Su Li heard it was a normal tooth replacent, and finally relaxed, feeling a mix of amusent and exasperation.
Feng Huaijin flicked Tuanzi’s forehead with his finger, and lightly mocked, "Ha, congrats, from today onward, you’ll speak with a whistle!"
Su Li thought of Tuanzi’s age and realized it was indeed ti for him to start losing teeth.
Su Li watched as Tuanzi grinned, revealing a gap among the rows of neat, white teeth...
From now on, he’ll speak with a whistle.
Su Li vaguely rembered her childhood, when her adoptive mother Zhou Rong made sugarcane juice for her, and her adoptive father Chu Hongyuan bought lots of sugarcane and kept it at ho.
To eat the sugarcane, she ended up losing several loose teeth.
Su Li looked at Tuanzi, who reminded her so much of her younger self, and felt a mix of amusent and exasperation.
Su Li crouched down and hugged Tuanzi, then took a tissue to wipe the blood from his mouth, gently comforting him, "It wasn’t dad who knocked it out. Children your age all go through this; Tuanzi, your classmates will start losing teeth too."
It was the first ti in Tuanzi’s mory experiencing toothlessness. Sniffling, he added, "It was the corn cob dad bought that made my tooth fall out."
Tuanzi felt he really did speak with a whistle, becoming increasingly aggrieved.
Feng Huaijin: "..."
Still blaming him?
Feng Huaijin looked at the bloody front tooth in his palm, feeling a sensation he couldn’t quite describe, a bit subtle.
Su Li coaxed for a while longer, and even made Feng Huaijin promise Tuanzi that he’d stop buying him corn cobs and only get roasted sweet potatoes, finally bringing a smile to Tuanzi’s face.
Feng Huaijin looked at the ti and said, "Let’s head back."
Su Li and Feng Huaijin held Tuanzi’s little hand in the middle as they walked.
The cold moonlight draped a silver glow over them, casting three shadows on the ground.
The three quietly walked forward.
Today was not only Western Valentine’s Day but also the Lantern Festival.
At this mont, Valentine’s Day had lost its significance for Su Li. Tonight, she was celebrating the Lantern Festival gathering as a family of three...
The night wind was chilling to the bone, and it seed as if there were tiny snowflakes drifting down from the sky.
As Feng Huaijin and Su Li walked, they heard Tuanzi softly say, "Papa, Mama, goodbye."
Su Li and Feng Huaijin’s hearts trembled slightly, neither turning to look, their gazes fixed on the ground.
The shadows of three holding hands had transford, now two tall figures were printed on the ground, with an empty space in the middle.
Su Li lowered her head to see her jade-like hand, still warm from Tuanzi’s earlier touch, but as the cold wind blew, it seed like the warmth was fading.
"He’s gone again." Su Li said softly, her head bowed.
She knew it all along, yet still felt a bit of ache in her heart.
Just monts ago, they had gone to the Lantern Festival together as a family, and now it was just the two of them.
It was as if everything that just happened was an illusion, like flowers in a mirror or the moon reflected in water, unreal.
Feng Huaijin looked at Su Li’s seemingly sorrowful expression, uncertain of what he felt inside.
He reached out to Su Li, a freshly cleaned baby tooth lying quietly in his palm.
Su Li couldn’t help but smile through her tears.
Wasn’t this the tooth Tuanzi just lost?
Su Li reached out to take it, carefully placing it in her bag, and said, "The teeth from the bottom should be thrown onto the roof; when I get back, I’ll throw it onto the roof..."
Feng Huaijin interrupted softly, "If he is a child from the future, then he doesn’t belong to our world."
Su Li was taken aback, and suddenly looked up at Feng Huaijin.
Feng Huaijin said, "You should know about the ’butterfly effect,’ a butterfly in South Arica gently flapping its wings can cause a tornado in M Country two weeks later. eting us will trigger a butterfly effect."
Su Li was silent for a few seconds, her violet eyes fixated on Feng Huaijin, and said, "But the future us are already dead."
