’s living lattice reacting. Rowan noted every nuance, cataloguing the artifact’s silent distress with detached clarity.

Seraphina leaned against the edge, arms crossed, grin tight with levity. The flutter in her chest betrayed her beneath the mask. “Well. Predictable,” she said.

Rowan’s eyes remained steady. “…It is panicking.”

“Indeed,” Seraphina replied, voice teasing, masking the tremor. “It’s not yet out—rely observing its panic. Compensating… spectacularly.”

The Elders froze. Maerwyn’s quill hovered, ink sared by shock. Luthien’s fingers twitched. Ysavel gasped. Vael’s gloved hands flexed—whether for notes or reprisal, Rowan could not determine. Kaithor’s serene eyes scanned the mana lattice, calculating, verifying, tempered with disbelief.

“See, Branching fractures. Base erosion. Failure imminent. Nothing I do will prevent it. A hazard with impeccable manners, awaiting a courteous interaction.”

Rowan detected the subtle catch in her shoulders, the forced cadence of sarcasm masking panic. Mortification concealed behind bravado. The courtyard itself seed to lean in, aware.

“This curvature shift isn’t decorative,” Seraphina continued, far too cheerful for rewriting millennia of doctrine. “Misalignnt reroutes mana—slowly, then exponentially. Millennia pass. Micro-shifts compound, and eventually—” She gave the stone a near-affectionate wiggle. “…your artifact experiences a structural panic attack.”

Maerwyn recoiled, as if struck.

“Mana,” Seraphina leaned in, eyes glinting, “is dynamic. Responsive. Iterative. It follows entropy unless guided. My weave will not decay because it cooperates with ti.” She tapped the stone. “Your relic fought ti. Ti prevailed.”

Rowan scanned the courtyard. The Elders scribbled, murmured, glanced sharply at one another. Panic unfolded like a choreographed ritual:

Kaithor tilted his staff a fraction, a single gesture compressing paragraphs of observation.

Vael’s quill whispered across parchnt, capturing audacity for posterity.

Theros lifted one eyebrow—barely a millitre—but it carried authority.

Pinegrasp leaned forward, weight of centuries in his gaze. “Consequences are forming. We cannot wait.”

“Impossible—” muttered one Elder. “She’s cant—” another. “No mortal rebuilds a twelve-millennia lattice—”

“Why was she allowed near it—”

“Crossroads spawn—what of it?”

The murmurs collided. Rowan catalogued every motion, every reaction.

Theros’s voice snapped, slicing the courtyard. “Be silent.”

All eyes turned. His gaze swept the stone, the panicked Elders, tightening branches. “Heartwood is the closest to the Crossroads. Not just that—hazard zones. Untethered ergence is possible. Rogue elentals, intent-born anomalies, twisted spatial fluxes. Conclave will deliberate. Heartwood acknowledges the Anomaly. Heartwood will decide.”

Vael inhaled sharply. “You suggest we allow her to handle the Stone? Rebuild it? Unprecedented—and under Heartwood jurisdiction.”

“Unprecedented is all we have,” Kaithor replied, hands hovering over the stone, feeling residual harmonic threads. “See that? The threads… she may be able to rebuild it. Smarter than we imagined.”

Vael inclined his head, expression unreadable. “We’ll monitor. Let her attempt reconstruction. Only path to stability. And if she succeeds… Heartwood survives.”

Rowan observed silently, cataloguing every micro-cue: Kaithor’s calculation, Vael’s tension, Maerwyn’s trembling hands. She noted Seraphina’s posture, the forced cheer concealing inner panic.

The Elders exchanged glances. Luthien’s jaw clenched. “We must decide how Heartwood responds. If she can rebuild the Stone—”

Maerwyn snapped, voice sharp. “A chance is not a guarantee. Even if she can… twisting roots, do you understand what it ans to let her try?”

“It ans trusting an anomaly with a construct older than any nation,” Theros said, voice taut.

Luthien exhaled, expression softening. “…And Heartwood does not trust easily.”

The great Elderwood forming the courtyard’s central pillar groaned, deliberate and ancient, shedding a single glowing leaf. It drifted silently to the ground. A sign. Judgnt. Hearthwood was no longer rely witness—they stood at its fracture point.

The courtyard vibrated. Silver veins splintered further. Mana pulsed erratically. The Echo-Stone, long dormant in all but ritual, thundered:

“WHO DARES?”

Rowan’s hand tightened. Seraphina’s grin widened, masking the flutter beneath sarcasm. Sowhere in the layered canopy, Hearthwood exhaled. The storm had begun—and they were already inside it.
