The lead program inspector panicked instantly, as though Death itself was charging straight at him. Without a second thought, he turned and ran.
But Wang Yun was faster, striding after him in huge steps.
The inspector tripped and fell flat on his face. Even so, he desperately wriggled backward, trying to get away. None of his colleagues dared to step forward and help.
Who would dare?
It wasn’t a rescue. It would be a death sentence.
“Hand it over!”
Wang Yun didn’t kill him. Instead, he snatched the walkie-talkie right out of the inspector’s hand.
Bringing it to his mouth, he shouted directly into it, “An earthquake is about to hit the area around the mountain. Evacuate imdiately! The water level is dropping rapidly. Get your people out of here! If you don’t want to die, leave this island now.”
His voice bood through the walkie-talkie.
At that mont, everyone carrying a walkie-talkie was heading toward the river. Hearing that familiar voice suddenly coming through the device, all of them froze. Even the helicopter pilots jolted in surprise.
“Wang Yun?”
The first to respond was Zhao Youcheng, holding his walkie-talkie with a face full of shock.
He hadn’t expected his first conversation with Wang Yun to happen like this—over a walkie-talkie.
“Yes, I’m Wang Yun. You’re the commander, right? Starting now, you have six hours to evacuate. An earthquake is going to hit soon,” Wang Yun said calmly.
He didn’t care about these people, he wasn’t so great altruist. But if he ignored this, the outco would undoubtedly be catastrophic. What’s more, these people had already found them, and the acid rain was monts away from pouring down on Brother Hu and Xiao Gang.
Getting them to retreat now would serve two purposes: saving his own group and protecting them and the local residents.
Zhao Youcheng’s eyes widened as he heard this. He imdiately contacted Alfa, who was stationed at the camp outside the mountain.
“Captain Zhao, don’t believe him. The weather station hasn’t issued any earthquake warnings. This area only had a typhoon, and that’s long gone. He’s just trying to create chaos so he can escape now that we’ve found him!”
Bayim’s voice ca through the walkie-talkie, filled with disdain. His hatred for Wang Yun was as deep as anyone else’s.
After all, because of Wang Yun, their operation involving Xiao Yanran as a hostage had failed miserably. It had cost them dearly, almost wiping out their entire team.
When Bayim finished speaking, Marley chid in as well, “Old Zhao, you can’t trust anything a criminal says. He kidnapped us and promised that if we brought his man, we’d all walk away unhard. But he broke his word, and you saw the result for yourself.”
Marley’s voice was full of bitterness and resentnt. He hated Wang Yun for not keeping his promise.
But Marley seed to have forgotten that Wang Yun wasn’t the one who started the fight. It was Hardy who fired the first shot, provoking him.
Zhao Youcheng stood still, deep in thought. He didn’t fully believe anyone’s words yet and decided to contact Alfa again.
Alfa was quick to act. The mont he heard Wang Yun’s claim, he logged into the internal network of the teorological station to check the latest data.
“Old Zhao, I’m checking the recent forecasts from the teorological station,” Alfa reported.
“What do you see?” Zhao Youcheng asked urgently.
His mind wavered.
On one hand, he doubted Wang Yun’s warning, suspecting it might just be an excuse to escape. On the other hand, Wang Yun’s reasoning about the dropping water level sounded logical and didn’t feel like a lie. If he made the wrong call, catching Wang Yun would be the least of their problems—losing their lives would be far worse.
“I’m on the phone with the local teorological office now. Let double-check. According to the data on the system, there are no signs of any earthquakes in this area.”
After speaking, Alfa continued his call.
Ten seconds later, he hung up.
“Old Zhao, there’s no sign of an earthquake in the surrounding area,” Alfa said quickly. He added, “That said, so earthquakes can’t be detected by teorological stations, but they usually have minimal impact.”
There was no such thing as absolute certainty in their line of work. After all, nature was sothing no one could fully predict.
“Old Zhao, Wang Yun is clearly playing tricks. He sees we’re deploying acid rain and has no way out. He’s just stalling for ti. Don’t let him fool you, Old Zhao,” Hardy’s voice ca through, filled with fury.
Hardy was itching to charge in and tear Wang Yun apart on the spot.
At the sa ti, Wang Yun, holding the walkie-talkie, could hear every word they were saying. His temper flared instantly.
“Idiots! Every single one of you is an idiot!” Wang Yun roared. “If your so-called teorological predictions are so accurate, then why does the world still suffer countless natural disasters? Why aren’t they all avoided in ti? I don’t care if you believe or not. I’ve told you what’s coming. If you don’t listen and people die because of it, you’ll be the ones to bla. You’ll be the criminals responsible for the disaster in Yun City. Negligence that leads to death is still a cri. It’s a real, actual cri.”
Actual cri.
Wang Yun’s final roar left everyone stunned. Even the helicopters overhead paused, halting their acid rain deploynt.
For a mont, no one knew what to do.
