Sunday 23 March 1992
Jeremy Harvey, a 24-year-old office worker, had always been fascinated by vampire lore—Dracula, demon hunters, and everything in between. As he strolled past a nearby electronics store, his eyes locked onto a display featuring a sleek gaming console labeled ZEPS. But what truly caught his attention was a ga sitting prominently on the shelf: Castlevania. The mont he saw the artwork depicting a lone warrior against a castle looming in the distance, sothing inside him sparked with excitent. It was the kind of adventure he had always dread of experiencing.
Curious, he approached the store owner. "Hey, what's this ga about?"
The owner smiled knowingly. "It's about a vampire hunter—a Belmont—who fights against Dracula and his minions. It's tough, but if you like a challenge, it's worth every second."
Jeremy's eyes lit up. That was all he needed to hear. Without hesitation, he purchased the ZEPS console along with Castlevania and rushed ho, eager to imrse himself in the world of vampire hunting.
The mont he got ho, he wasted no ti setting up his new console, carefully connecting it to his CRT TV. As he unboxed the ga, he noticed several items inside—a manual, a promotional pamphlet, and sothing that particularly intrigued him: a black and gray Z-card. Curious, he flipped it over and read the cryptic ssage on the back: "Look around the town and you might see ."
Jeremy raised an eyebrow. "Huh? What's this supposed to an? Is it part of the ga? So kind of secret?"
Shrugging it off, he eagerly pressed start, and the screen flickered to life. The title screen displayed the na: Castlevania: Simon's Quest. An 8-bit cinematic play, introducing Simon Belmont, the latest warrior of the legendary Belmont clan, sworn to battle Dracula and his army of darkness. The narration explained that Dracula had awoken once more, spreading terror across the land, and Simon had already fought through hordes of his minions. Now, he was finally ready to face Dracula in his own castle.
As the ga began, Jeremy took a mont to familiarize himself with the controls. Simon Belmont was a bulky figure, wielding a whip as his primary weapon. Moving cautiously, Jeremy guided Simon through the dark, gothic landscapes, taking down skeletons, bats, demons, imps, and restless spirits. The more he played, the more he realized how thodical the combat was—attacking, dodging, and using secondary weapons like daggers, axes, holy water, bombs, and cross boorangs. Every encounter felt deliberate, every attack carrying weight.
"This is amazing!" Jeremy exclaid, fully imrsed in the adventure.
After pushing through the treacherous terrain, he finally arrived at Dracula's castle. A text box appeared as the screen darkened, revealing Dracula standing atop his throne.
"Foolish Belmont, your efforts are futile. I am immortal!" the vampire lord declared.
Simon responded with a simple but resolute text: "Shut up, evil being. I will annihilate you and restore peace!"
With that, the climactic battle began. Jeremy quickly learned that Dracula could only be hard by striking his head, which required precise jumps and careful positioning. The vampire's attacks were relentless, teleporting across the room while hurling fireballs. Jeremy attempted to dodge and counterattack, but after several failed attempts, he was t with the dreaded GA OVER screen.
"Damn it! One more ti!"
Undeterred, he continued his assault on Dracula, adjusting his strategy each ti. He discovered that holy water was particularly effective, but even with this knowledge, the battle remained grueling. After multiple retries, he finally struck the decisive blow, bringing Dracula's health down to zero. But just as he started celebrating, the screen flashed ominously. Dracula's body began to morph, his health bar refilling entirely.
"You've got to be kidding !" Jeremy groaned as Dracula transford into a monstrous demon form.
Unlike before, the second phase of the battle introduced a more aggressive Dracula, leaping unpredictably and attacking with even deadlier strikes. Jeremy clenched his jaw, refusing to let frustration get the best of him. He had co this far—he wasn't about to back down now. With renewed focus, he dodged, countered, and fought relentlessly. It took nearly an hour of determination and countless retries, but finally, with one last whip strike, Dracula let out a final, furious cry.
"CURSE YOU, MORTAL!" Dracula bellowed before vanishing into a swarm of bats.
The screen shifted to an 8-bit cutscene depicting Simon Belmont standing victorious as Dracula's castle crumbled behind him. The words appeared on screen: "Peace is restored... for now."
Jeremy leaned back, satisfied. "That was tough but worth it. Man, what a ga."
However, just as he thought it was over, the screen transitioned again. A new ssage appeared: "But all is not well. Simon Belmont is cursed. The hunt is not over."
Simon, now standing in a town called Jova, was given a new objective: to gather Dracula's scattered remains and lift the curse. Jeremy's jaw dropped. He had thought the ga was over, but in reality, the adventure was just beginning.
"Whoa! So there's even more? I thought this was a short ga! But there's an entire new journey ahead!"
Excitent surged through him as he leaned forward, gripping the controller tightly. There was no way he was stopping now. With renewed determination, Jeremy prepared to continue his quest through Castlevania, eager to uncover what lay ahead. His heart pounded with anticipation as the eerie music continued playing, and the darkness of the adventure still lood before him.
The night was still young, and there were still many monsters to slay.
