Half a year passed in the blink of an eye.
During that ti, Kahn's main task was studying spiritbending, hoping to gain enough ability as quickly as possible to find the Mother of Faces and, through her, locate Ursa.
Even so, because he occasionally had to carry out Ozai's missions, his interrupted studies still took half a year.
After deciding on their strategy against Ozai, they had more to consider during each mission.
Not only did they work hard to expand their own influence, but they occasionally selected certain "talents" for Ozai as well, just as Azula had done with Yudan.
As for those who could not be used by them and were certain to beco enemies in the future, they suppressed them without hesitation, crushing the threat before it could grow.
In addition, after Mai and Ty Lee joined their mission team, the missions beca increasingly easy.
Kahn could even slack off occasionally during assignnts and use the ti to continue practicing spiritbending.
East, South, West, and North had also grown accustod to the colorful life of the human world.
They expressed their willingness to stay by Kahn's side, declaring that they had completely beco his spirit companions.
There was nothing much to say about Iroh and Zuko's journey to find the Avatar.
So far, they had found nothing and were still wandering.
However, according to Zuko, he had gained a great deal over the years and had spent more ti thinking.
Only then did he realize how naive his previous thoughts had been.
Moreover, perhaps influenced by Iroh, he had also beco opposed to the war, believing that the Fire Nation's current actions were extrely dangerous and that many of Ozai's decisions were unquestionably wrong.
Kahn neither agreed nor disagreed, rely sighing that he had not expected Zuko to change so much.
It seed traveling through the world really was necessary.
He wanted to travel too.
Returning to the main point, after half a year of training, Kahn had gained a great deal in the practical use of spiritbending.
As a ans for humans to communicate with spirits, spiritbending did not have many complicated abilities, but each one was powerful.
For example, speaking with animals.
Although most animals lacked the intelligence for rational thought and true communication, they were far more sensitive than humans to signs of impending danger.
Because of that, one could learn from them where disaster might occur and avoid it in ti.
Of course, that was rely the original intention of the ancient people who developed the ability.
How it was used ultimately depended on the individual.
Another example was the mind-to-mind communication Guru Pathik had once used on him.
Unfortunately, the range of that ability was not large.
Otherwise, Kahn would have asked Guru Pathik to teach him remotely with it, which would have been extrely convenient.
As for the ability Kahn coveted most—the ability to directly see through people's hearts—that was a high-level application that could only be mastered after opening the Seven Chakras.
For now, he could only dream of it.
His ntal training was also proceeding in an orderly manner, though many problems had appeared during the process.
For example, the search for Ursa's whereabouts had sohow beco an obsession of his, turning into an obstacle.
But thinking about it carefully, that made sense.
He had been pursuing this matter for so many years, and now that everything had reached its most critical mont, it was impossible for him not to care.
According to his own speculation, once Ursa's whereabouts were found and the truth of what happened back then was revealed, he might be able to attempt the trial of opening the Seven Chakras.
Of course, the most important thing was that Kahn had finally learned how to find the Mother of Faces.
That ant the search for Ursa could finally begin again.
There was no need for further words.
He set out imdiately.
Sitting on Four Directions' back as they flew toward the Valley of No Return, Kahn rembered that the journey had taken five or six full days back then.
Now, it took less than one.
The comparison left him feeling a little emotional.
As he flew over the town of Hira'a, Kahn rembered Noren and Noriko, the couple who had warmly welcod him, as well as little Kiyi, who could be considered half his disciple.
They were a very happy family.
Originally, he planned to stop for a brief visit.
But after so consideration, he decided completing the mission ca first.
It would not be too late to visit them after everything was over.
When he arrived at the Valley of No Return, it was as peaceful as ever.
But compared to when he had been a spiritbending novice, he could now see far more of the forest's unusual nature.
The Mother of Faces' three lakes were filled with dense spiritual energy, and the energy that overflowed from them had seeped into the entire forest year after year.
The place seed to have taken on faint qualities of the Spirit World.
Back then, he had strictly followed Iroh's teachings, entering with reverence and goodwill.
All along the way, he had felt only peace and had encountered no abnormalities.
But if soone entered this forest with malice, all the plants and animals within it would imdiately beco frenzied, restless, and aggressive.
They would not stop until the intruder was killed or driven out.
Kahn had never harbored ill will from beginning to end.
But that did not stop him from gleefully guessing that perhaps Ozai had once sent people here to investigate, only for them to be battered and driven out with nothing to show for it.
After entering the forest, he unexpectedly saw Misu and her brother Rafa again.
Rafa's injury had still not healed, and he continued to wear a mask.
Kahn asked in surprise,
"You still haven't t the Mother of Faces?"
Misu shook her head and smiled bitterly.
"Our luck has always been terrible."
"I'm already used to it."
"But, Kahn, long ti no see."
"Mm."
"Misu, Rafa, long ti no see."
The two smiled at each other, rekindling their small friendship.
Misu invited Kahn to their camp once again.
This ti, they had moved their camp to another lake.
Misu told him about what they had experienced after he left.
Just as Misu herself had said, their luck was truly awful.
From the ti they arrived here until this second eting with Kahn, they had experienced five appearances of the Mother of Faces.
Each ti, they had chosen the wrong lake to wait beside.
The Mother of Faces appeared at one of three lakes.
That ant a one-in-three chance.
It was not high, but it was not terribly low either.
To choose wrong five tis in a row out of three possibilities—one could only say their luck really was poor.
They were now waiting for their sixth chance.
"Kahn, you ca at just the right ti."
"The Mother of Faces hasn't appeared this season yet."
"You can wait with us."
"That way, at least one of us is sure to et her."
Misu was glad Kahn had not missed the opportunity.
At the sa ti, she was happy to have a friend accompany them for the coming days.
Although she was used to living alone with her brother, that did not an she did not long for friendship.
Kahn shook his head and smiled mysteriously.
"I still don't have much ti to wait this ti."
"But I've already prepared another thod."
It seed this operation could help him learn Ursa's whereabouts while also helping the siblings.
Two birds with one stone.
Not bad.
Under Misu's puzzled and curious gaze, Kahn sat cross-legged at the edge of the lake and
