Wednesday afternoon, Howard enters the shop holding hands with a tiny woman.
"Everyone, this is Bernadette."
She's maybe five feet tall. Blonde, pretty, sweet smile. Looks like she wouldn't hurt a fly.
"Hi!" Voice is high-pitched, almost cartoon-like. "Howard's told so much about you guys."
"All lies," Raj imdiately responds. "We're actually cool."
She laughs. Genuine, not forced.
Howard's nervous. Actually nervous. Fidgeting with his belt buckle, glancing between her and us, waiting for approval.
"Bernadette's a microbiologist," he explains. "We work at the sa facility. She's—"
"Howard." Her voice drops an octave. "I can introduce myself."
He shuts up imdiately.
Sheldon's eyebrow rises. Leonard grins. I hide my smile behind the register.
"I work in pathogen research," Bernadette continues, voice back to sweet. "Howard ntioned you guys hang out here Wednesdays. Wanted to et the famous gang."
"Famous?" Leonard asks.
"He talks about you constantly. Stuart's business advice. Sheldon's physics expertise. Raj's cultural insights. You're like his second family."
Howard's blushing. Actually blushing.
"Want a tour?" I offer. "It's a comic shop. Won't take long."
"I'd love that."
She asks intelligent questions.
Not fake interest—actual curiosity about the business model, inventory managent, how I source collectibles.
"My brother collected comics growing up. I know how valuable so of these are."
"You read any yourself?" Raj asks hopefully.
"Not really my thing. But I appreciate the art." She examines a Wonder Woman display. "This is gorgeous. Who's the artist?"
"George Perez. Want to see more of his work?"
For ten minutes, Raj gives her an impromptu art history lesson. She listens, asks follow-up questions, treats him like an expert.
Howard watches with barely contained hope.
I pull him aside while Bernadette and Raj discuss comic panels.
"She's great."
"I know. Right? She's—Stuart, she's perfect."
"How long have you been dating?"
"Three weeks. Three weeks of not being creepy. Not making gross jokes. Actually listening to her. Your coaching worked."
"You did the work, Howard."
"After you showed how. I would've blown this otherwise."
Bernadette finishes with Raj, joins Sheldon who's explaining string theory using comic book taphors. She actually follows along, adding comnts about molecular biology parallels.
"She has a PhD," Howard ntions. "Smarter than all of us."
"Good. You need soone who can keep up."
"She keeps in check. When I slip into old habits, she just—" He demonstrates her voice dropping. "—shuts it down. I love it."
Leonard appears beside us. "You found soone who makes you better. That's—Howard, that's exactly right."
"I know."
"Don't screw this up."
"Wasn't planning on it."
Bernadette returns, slips her hand into Howard's. "This place is great. I get why you guys love it here."
"It's our headquarters," Raj explains. "Command center for all geek activities."
"Also Stuart's business," Sheldon adds. "Which statistically shouldn't have succeeded but did."
"Thanks, Sheldon."
"It's rely data."
Bernadette smiles at . "Howard says you gave him dating advice. Taught him how to actually talk to won."
"He's exaggerating."
"No, he's not." She squeezes Howard's hand. "Whatever you did, thank you. This guy—" She looks at Howard with genuine affection. "—is pretty special when he's being himself."
Howard's going to cry.
Leonard definitely looks jealous.
And I feel—proud? Satisfied? Like watching a student succeed.
My coaching worked. Howard found soone real. Built a relationship on actual connection instead of pickup artistry.
Maybe the powers help friends too. Maybe the success aura radiates outward.
Or maybe Howard just needed soone to tell him he was good enough without the jokes.
After they leave, the gang processes.
"She's perfect," Raj declares.
"Agreed," Leonard adds. "Perfect for him. Smart, funny, keeps him grounded."
"Their compatibility coefficient exceeds typical relationship paraters," Sheldon calculates. "Probability of long-term success: seventy-three percent."
"That's good?"
"That's excellent. Most relationships score below forty percent."
We return to normal Wednesday routines. Comics sorted, bags filed, conversations flowing.
But sothing's shifted.
Howard found soone. Built sothing real. The gang's evolving.
My phone buzzes.
Penny: Thanks again for this morning. Feeling better. Let's do coffee again soti?
I stare at the ssage.
Coffee. Just coffee. Between friends.
Except that hug this morning felt like more than friends.
And Leonard's text earlier suggested he noticed.
This could get ssy.
But Penny's asking. Friendly, casual, normal.
: Sure. Anyti.
I close my phone before overthinking it.
Howard found soone. Grew into a better version of himself. Proved that change is possible.
Maybe I can navigate complicated feelings without destroying friendships.
Maybe being attracted to Penny doesn't an anything has to happen.
Maybe I can just—
My phone buzzes again.
Leonard: Bernadette seems great. Howard's lucky. We should all hang out more.
: Definitely. She's good for him.
Leonard: Did Penny text you?
The question hangs.
: Yeah. Just thanking for earlier.
Leonard: Cool. Just checking.
He's not just checking.
He's monitoring.
And I'm—what? Interested in his crush? Drawn to soone I shouldn't be?
This is getting complicated fast.
I close the shop at seven, drive ho thinking about Howard's success and Penny's hug and Leonard's worried texts.
The empire's growing. Two shops profitable. Investnts compounding.
But the personal life is a minefield.
And I'm walking straight into it.
