The night exploded with the thunder of the M60.

"Thump-thump-thump-thump!"

Luke raked the truck with a long, savage burst. Brass casings stread from the weapon while Lionel fed the belt from inside the van. Carrie clapped her hands over her ears, eyes squeezed shut against the deafening roar.

The heavy rounds chewed through the rig like it was made of paper. Windows shattered instantly. Steel panels punched through with fist-sized holes. The bull skull ornant disintegrated in the first second. In under fifteen seconds the entire belt was empty.

Silence crashed back in, broken only by the roar of both engines.

Luke stared at the truck. Most of its body was now a shredded ss of twisted tal, but it was still keeping pace. The wheels never slowed. The engine still growled like nothing had happened.

"You've gotta be kidding ," Brando muttered, glancing over. His excited grin had vanished.

Luke studied the damage. Through the ragged holes he could see engine parts… and sothing else. Wet, glistening flesh pressed against the machinery. Dark red blood began oozing from every bullet hole, thick and slow.

"That thing's alive," Lionel breathed, leaning forward.

Inside the truck, tal groaned and shifted. Cracks in the body glowed with dark red light, like a furnace about to blow.

"Careful!" Luke shouted.

The truck began changing. Its square cab and trailer twisted and expanded. Steel plates slid and re-ford. Flesh and tal fused together into sothing grotesque. Heat rolled off it in waves.

Brando's eyes lit up instead of showing fear. "Is it transforming? Hell yeah—"

"Brando! C4! Now!" Luke roared.

Brando snapped into motion. He jamd his left knee against the steering wheel to hold course, yanked the seat lever, and dropped the seat back flat. With one hand he reached under the seat while his right foot stayed glued to the gas, keeping them locked against the monster.

"Lionel! Black bag under the seat—left side! Move!"

Lionel scrambled, yanked the canvas bag free, and ripped it open. Inside were neat blocks of C4 and detonators.

"Give one—ten-second fuse!"

Brando snatched the block and detonator, jamd them together with practiced speed, thumbed the tir until it read 10, then tossed it back without looking.

Luke caught it.

The truck had finished its transformation. It was no longer a rig. It was a hulking beast of fused flesh and steel, glowing cherry-red from within. The front split open with a tallic screech, revealing a jagged, glowing maw.

"Now!"

Brando spun the wheel hard left and floored it, slamming their van into the monster's side. Luke used the impact to lean farther out the window and hurled the ard C4 straight into the open mouth.

"GO!"

Brando whipped the wheel the other way. The van fishtailed away from the beast.

"Hold on!"

The countdown hit zero.

A blinding white flash lit the highway. The shockwave slamd into the van like a hamr. The rear window exploded inward, showering glass everywhere. Brando fought the wheel through a wild spin before finally bringing them to a shaky stop.

For a second nobody moved.

Brando wiped sweat off his face, breathing hard. "That was fucking aweso."

Luke shoved the door open and stepped out, chainsaw already in hand. He walked toward the burning wreckage without looking back.

Brando and Lionel grabbed their weapons and followed. Carrie hesitated only a mont, then scrambled out and stayed glued to Luke's back.
