The Silver Elf Princess did not appear surprised, she simply nodded quietly and stepped back. Qian glanced at her, hesitated, but did not speak. She lowered her long spear and walked to Brand’s side: “So we are heading there, Lord?”

“The dungeon.”

“The dungeon?”

The dungeon of Fir Castle matches most people’s imagination of such a place — pitch black, gloomy, with the air filled with the stench of decay. Occasionally, a rat — often larger than a cat — scurries across the uneven stone floor. Fir Castle was built in the Green Year, approximately two hundred and forty years ago, when Erune still had to deal with threats on its borders. Thus, the original purpose of this dungeon was to imprison the barbarians captured from the forest during the war.

However, nowadays, it’s more often used to deal with those who can’t pay taxes. Peasants, poachers, and minor nobles who offended Gruding are all casually branded with a cri — sotis even skipping that step — and tossed in here. Such days in the dungeon are usually dark and endless, often lasting several years. Erune’s criminal laws were established during the kingdom’s most difficult tis, and the clauses targeting the lower class have hardly been revised over centuries, making them extraordinarily harsh.

In fact, given the dungeon’s environnt, many have died from illness here.

But after a night of battle, Brand had already ordered Antitina to release most of the peasants who were imprisoned for not paying taxes. As a result, the usually overcrowded dungeon now seed unusually quiet. Footsteps echoed through the silence in the pitch black, occasionally hitting the chains hanging from the ceiling, clanging loudly.

Bai Lu keenly caught these footsteps. “Soone’s coming again.” The old man steadied his breathing — the footsteps were steady and powerful, maintaining a consistent pace; unlike the scattered footsteps of the prison guards. Besides, since last night, it seems the prison guards in this dungeon had been switched out. The new ones didn’t have such footsteps either, they seed more like soldiers from battlefields, steady and efficient, yet subtly different — his brow suddenly twitched slightly.

The footsteps were close now.

Having spent half his life dealing with soldiers, Bai Lu had a near-instantaneous instinct for those carrying the aura of death. He heard the footsteps stop not far away, and then the rattling sound of chains echoed in the darkness — the other party was opening a door. That door led to this area, and the old man knew he was the only prisoner in this area. He couldn’t help but wonder, were they coming for him?

His heart could not help but pound wildly.

With a clatter, the chains fell to the ground. Sure enough, after a while, the first ray of light penetrated through the corner, falling before his cell. Bai Lu stared greedily at that beam of light, even though it made tears stream from his eyes, he remained motionless. He rembered how long it had been since he last saw light, ever since being captured here, he did not know the days anymore.

Could it be a change of lord?

But what good could co from the Jendener Family, he couldn’t resist scoffing lightly in his heart.

Finally, the flickering torchlight entered, Bai Lu moved slightly, letting his ssy hair cover his face, remaining still. But soon, he heard a gentle young voice, which startled him like a thunderbolt, forcing him to lift his head. “Peru Hustu, Lord Golden City, Royalist, I thought you were killed in the chaos of Everton’s rebellion?”

The old man raised his head as if enchanted, his body stiffening, pale-faced, staring at this young man he didn’t recognize. The torchlight stung him into a hunch, but he couldn’t help but ask in a hoarse voice: “You… who are you?” His mind was a ss. Brand was right, he was indeed Peru Hustu, Lord Golden City, a Royalist. During the last struggle, the Royalists suffered a thorough defeat, even the highest leader, ‘Earth Knight’ Duke Everton, was imprisoned, let alone soone like him. At that ti, he received a tip-off and fled the Royal Capital, falsely claiming to have died in the chaos of that night — but because he wasn’t a key character in the Royalist faction, he narrowly escaped disaster.
