Iris:

I got into the car with Kash. While he stepped toward the driver’s side, Lara suddenly bent down into my seat and spoke in a low voice, saying sothing that made burn from deep within.

"Consider this your last day sitting right next to him," she told . "After that, you are just his rejected mate, and I am his official mate and wife."

Before I could turn to respond, Kash had already gotten inside, and Lara’s expression changed. She smiled again, waving at us.

I started rolling up my window because I did not want to hear her breathing so close to . Kash slamd the door shut, and for the rest of the car ride, we barely spoke.

Even while we were getting onto the plane, neither of us said a word. By the ti we ca back ho, I no longer knew what ho was. Every place felt temporary to , sowhere I wanted to escape from.

And then the ti ca when I had to realize that tomorrow was Kash’s wedding.

"How are you feeling?" Luca asked, sitting on the couch while I sat on the bed with my arms folded and my legs hanging down.

"I’m fine. I just cannot wait for him to give the cure," I replied.

I checked the ti on my wristwatch. Kash had texted a few minutes earlier, saying he was coming over to hand the blue water pearl, and I had been anxious since then.

The last two days had been hectic. My kids were busy preparing for the wedding, and Kash would co and take them outside with him while I was there as well. I bought a gown too. However, there was one thing I had noticed, sothing Luca had ntioned before and was pointing out again now.

"Your mother is up to sothing," Luca remarked.

I nodded. It was strange how every ti I thought about my mother, he picked up on it. There was not much else on my mind anymore. That was how much impact she had on my life.

"I think she’s up to sothing too, but tell what you noticed," I told him, getting up from the bed and stepping over to the window. I folded my arms across my chest and watched my kids playing in the front garden.

It was early morning. Luca and Kash had brought in nannies for the children, at least three of them. My mother was anxious around them. With so many nannies moving through the house, there was a chance they might notice sothing, or maybe my mother thought Kash had sent his woman to spy on us. That was sothing my mother would do herself, so she likely assud others would do the sa to her.

"Your mother didn’t buy a gown or anything for herself," Luca explained, leaning back in his seat and tilting his head.

"I noticed that too. Knowing my mother, she would usually be the first one to go shopping," I replied, watching him nod in agreent. "What do you think is going on with her?"

He shrugged, and that was when I noticed Kash arriving. I gave Luca a small hand gesture to let him know Kash was here.

I did not know why, but a bright smile spread across my face. I felt my cheeks lift, and when I turned to look at Luca, he was smiling at too.

"You light up so much. That’s when you feel so happiness," he comnted. He had probably seen stressed most of the ti.

"It isn’t a little bit of happiness. It’s a lot for , Luca," I replied. "I cared for my brother for a very long ti, but my son didn’t have to suffer with him."

I explained why I was so upset with my mother. It was not that I was angry she worked so hard to find a cure for Wilson. I just could not understand why my son had to suffer too.

"Well, let’s go and make you happier then," Luca ntioned, referring to the cure.

I instantly turned away from the window and rushed out of the room.

My kids were already stepping inside, dancing around Kash as he smiled at them. However, the mont his eyes landed on , I noticed the way his expression hardened. My mother ca out of her room as well. She had been waiting for Kash’s arrival too.

We were both mothers, but one of us was not willing to hurt others for her child.

"Amy, why won’t you co and watch cartoons with ?" Luca told her.

Amy clung to Kash’s leg and shook her head.

"No. Why do Amy and Colin always go alone? I want to be with daddy too," she complained, hiding behind Kash’s large leg that hid her perfectly.

"I was thinking I’d stay here with you in the living room today," Kash told her as he stepped away so he could crouch down in front of her. "You can watch cartoons here while your mommy and Colin go inside. How about that?"

She looked at Colin, then back at Kash. A mont later, she started jumping up and down, excited that Kash would finally have ti alone with her.

"But what are we going to talk about, Mommy?" Colin asked , looking worried.

"You wait for in the bedroom, okay?" I told him, guiding him back to his room.

Ever since we returned, I had been anxious. I had seen Kash’s mother and sister go shopping. His sister had even sent clothes for Amy and Colin. I did not like her attention on my children, though for Kash, it ant a lot. He was happy his family cared for them.

Once Amy sat on the couch and Colin went to the room, Luca took a seat on the sofa in the living room. My mother wandered nearby. Kash and I faced each other.

"Give him this," Kash said as he pulled his hand from his pocket and showed a box. Finally, the cure.
