The winter of the year the Black Rose War broke out was exceptionally cold. The air seed to freeze into powder and gently drift down from the gray sky.
Jert had been lurking in the shrubs on the mountaintop all night and was almost frozen stiff.
He reached out to catch the powder falling from the sky. A slight coolness in his palm, the ice crystals lted on his hand — snowflakes. The young man, still wearing his seemingly eternal green robe of a String Mage Apprentice, looked up at the sky.
It's snowing.
The first snow of the year.
He couldn't help but think of the frequent conversations between Lord Char and that young lord, ntioning the situation in the North, the fate of the Duke's allied army and the Princess...
"The war in the North has been delayed until after the first snow..."
Jert himself was rely a noble offspring from a small gentry family. His hotown was in Karasu, a similarly remote region of the kingdom — though it was a noble family, their experiences were limited, at most just watching how those big shots lived their lives.
Life was slightly better than the average person, but recent years seed to get worse one after another.
Jert ventured out, fully aware that he wanted to change his destiny. He had studied magic systematically under a Wizard Master for a period, interacting with the ntor to learn about the outside world — a chaotic world that had a fatal attraction for young n like him in this era.
Chaos seed to be filled with opportunities.
So, after his ntor passed away, Jert embarked on his dream journey.
But his luck wasn't as good as he had imagined. Two of his companions, who were from similar backgrounds, died of illness during their travels. They had to rest briefly at Lengshan Domain and then consider whether to return or continue forward.
Unexpectedly, they encountered such an event. Gruding killed all his companions. Filled with despair, Jert only wanted to perish together with that noble.
But sotis destiny is so unpredictable.
That very evening, he t the young lord and participated in the battle. Fortunately, he continued to follow him afterward, soon becoming the first mber of Char's Wizard Group.
As Char's assistant, he had the chance to join the discussions between Brand and this Wizard Followers — of course, being young he couldn't contribute much — the two talked about the situation in the North, the Black Rose invasion of Bradamant, and Kruz.
The vision of that young lord made Jert feel like he had seen a whole new world, a height he had never before imagined.
It was also sothing his first ntor had never talked about.
At that mont, Jert knew he had possibly grabbed hold of the opportunity to realize his dreams, or perhaps had already achieved it.
Since then, he beca a wholehearted supporter of Brand. This ti, he volunteered for the reconnaissance mission in Pallas.
Coincidentally, the Reconnaissance Team needed soone skilled in spells, so he naturally was selected.
Char had complained to Brand about taking one of his capable assistants for this.
But Jert had no regrets. He felt that, instead of staying quietly by the Lord's side, it was better to attract attention through practical actions.
He was soone who yearned for adventure. Otherwise, he wouldn't have left ho and co here.
Staring at the sky for a long ti, the young man finally ca back to his senses. He rubbed his hands together — careful not to make big movents to avoid alerting the sentries below.
From the hilltop, he looked down at the grayish-yellow tents and the bustle of the camp in the forest below.
Then he heard a rustling sound from behind, where his companions were on guard. The sound was obviously from one of their own, with another possibility being needless to ntion.
Jert imdiately tensed up.
"Cabb...age..."
A strange password ca from the woods, supposedly taught to them by Char.
Jert imdiately relaxed; it was their own. He turned and replied, "Lettuce — who's there?"
"Ma Youfu."
Jert recognized the na as another wizard apprentice from their team who originally only had a nickna but was given this na by the lord.
What a lucky guy, Jert couldn't help but think.
"Jert, is the camp below the Pallas Knights'?" The gray-robed wizard apprentice crouched beside him and whispered, "But Rat and them said there was no camp here..."
