Bob's suggestion caught Luke completely off guard, but the quick agreent gave the family man a much-needed boost to his ego.

He dragged a portable grill out of the station wagon's trunk with renewed energy, then pulled out several packs of sausages and burger patties.

"Co on, everyone! Desert barbecue party! This is a once-in-a-lifeti experience!"

While he fussed with lighting the charcoal, his wife sighed and stepped in to help. Their older daughter and son-in-law Dave took the shaken younger kids back to the car to calm them down. Clearly, no one else was in the mood for an impromptu cookout.

Only Lionel showed real enthusiasm. He rubbed his hands together and crowded the grill, eyes gleaming at the raw at.

"Great idea! I'll help! I'm a damn good cook when it cos to at."

He snatched the tongs from Bob and started laying out the patties like a pro. Soon the fat was sizzling on the hot coals, sending up a mouthwatering sll.

Bob relaxed a little with soone actually enjoying his idea. He grabbed a case of beer from the car and offered it to Luke and Brando.

"Guys, want one? Sorry for dragging you out to this shithole."

Luke shook his head and didn't take it. His eyes stayed locked on the darkness beyond the fire, scanning for threats. He hadn't forgotten where they were—right next to a nuclear test site that could easily be the cult's main base.

Brando accepted a beer but didn't drink it. Instead he walked over to the convenience store window and shone his phone's flashlight inside, studying the ss.

Now that he thought about it, the gas station itself felt completely wrong. They'd driven for hours through empty desert with zero signs of human life. How the hell did this place even stay in business?

A soft scraping sound suddenly ca from the darkness nearby.

Everyone turned at once.

A short, hunched figure wrapped in a ragged cloak was shuffling toward them from the shadows. Its voice was high and whiny.

"Good people, please have rcy. Spare sothing to eat."

Bob's youngest daughter instinctively started forward, but Luke blocked her with one arm. He shot Lionel a quick look.

Lionel caught on imdiately. He put on a friendly smile and strolled over.

"Hey there, mister. Where you coming from?"

The cloak hid the man's face. Only the pitiful tone ca through.

"I'm just a poor drifter. Haven't eaten in days."

Lionel grabbed a perfectly grilled sausage off the grill and held it out.

"That's rough. Here—fresh off the fire. Careful, it's hot."

The cloaked figure hesitated, then reached out with a bony, claw-like hand.

The second the fingers got close, the hand shot forward and clamped around Lionel's throat. At the sa ti the other hand whipped out from under the cloak holding a rusty ice pick aid straight at his heart.

The attack was fast and vicious—nothing like a weak beggar should be capable of.

Bob's daughter scread.

But Lionel moved even faster.

His friendly smile never fully faded. He simply flipped his wrist and slapped the sizzling sausage straight onto the claw grabbing his throat.

"Sssst!"

The cloaked man howled and yanked his hand back.

The ice pick kept coming anyway and drove deep into Lionel's chest with a wet thunk.

It sank in almost to the hilt, right next to the old chainsaw scar.

Bob's family stared in horror. His wife clapped a hand over her mouth.

To them, that should have been a killing blow.

Lionel just looked annoyed. He glanced down at the ice pick sticking out of his chest, then the cloaked man lunged again and grabbed him by the throat with both hands now.

The sudden movent knocked the hood back, revealing a horribly twisted, deford face.

The little man shrieked with glee.

"Heh-heh! Look at all this fresh at, boys! Co get it!"

Dozens of massive, twisted figures exploded out of the darkness around the gas station—each one over six feet tall, faces warped and monstrous in the headlights.

The cloaked man grinned wider at the family's terror.

"Bang!"

A gunshot cracked across the empty desert.

The lead giant clutched his ruined knee and dropped with a roar.

Everyone froze—including the little man still choking Lionel.

In that split second Lionel's eyes went cold.

His left hand shot up and clamped around the deford man's skull.

"Interrupting soone's dinner is pretty fucking rude."

"Bang!"

Lionel slamd the man's head into the ground with brutal force. The cloaked figure went limp.

Only then did Lionel yank the ice pick out of his own chest like it was nothing.

"Goddamn it. New shirt."

He tossed the bloody pick aside, then drove it straight back into the little man's heart.

The deford attacker stopped moving instantly.

Bob's family stood frozen, brains completely overloaded by the blood and violence they'd just witnessed.

"What the hell are you waiting for?!"

Luke's shout snapped everyone out of it.

He was already holding the enchanted chainsaw. The chain started spinning on its own with a hungry roar.

"Thump-thump-thump!"

Brando had taken cover behind the van door and opened up with the AKM. The heavy rounds punched through the giants, spraying blood, but the monsters kept charging despite the holes in their bodies.

"Insane damage resistance! Bone density is off the charts!"

Brando kept firing, sounding way too excited for the situation.

"We didn't take a wrong turn. This is the place."

One giant muscled through the gunfire and grabbed for Brando's rifle barrel. Brando jerked back and kicked the monster's knee, but it didn't even flinch. The giant grinned and reached for his face.

A dark blur flashed past.

"Vrrrrr!"

Luke appeared at the giant's side, chainsaw screaming.

The spinning chain sliced clean through the monster's thick arm at the shoulder.

The giant's grin died. He stared down in shock at the stump where his arm used to be.
