Iris:

I don’t know how many tissues I’ve used, crying my eyes out.

Kash smoothly offered another tissue box.

I had been sitting anxiously in the passenger seat with Kash, waiting for the guest house to co into view.

Earlier, I’d taken my phone back from him and opened the cara, watching my kids in the living room.

I felt helpless, my phone resting on my thighs, my eyes wet with tears.

Kash looked just as tense.

The veins in his hands stood out, and the way he gripped the steering wheel made his knuckles turn white.

"Has it happened to him before?" Kash asked.

"No," I replied. It was the truth. Nothing like this had ever happened before.

"There were monts when he’d been sick, but this was different," as I spoke, I began to wonder why this had happened.

There was only one explanation, my brother had woken up in pain.

Usually, he was sedated to stay asleep.

Then I rembered my mother’s threat.

There was no way my brother woke up without her knowing.

She must have done sothing.

The thought alone made my mind spin.

I had seen her act panicked, but that was only because she knew there was a cara watching.

I could only imagine how miserable my daughter must have been, staring at her brother like that.

"It’s okay. He’ll be fine. There are very good hospitals here. He’ll be well taken care of," Kash reassured as he gently placed his hand over mine.

I glanced at his hand and quietly pulled mine away, making him withdraw.

I turned my face aside, realizing that if he hadn’t cheated, I wouldn’t have had to leave and end up trapped in my mother’s cage of fake love.

My son wouldn’t be suffering like this.

But that didn’t matter now, my priority was my child.

As we neared the guest house, Kash’s phone started buzzing.

I noticed it on the dashboard and saw the call coming from the contact saved as Fiancé.

It disgusted that he had saved as Wife and her as Fiancé.

What would be next—Girlfriend 1, Girlfriend 2, Girlfriend 3?

I didn’t even know why I was so angry.

It was his life, he could do whatever he wanted.

Maybe I was blaming everyone for my son’s condition except myself.

The truth was, I was responsible.

I knew how abusive my mother could be, yet I still went back to her house with my children.

Even if she threatened , I shouldn’t have gotten comfortable.

But I did, and that was my mistake.

It only proved that twice, I’d trusted people I shouldn’t have.

"You should just answer the call so she’ll stop blowing up your phone and making my head hurt," I snapped, speaking fast just to get the words out.

Kash groaned and put the phone on speaker.

I guessed he was as anxious as I was, maybe less.

I wouldn’t say he loved my babies more than I did, or even equally.

"Yes, Lara, can I talk to you later?" he said.

But the voice that replied wasn’t Lara’s.

"I’m not Lara, your highness. I’m her personal maid."

Even my eyes turned to the screen in confusion.

"What is it? Can it wait?" Kash asked.

"Sure, but Lara has been a ss. She locked herself in her room. She’s crying and hysterical. We’re afraid she might hurt herself. Can you please co help her?"

My body went numb.

I was sure Kash felt it too because he instantly turned to and tried to switch off the speaker.

But it was too late.

"Where is her father?" Kash asked, struggling to turn off the speaker while keeping his eyes on the road.

Eventually, he managed to switch it off and held the phone to his ear.

"Okay, yeah. I’m kind of busy. Let her know I’ll co as soon as possible," he replied hesitantly.

As soon as he ended the call, he clicked his tongue, grunted, and slamd his hand against the steering wheel.

I sat quietly, feeling uneasy.

"It’s okay. Just drop off, and you can go take care of your girl," I said.

"You don’t need to tell what I should or shouldn’t do. I know my priorities," he hissed, almost as if it were my fault that he was torn between checking on his fiancée or being with his son.

I kept quiet. There was a lot I could have said, but I chose not to.

It would have been pointless.

Silence filled the car again until we finally reached the house.

The mont he parked, I rushed out, almost tripping in my hurry.

I kicked off my sandals and left them behind so I could run faster.

Before Kash could even catch up, I was already at the door, pushing it open and running inside.

The way I ran, I even shoved my mother aside when she tried to co near .

"I’m trying everything to help him, but I don’t know what’s happening to him," my mother said, putting on her best act.

Her performance made clench my fists as I dropped to my knees beside the couch.

My son’s eyes were fixed on the ceiling, his body shaking slightly.

Seeing him like that broke .

I turned my head and saw Kash arrive, his eyes wide.

He rushed over like a plane landing.

As soon as he sat next to , he touched Colin’s forehead and cheeks.

"Why haven’t you called an ambulance yet?" he almost shouted at my mother.

I looked around for Amy, but by the ti I had reached my son, Scarlett must have already taken her into the other room.

She had been doing that repeatedly, trying to keep Amy away, but Amy always wanted to co back and check on her brother.

"Because the hospital cannot help him," my mother said.

I swallowed hard and turned to her, giving her a blank stare.

Tears still rolled down my face, but I showed no expression.

She avoided my eyes and tried to talk to Kash.

"What do you an? There’s nothing the hospital can’t do. The doctors will help him. I’ll take my kid to the best hospital and get him treated by the best doctors," Kash said, his voice filled with panic as he tended to Colin.

The more he spoke, the calr my mother looked.

I didn’t know what she was trying to pull, but I was sure I’d confront her later.

"I hope that’s true," she said quietly. "But that’s not the case."

I instantly looked back at my son when I noticed his body starting to calm down.

"He’s waking up!" I almost cheered, relief washing over .

As Colin began to blink and move slightly, I lifted him and hugged him tightly.

"Mommy, Mommy, what happened to ?" he cried.

And then Kash’s phone started ringing again, and I knew exactly who it was.
