Each pole could barely stand one foot on it, with gaps about a ter wide between each, extending to the edge of the high wall of the distant Black Pool, where narrow stairs protruded from the wall.
It seed he needed to tread on these underwater poles, traversing above the bottomless Black Pool water surface, reaching the wall on the far end, then climbing up.
Without the light, he’d essentially be groping in pitch blackness over an abyss, jumping from pole to pole toward an unknown direction.
And beneath him, the poles extended into the black pool, with no visible bottom, and there seed to be sothing moving below.
