The day ca... and passed as darkness swallowed the sky.

The Academy grounds were quiet after midnight. Most students were asleep, and the patrol routes—consisting of faculty mbers and senior council students—followed predictable patterns.

Alaric had spent the past week morizing those patterns.

He t Nyra in a shadowed alcove near the eastern maintenance corridor. She wore dark clothing instead of her usual maid uniform, her midnight blue hair tied back tightly.

"Ready?" he asked quietly.

She nodded. "The patrol passed three minutes ago. We have approximately twelve minutes before the next one."

"That should be enough."

They moved through the corridor with practiced silence.

Alaric had studied the path earlier, which floorboards creaked, where essence lamps were brightest, what angles provided the most cover.

The maintenance door Henry had used stood locked and unremarkable among several others.

Nyra knelt beside it, examining the chanism. "Standard Academy lock. Essence-keyed to authorized personnel."

"Can you bypass it?"

"Give a mont."

Her hands moved with precise efficiency, shadows gathering at her fingertips, not obviously magical, just subtle manipulation that wouldn’t trigger the Academy’s wards. She pressed her palm against the lock chanism.

The shadows seeped into the keyhole, probing, testing, finding the internal structure.

Click!

The lock disengaged.

"Done," Nyra whispered. "But once we’re inside, we have maybe eight minutes before soone notices the essence signature disturbance."

"Understood."

They slipped inside, closing the door behind them.

The room was larger than expected, not just a storage closet but a proper utility room. Shelves lined the walls, filled with maintenance supplies, spare parts, cleaning materials. Everything labeled and organized.

"What are we looking for?" Nyra asked, already moving to search the left side.

"Anything that doesn’t belong. Items that aren’t standard supplies. Hidden compartnts." Alaric moved to the right, scanning shelves thodically.

Standard tools. Expected materials. Nothing suspicious on first glance.

He pulled aside boxes, checked behind stacks of supplies. Nyra did the sa on her side, moving with quiet efficiency.

Three minutes in, Alaric found sothing.

Behind a row of replacent essence crystals, tucked into a corner was a small wooden box that didn’t match the Academy’s standard storage containers.

He pulled it out carefully. No lock. Just a simple clasp.

Inside were small vials of liquid, each labeled with what looked like student ID numbers. Five vials total, contents shimring faintly with essence residue.

"Nyra. Look at this."

She ca over, examining the vials. Her expression tightened. "Those are essence samples. Collected from—"

Then suddenly a sound outside the door echoed.

Footsteps!

There were multiple sets. Moving with purpose, not the casual pace of a patrol.

Nyra’s eyes widened fractionally. "They know we’re here."

"How?" Alaric hissed, already moving to return the box to its hiding spot.

"The essence disturbance from opening the lock, soone must have been monitoring for it."

The footsteps were getting closer. Voices now, low and urgent.

"Definitely this room!"

"Could be maintenance staff!"

"At this hour? Check it—!"

Alaric re-placed the box, made sure it looked undisturbed. Nyra was already at the door, listening.

"Three people," she whispered. "One is Henry. The others I don’t recognize."

"Can we get past them?"

"Not without being seen." Nyra looked around the room rapidly, assessing options. "There’s a ventilation grate. Upper corner. Too small for you, but I could—"

"No. We leave together or not at all."

The door handle rattled. Soone testing it.

"It’s unlocked," a voice said. "I locked it earlier. Soone’s been inside."

Shit!

Before Alaric could do anything, Nyra grabbed his arm.

"Now."

Darkness erupted around them, wrapping them both in tangible shadow that bent light and essence signatures.

The door opened.

Henry entered first, followed by two others, both wearing Academy staff uniforms. One was Thomas Verne from administration. The other was unfamiliar, but sothing about his movents suggested he was from combat training.

They moved into the room carefully, lamps brightening in their hands.

Alaric and Nyra stood pressed against the wall, wrapped in shadow, barely breathing.

Henry went directly to where the box was hidden. Pulled it out. Checked the contents.

"Nothing’s missing," he said.

"Are you sure soone was in here?" Thomas asked, scanning the room. "The lock could have malfunctioned."

"Essence locks don’t malfunction. They’re bypassed." Henry’s voice was hard. "Soone with skill got in here. Recently."

The third man, moved through the room systematically. His eyes swept every corner, every shadow.

His gaze passed over where Alaric and Nyra hid.

Hesitated.

