Now reading: Chapter 7: Cheating? from Avatar: Rebirth of the Strongest Firebender, a Action novel by Shadowdemon007.

Because Zuko had just ntioned combat practice, Kahn's mind spun quickly.

He thought maybe he could use this sparring session to let the two siblings fight it out—perhaps their conflict would ease during the match, and afterward, they'd beco a more harmonious family.

At least then, he wouldn't have to worry about getting caught in the crossfire between the two of them.

As for whether it would actually work… he wasn't sure. But hey, that's how it always played out in comics.

Combat practice originated from dueling in the Fire Nation. The Fire Nation valued martial prowess, and duels were a common ans to settle disputes.

Over ti, the practice evolved into friendly combat training—a way to sharpen one's skills without the animosity of a true duel.

Well, usually.

Right now, Azula didn't look like she was here for practice.

"Who's first!"

Azula leaped onto the training platform, hands on her hips, eyes scanning Kahn and Zuko like a predator choosing its next al.

"Maybe you two can co at together. I don't mind."

So arrogant at such a young age?

Kahn turned to Zuko. "Is she strong?"

"Very strong. I've never beaten her," Zuko admitted, looking frustrated. He and Azula had started training at the sa ti under the sa teacher, but her progress had been terrifyingly fast.

His father often scolded him for lacking talent—completely unworthy of royal blood.

That was also why he hadn't wanted Azula involved; against her, they didn't stand a chance. She'd only humiliate them.

Especially now that she'd even defeated their previous Firebending instructor and started training directly under the Fire Lord himself.

Kahn blinked. Defeated an adult elite Firebender?

"Oh. Never mind."

He instantly dropped the thought of "teaching her a lesson." But still, he encouraged Zuko, saying, "Isn't this a good chance? Win or lose, if you fight her properly, your relationship might change."

"Really?"

Zuko frowned, half-convinced by Kahn's sincerity.

Maybe Kahn isn't lying after all…

anwhile, Azula smirked. "What's the matter, Zuzu? Scared already? Want to run back to Mother's arms? I'm not as strong as you think. If you beg, I might even let you use one hand. How about that?"

Highly effective.

Zuko's face turned crimson. He was just about to rush onto the stage when Kahn grabbed his shoulder. "Wait."

Running in blindly was just asking for a beating.

Though Kahn had stirred this up, he wasn't so cruel as to let the kid walk into a trap.

"Before we start," Kahn said, "let's agree on the rules."

He turned to Azula. "No heavy hits. Stop when contact's made. Stepping out of bounds or surrendering ans a loss. If anyone calls for a stop, both sides imdiately stand down."

"I agree," Azula said lightly.

Zuko tilted his head. "Aren't those the usual rules? Why say them again?"

Azula sighed dramatically. "Please don't ask such stupid questions again, Zuzu. I'm honestly embarrassed to share blood with you."

In truth, if Kahn hadn't stated the rules explicitly, she might've "forgotten" them later and taken full advantage.

By laying them out in front of everyone, he'd just closed that loophole.

Azula noticed that, and despite herself, a faint, curious smile crossed her lips.

This boy was different.

That feeling of irritation—no, interest—rose again, but vanished as quickly as it ca.

She smirked. "Fine. I'm in a good mood today. I'll just beat you both up a little. I accept your rules."

You're really arrogant, little girl, Kahn thought, ntally kicking her in the face. Still, it oddly lightened his mood.

If nothing else, Azula's intelligence stood out. Maybe all royal kids were trained this way from birth—but looking at Zuko, that clearly wasn't the case.

So, she was naturally gifted. Just… in a terrifyingly smug way.

Once the rules were confird, they decided the match order by rock-paper-scissors.

First match: Kahn vs. Zuko.

Second match: Zuko vs. Azula.

Third match: Azula vs. Kahn.

Kahn and Zuko stepped onto the platform.

"How about we only use the moves you've learned?" Zuko suggested, trying to be considerate.

"Thanks, but no need," Kahn replied with a small smile. Zuko really was a good kid.

Then he added, "Don't underestimate . You're the one who should be careful."

Careful? Of what?

Zuko's curiosity flared as they both removed their heavy outer robes, standing in their training garnts.

They bumped fists in mutual respect, took five paces apart, and counted down.

"Three, two… one!"

Begin!

Both turned at once, launching twin fireballs that collided midair—two blazing tails eting in an explosive burst that filled the space with fire and smoke.

Zuko used the brief cover to surge forward, punching straight through the flas—

—but hit nothing.

Before he could even look around, a burst of searing heat rose beneath him.

Not good!

He threw himself backward, narrowly dodging Kahn's upward kick, tumbling twice before regaining balance.

Barely.

Kahn didn't press the attack. Instead, he smiled. "Only this once."

Zuko's cheeks burned. Kahn had gone easy on him—otherwise, he'd already have been down for the count.

Still stunned, he asked, "Kahn, how did you know I'd attack like that?"

Kahn thought for a mont. "Prediction… and a bit of intuition."

In truth, he hadn't thought—his body had simply moved. Reflex. Like he'd rehearsed it a hundred tis before.

It was a talent he'd recently discovered: his reaction speed was incredible. And now, it felt even more potent than he'd imagined.

Is this my golden finger?

Excitent sparked in his chest as he grinned.

"Let's continue."
