Chapter 84 – The Control He Never Had

POV: Kael

I had almost forgotten what it felt like to wake up without pain.

Not physical pain. That was easy enough to recognize.

I ant the constant pressure that had followed for years. The invisible weight that sat sowhere beneath my skin and inside my mind, always present even when I pretended it wasn’t.

For the first ti in a very long ti, it was gone.

I stood alone on the balcony outside my chambers, watching the fortress slowly co alive beneath the morning light. Wolves crossed the courtyard below. Guards changed positions. Servants moved between buildings carrying supplies.

Everything looked normal.

Nothing was normal.

My hand tightened against the stone railing.

The bond between and Liora was clearer than it had ever been before. Ever since her awakening, the connection had changed completely. I no longer needed to see her to know how she was feeling.

I could feel her.

Not every thought. Not every emotion.

But enough.

Enough to know she hadn’t slept well.

Enough to know she was trying to appear calr than she actually felt.

Enough to know she was lonely.

The realization left a bitter taste in my mouth.

The entire fortress was talking about her.

So called her the White Wolf.

Others called her a blessing.

A few called her a curse.

None of them were brave enough to say it to her face.

I pushed away from the railing and headed back inside.

There was sothing I needed to confirm.

Sothing that had been bothering since I woke up.

For years, whenever Seraphina wanted sothing from , I felt it.

Not commands.

Not words.

Resistance.

Pressure.

A leash tightening around my throat.

Even when I fought it, even when I hated it, it was always there.

Now it wasn’t.

The absence should have made happy.

Instead, it made suspicious.

I crossed the room and stopped near the desk. Slowly, I reached for a folder containing reports that had arrived overnight.

The eastern patrols.

Normally, reviewing them would have been simple.

Ordinary.

But certain reports often led to disagreents with Seraphina, especially when they involved territory she considered important.

I opened the folder and began reading.

Nothing happened.

I read further.

Still nothing.

No pressure.

No resistance.

No warning sensation crawling beneath my skin.

My jaw tightened.

I closed the folder and reached for another.

This one contained information regarding the old records I had ordered recovered from the archives.

The sa records Seraphina had spent years hiding.

Again, nothing happened.

I waited.

Still nothing.

No headache.

No sudden weakness.

No invisible hand trying to redirect my attention elsewhere.

Silence.

Complete silence.

A cold realization settled over .

The control was gone.

Not weakened.

Not damaged.

Gone.

I lowered myself into the chair slowly.

For several monts, I simply sat there staring at the papers scattered across the desk.

All those years.

All those decisions.

All those monts when I thought I was choosing freely.

How many of them had truly been mine?

The thought made my stomach twist.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Enter."

One of my warriors stepped inside and bowed.

"My Alpha."

"What is it?"

"The council wishes to know if you’ll attend today’s eting."

I almost laughed.

The council.

The sa council that had questioned my loyalty.

The sa council that had nearly blad Liora for every problem inside the fortress.

"I’ll attend," I said.

The warrior nodded and left.

The door closed behind him.

My gaze drifted toward the bond again.

Toward her.

Liora.

The woman who had burned through everything she had left to save .

The woman who should have died.

The woman who had sohow erged from it stronger than anyone expected.

I rembered the healer’s face that day.

The certainty in his voice when he explained there was no way to save .

I rembered seeing Liora standing beside my bed.

Rembered the fear she tried so hard to hide.

And then I rembered waking up.

Alive.

Because she refused to let die.

A sharp ache settled in my chest.

Not physical.

Sothing worse.

Understanding.

I finally knew what had happened.

Her awakening hadn’t simply changed her.

It had broken the last chain Seraphina held over .

Whatever power had erupted inside her that day had destroyed the connection completely.

My freedom existed because of her sacrifice.

The realization felt less like a victory and more like a debt I could never repay.

For years I had fought against that control.

For years I had searched for a way to break it.

In the end, I hadn’t freed myself.

Liora had done it for .

And she had paid a price none of us fully understood.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Through the bond, I felt a faint flicker of uncertainty from her.

Loneliness.

Confusion.

The effort she was making to hold herself together while the entire fortress stared at her like she was sothing unfamiliar.

My chest tightened again.

She was carrying consequences that should have belonged to .

I opened my eyes and stared out the window toward the training grounds below.

For the first ti in my life, there was nothing pulling at my mind.

No leash.

No control.

No hidden hand directing my choices.

I was free.

The word should have felt satisfying.

Instead, it felt hollow.

Because freedom had co too late.

And because the person who gave it to had been forced to beco sothing neither of us fully understood.

I looked toward the door, already knowing I would find her before the day ended.

Not as Luna.

Not as the White Wolf.

Just Liora.

The woman who had chosen when every reason in the world told her not to.

A slow breath left my lungs.

"I was never ant to survive this," I thought quietly.

The bond pulsed once.

Soft.

Steady.

Alive.

My throat tightened.

"And she was never ant to pay for it."