He took a step closer, essence gathering at his fingertips, preparing to—

"Found sothing," Thomas called from the other side of the room. He held up a small piece of torn fabric. "Caught on one of the shelf edges. Looks like uniform material."

The combat-trained man’s attention shifted. He moved to examine the fabric.

Henry swore under his breath. "Academy uniform. Could be maintenance staff, but..."

"We need to report this," Thomas said. "If students are breaking into restricted areas—"

"No." Henry’s voice was firm. "We handle this ourselves. Quietly. The last thing we need is Academy security getting curious about what we’re storing here."

"Then what do you suggest?"

"Increased monitoring. Change the lock configuration. Move the sensitive materials to the secondary location." Henry replaced the box carefully. "And we watch for anyone showing unusual interest in this area."

The three of them continued discussing logistics, their voices lowering.

Nyra’s grip on Alaric’s arm tightened. Her shadows were holding, but maintaining this level of concealnt was clearly taxing. He could feel her breathing becoming more labored.

We need to leave. Now.

But the three n showed no signs of exiting anyti soon. They were conducting a full inventory, checking everything.

Five minutes passed. Nyra’s shadows flickered slightly.

Ten minutes. Her hand was trembling.

Alaric made a decision. He couldn’t let her exhaust herself completely, if the shadows dropped while they were still here, they’d be caught with no escape.

He leaned close to her ear, barely breathing the words. "Can you get us out?"

She nodded once.

"Do it."

The shadows around them shifted. Instead of holding them in place, they began moving, carrying them along the wall, inch by inch, toward the door that stood slightly ajar.

The three n continued their inspection, backs turned, focused on the far shelves.

Nyra guided them through the doorway, into the corridor.

The mont they cleared the threshold, she released the shadow manipulation.

And they ran.

Silent, controlled, but fast. Down the corridor, around the corner, putting distance between themselves and that room.

Behind them, voices raised in alarm. "Thought I heard sothing."

"Check the corridor!"

They didn’t stop. Nyra led them through a series of turns, taking a route that avoided the main passages. Ergency stairs, service hallways, areas most students didn’t know existed.

Finally, they erged near the Silver Crown dormitory’s rear entrance.

Only then did they slow, catching their breath.

Nyra leaned against the wall, visibly exhausted. Her face was pale, hands still trembling slightly.

"Are you alright?" Alaric asked.

"Fine. Just... that level of concealnt is draining." She took a slow breath. "But we made it out."

"Barely." Alaric looked back the way they’d co. "They’ll increase security now. Change locks. Move whatever they’re hiding."

"Which ans we won’t get another chance to investigate that location."

"No. We won’t." Frustration tightened his jaw. "We were so close."

"But not close enough." Nyra straightened. "What now?"

Alaric was quiet for a mont, thinking.

"We adapt. They’re moving things to a ’secondary location,’ we need to find out where. And that fabric Thomas found? It wasn’t from either of us. Soone else has been investigating too."

"Or they planted it as misdirection."

"Possible." Alaric started toward the dormitory entrance. "Either way, we need a new approach. Direct infiltration is too risky now that they’re alert."

They entered the building through the service entrance, making their way to their respective quarters without being seen by other students.

At the stairwell where they’d part ways, Alaric paused.

"That shadow manipulation. That’s not sothing ordinary."

"No," she agreed quietly. "It’s not."

"Are you going to tell what you really are?"

"Eventually. When it’s relevant." Her violet eyes t his. "But not tonight. Tonight, we both need rest."

He studied her for a mont longer, then nodded. "Alright. We’ll debrief properly tomorrow."

She bowed slightly and descended to the ground floor.

Alaric climbed to his room, his mind already working through what they’d learned and what they’d failed to achieve.

The vials with student ID numbers. Essence samples. Being stored and hidden by infiltrators within the Academy staff.

Soone is collecting student essence. For what purpose?

And now those people knew they were being watched. Would be more careful. Harder to track.

He’d gained information but lost his advantage.

Not a complete failure. But not the success he’d hoped for.

He sat at his desk, pulling out parchnt, beginning to docunt everything while it was fresh in mory.

Tomorrow, he’d figure out the next move.

Tonight, he’d analyze what they had.

And hope it was enough to stay ahead of whatever ga was being played around him.

Because one thing was clear, this went deeper than student politics or Academy intrigue.

Soone was conducting an operation right under the faculty’s nose.
