Now reading: Interlude Sylverith & Lily from Arcane Chef - Slice of Life x Adventure LitRPG, a Slice of life novel by Srsli.

Sylverith had been napping for several centuries now, or more. She had entrusted the protection of her forest to her favourite child, Lily. Young—perhaps a millennia or two—but she perford the role spectacularly.

So it ca as quite a shock when the bloated oaf, Nemorax of the mountain, interrupted her slumber. He claid they had conspired against him—accusing her of plotting to have his god revoke its blessing and abandon him. Honestly, it sounded like nonsense. And to attack her while she slept?

Unforgivable.

For over a week, they had been fighting. She wasn’t really trying to kill him… but the sa couldn’t be said for Lily. Every ti Nemorax even approached the trees, Lily was there—cutting him from below. For days, he was unable to land, forced to remain in the air, constantly engaged in battle.

He seed weaker now. Perhaps lazier?

It was hard to tell. She hadn’t interacted with him in so long—they had still been whelps back then. But she rembered vividly when he received his blessing, the divine powers that ca with it… how he tried to lord it over the others.

He was ignored.

Sylverith had no interest in becoming the tool of so higher being. She was proud. She was dragon.

And now, she was done humouring his tantrum.

As Nemorax ca in for yet another attack on her lair, she laid an ambush—coordinating with Lily. As he swooped in, Sylverith dove from the clouds, crashing onto his back, her claws sinking into his wings and driving him into the ground.

He was not flexible enough to defend himself. His pathetic lightning—now lacking the power of divinity—was of no use.

The mont he ca within range, the forest itself responded. Lily’s shadows rose up, engulfing him, slicing him again and again. Desperate to escape, Nemorax managed to shake her from his back. But as he tried to take off again, Sylverith got a perfect grip on his tail with her teeth—tearing him back down and ripping off half of it in the process.

That seed to be enough.

Lily moved in again, carving at every exposed weak spot. Nemorax let out an almighty roar—before lifting off again. Hovering.

She thought, for a brief mont, he might find the courage to see this through.

Instead, bleeding profusely, he gave one final roar—pathetic, this ti—and turned north, fleeing into the sky.

Lily appeared beside her, sitting neatly on the forest floor and licking her paw.

“Is that it?” Lily asked.

They had long since developed a thod of communication. Using the ntal talents she had honed ages ago, Sylverith could speak directly to the minds of other creatures—sothing she found rather useful at tis.

“I believe so. He’s badly injured, and another engagent would risk his death. I suspect we won’t see him again for a few centuries at least,” Sylverith said.

Nemorax was many things, but brave was not one of them. It was why she believed he had sought a patron god in the first place.

“What are you doing with the tail?” Lily asked, eyeing it as it lay discarded on the ground.

“I was going to let it feed the soil,” Sylverith replied, glancing at the stumpy thing.

“You could eat it. It’d make a nice snack,” Lily suggested.

“You’ve never liked dragon-kin before. What’s changed?” she asked, curious.

“Found a human child. Makes it taste good,” Lily answered, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

That response made Sylverith stare, stunned. Lily… hated humans.

“What do you an you ‘found a human child’?” she asked, narrowing her gaze at the little shadow cat.

“Don’t know. Haven’t worked it out yet. Was drawn to him. Don’t want to kill him. But every ti I show up, he makes nice snacks,” Lily said cheerily, as if it all made perfect sense.

This was a very unexpected turn of events.

“And this child—where are they now?” she asked.

Lily’s ears twitched. She turned her head southwest.

“That way. That’s the other strange part. I can always sense him.”

“And you had him cook… dragon?” Sylverith asked, genuinely shocked.

“No. It was the lazy one’s mate,” Lily said, now stretching out on the grass, clearly bored of the conversation.

It was starting to make sense now—why Nemorax had attacked, why he was so enraged. But still, this was sothing she needed to investigate for herself.

If anyone had dared place a spell or charm upon Lily, Sylverith would not stand for it.

“Very well. Let’s go see him. This human child you’ve… befriended. I wish to et him. We’ll take the tail,” she said at last.

“Okay! I can lead the way. But it might be best if you stay in the forest. I’ll bring him out. The humans are strange,” Lily replied, already forming from the shadows.

“Why not land directly where the child is?” Sylverith asked, confused. She had no reason to fear humans. They were insects.

“It’s odd, but there’s a group that follows him. They probably like the snacks too. But they seem to protect him. Best not to hurt them,” Lily said, as if pondering sothing of mild interest.

Stranger and stranger. Not only had Lily attached herself to a human, but now there was a whole group of them? Could they have placed a charm powerful enough to influence her guardian?

If they had… there would not be a single human left alive near this forest by sundown.

“Very well. Show ,” Sylverith said.

As she stretched her wings, preparing to take flight, Lily reappeared from the shadows.

“Don’t forget the tail. The boy said it takes three days to prepare,” she said, before sinking away again.

Everything about this was odd. Still, she sensed no magic on Lily. No control, no enchantnt—unless it was hidden beyond her detection. But that would require truly powerful magic… had humans grown that powerful while she slept?

It was a short flight. The boy was nearby, on the western scar—close enough to feel the disturbed mana of the broken land. She glided low, landing deep within the tree line, shrouded in the trees and shadow, and waited for Lily to retrieve him.

No matter how hard she tried, she could not sense anything remotely powerful in the cluster of stone and sticks that made up the hovel in the distance.

Then Lily returned, pushing—quite literally—a human child to the treeline.

What was happening?

This boy looked… weak. Soft. Confused.

And yet, four others followed close behind—clearly protective, but making no moves against Lily.

In the distance, a crowd of humans was forming. They, too, looked fragile… but their numbers gave her pause. Was this so kind of trap?

She didn’t trust it.

She would use an illusion.

Let them speak to the image. She would watch, and wait.

***

The conversation with the boy had not shed any more light on the situation. If anything, it left her with more questions.

He seed terrified of cooking the tail—terrified when she simply told him she’d return in three days. There was no chance soone so weak could be controlling Lily.

So what was going on?

Once she was back in the forest, Lily appeared from the shadows once again.

“Well? What did you think? He had another tasty snack ready for ,” Lily said brightly, tail flicking with contentnt.

“I was worried soone had placed a control over you,” Sylverith admitted, watching the small feline carefully. “But they were too weak. All of them. Very strange.”

She lowered her head, letting her eyes drift closed.

“I will ditate on this. Wake when the boy has the snack ready,” she said at last, before turning and disappearing into her lair once more.

Sothing odd was happening.
