In the center of Shafrend Town, there was an inn called ‘Forest Trout’. The innkeeper was just an ordinary middle-aged man, but the ale sold here was excellent, attracting many regular custors.

But a few youths were drinking in a corner of the bar, watching these people with sidelong glances while whispering about their own matters. Most of their parents were workers in the mining area, and they themselves were too. However, the restlessness and agitation characteristic of young people made these lads unwilling to waste their lives here; they discussed among themselves and had already decided to leave this place to explore the outside World.
They had been born in this small town and had only ventured as far as the nearby forest. They could only speculate about the outside World based on the occasional words of adventurers and their own imaginations.
After discussing for a while, they had just agreed on a ti when they heard a snort from behind them. The youths were slightly startled and turned around guiltily to see an old dwarf sitting at a table not far away.
Just like in most fantasy stories, this old dwarf had a prominent big nose and a long beard that trailed down to his waist, braided and bound with iron rings. His arms and legs were thick and muscular. However, his skin was not the healthy reddish-brown of the local Hill Dwarves, but rather a pale gray.
The youths’ expressions changed slightly when they saw this dwarf. This old fellow’s na was Audem, and though no one knew where he ca from, it was said that he was quite capable and had secured a steward position thanks to the local official’s favor.
Despite this, his temper was notoriously bad; he was strict and stubborn, never showing a pleasant face to anyone. Moreover, his own situation was less than ideal—people often saw this old dwarf drinking alone in a sullen mood. Though dwarves did love drinking, they seldom did so out of lancholy.
Unlike this old fellow, who would beco even more ill-tempered after drinking, always wearing a stern expression and ignoring everyone.
He was also extrely arrogant, looking down on everyone. People had heard him speak ill of the clerk. However, because this old dwarf dared to curse even the King when he got angry, this behavior didn’t attract much attention.
Seeing him, the youths could not help but feel things had taken a bad turn. One of the more astute ones quickly spoke kindly, “Mr. Audem, we didn’t realize you were here—”
The old dwarf cast a glance at the youths. “What, am I bothering you?”
“No, no,” the quickest to respond imdiately said. “How could that be? We were just planning to invite you for a drink, but…”
The old dwarf snorted through his nose. “Who cares about your nonsense, but let remind you, young ones, the world outside isn’t so simple. Be careful not to co back with your heads broken and bleeding.”
The youths imdiately felt as if they had been granted a great pardon, stamring out a response before pushing and shoving each other to pay the bill and quickly leaving through the front door.
As they left, they couldn’t help but curse their luck for running into the old fellow. Fortunately, this dwarf didn’t get along with most people in town; otherwise, if he went to tell their parents, those present would surely get a beating.
However, the old dwarf watched these youths leave, shaking his head. The outside World wasn’t as easy to navigate. Yet the hot-blooded youngsters were not his concern. The old dwarf was just about to lower his head to drink alone again when he paused—he saw three n and four won entering the inn from outside.
In fact, when Brand pushed the door open and entered, everyone in the hall was amazed.
