The bug thrashed wildly in Luke's grip, its six legs flailing in the air as it let out a high-pitched hiss.

Cracks from the earlier impact were already trying to seal themselves shut right before his eyes. The thing's regenerative power was ridiculous.

"Still got so fight in you, huh?"

Luke tightened his fist. The bug's struggles grew weaker.

He reached into his jacket with his free hand and pulled out the Bible Hannibal had given him.

Carrie, still sitting on the ground nearby, went pale the second she saw the book. She instinctively scooted backward, fear flashing across her face.

Luke flipped it open and began reciting the solemn judgnt verses in a low, steady voice. Psionic energy flowed from him into the pages.

The bug suddenly went rigid. Its compound eyes showed sothing disturbingly human—pure terror.

It twisted and squird desperately, even biting off one of its own legs in a frantic attempt to escape.

Too late.

A bright light flared across the bug's shell. A sharp sizzling sound filled the air as its body started to burn.

The creature dissolved into ash in seconds, gone before it could even scream.

When the light faded, only a thin, translucent piece of bug skin remained in Luke's palm—fragile-looking but surprisingly tough.

[Holy Recitation LV MAX: Psionic Bonus 0.3]

[Specialty reached maximum level. New ability unlocked: Righteous Words]

[Righteous Words: Through years of recitation, you've mastered how to turn sacred words into a weapon of pure pressure. Your voice, posture, and gaze now carry a powerful psychic intimidation effect.]

[Psionic: 2.5 (2.4 0.1)]

The panel didn't give him any extra Physique or base Psionic gains. The bug had been too weak to squeeze much out of it.

Still, it left behind usable material.

Luke knelt and quickly drew a few simple voodoo symbols in the dirt. The ritual was small and simple—no need for Lionel or extra offerings this ti.

The bug skin began glowing with a brilliant white light.

Carrie's eyes widened, fear montarily replaced by pure curiosity as she watched the glow.

When the light faded, Luke picked up the skin and felt the change imdiately. The structure inside had transford.

He fed a tiny thread of psionic energy into it. The skin absorbed it and fed back a clean pulse of life energy.

A portable healing kit. Perfect timing.

He rolled up his torn pant leg and removed the crude tal splint. His shin was bruised and still slightly swollen around the fracture.

Without hesitation, he pressed the bug skin directly onto the injury.

The mont it touched skin, the thin mbrane ca alive. It stretched and sealed itself over the broken bone like it had a mind of its own.

Luke pushed psionic energy into it steadily.

A cool, soothing sensation spread through his entire lower leg.

Deep inside the bone, he felt soft clicks as the fracture knitted back together. Muscle fibers repaired themselves. The bruise faded. The swelling disappeared.

The whole process took less than five minutes.

By the ti the skin had lightened in color, his leg was completely healed.

Luke stood up and tested it, flexing and shifting his weight. Only a faint ache remained. Good as new.

"Not bad."

He peeled the skin off carefully. It looked like it had a few more uses left—five or six at most.

A consumable. Still better than nothing.

He folded it neatly and tucked it into his pocket.

Only then did he turn toward Carrie, who was still sitting against the tree roots.

Her face was deathly pale, forehead glistening with sweat, hands trembling. The uncontrolled burst of power had clearly drained her.

She stared up at him with a mix of fear, curiosity, and sothing almost like awe.

Luke walked over and looked down at her.

"Your na's Carrie, right?"

She nodded timidly.

"Do you know what you just did back there?"

Carrie opened her mouth, but her eyes filled with fresh tears.

"I… I don't know. I saw Chris turning into that thing and my mind just went blank. Then… then everything just…"

She couldn't finish. Big tears rolled down her cheeks.

Luke stayed quiet for a mont.

Carrie. That na, combined with the raw, unstable psychic power, brought back mories of an old movie from his previous life. Carrie. The bullied girl who lost control at prom and slaughtered everyone with telekinesis.

If this was that Carrie, she was basically a walking nuclear bomb—extrely powerful and extrely unstable.

But Luke was thinking bigger.

Between the weird shit he'd seen in Texas and the cult activity bubbling under the surface of this country, going solo wasn't going to cut it much longer.

He needed power. And he needed people.

A girl with massive psychic potential, still young and impressionable, who was already in over her head? That was exactly the kind of recruit he could work with.

He softened his tone.

"You don't need to panic. You actually saved Chris's life back there. Bit ssy, but it worked."

Carrie wiped her eyes and asked in a small voice, "He… he's still alive?"

"He'll live."

Luke walked over to the unconscious Chris and checked his breathing and pulse.

The kid had gotten lucky. The transformation had reversed the mont the bug died. The mutations were fading, though a thumb-sized black scar remained on the back of his neck—probably permanent.

"Let's go. We need to get him back to the bus."

Luke grabbed Chris by the collar with one hand and started dragging him like a sack of potatoes.

Carrie hurried after him, unsure what to do but clearly wanting to help.

They made their way out of the woods and back to the highway. The school bus was still parked where they'd left it.

The driver was pacing nervously by the door. When he saw Luke dragging Chris, he let out a huge sigh of relief.

"Jesus Christ, you're back! What happened to him?"

"Got stung by a bug. He'll be fine."

Luke tossed Chris onto the bus and dusted off his hands.

The students inside lost it the second they saw Chris's condition.

"Chris!"

"He's hurt!"

"Call an ambulance!"

While the chaos unfolded, Luke leaned against the bus door to catch his breath.

Carrie stood beside him, fidgeting for a long mont before finally speaking in a tiny voice.

"Thank you."

Luke gave a short nod.

"You… you got hurt too, didn't you?"

She'd noticed the healing wounds on his body.

"Just scratches."

"Do you need to go to the hospital?"

"No."

Luke checked the darkening sky. He needed to contact Brando and Lionel soon.

Carrie bit her lip, then finally looked up at him with pleading eyes.

"Mr. Luke… can I ask you for a favor?"
