The issue with Qi Fengping settled just like that, mindful of the strange looks from the villagers, she shut herself indoors. For her to miscarry at such a late stage was akin to giving birth, causing great harm to her body, and she had to undergo a confinent period.
Once it was resolved, Qi Taiguo returned to his military unit after canceling his leave, but no one knew that he made another trip to Tong County before leaving.
As for Qi Fenglian, who was just a worker and had already taken enough leave, she couldn’t stay any longer and returned to Qing City to work.
Cheng Su decided to stay for a few more days to help out.
With what happened to Qi Fengping, Mother Qi was exhausted, having to care for the confinent, manage household affairs, and take care of Xiao Bao, all of which beca overwhelming., and Cheng Su stayed behind to help for a few days, until it was ti for Qi Jianguo to head to Guangcheng, and they would go back together.
With Cheng Su around, even if she was just helping with making chicken soup or cooking, Mother Qi felt much more at ease and grew quite fond of Cheng Su. Thinking that she was also preparing to have a child, whenever she made chicken soup for Qi Fengping, she would reserve a big bowl for Cheng Su.
"Take this opportunity to nourish yourself a bit, improve your health, and you’ll give birth to a chubby son in the future!" Mother Qi said.
Cheng Su felt helpless but didn’t refuse, simply finishing the soup thoroughly.
Rumors about Qi Fengping’s incident were still circulating. At first, when Mother Qi heard them, she’d get furious and argue back. But after a while, upon hearing more, she just kept a cold face and said nothing. Slowly, people felt embarrassed to talk about it, at most mumbling a word or two when bored in private.
"They say kind words warm you in winter, harsh words chill you in June; I’ve really learned this. People can’t stand seeing you well; when they see trouble in your family, they’re happier than anyone, saying the nastiest things they can!" Mother Qi rarely confided in Cheng Su, missing her sharpness from a few days ago.
Cheng Su replied, "It’s good that you know, it’s only in tis like these that you see who’s good or bad. When you are down, it’s easy for others to kick you, but finding soone to help you during tough tis is hard. If they’re good, they’d only offer comfort."
Mother Qi seed to have an epiphany and, after coming back to her senses, asked with pursed lips, "How is she?"
Since coming back from the hospital, Qi Fengping barely went out, didn’t talk much, and seed lost in thought.
"Still the sa," Cheng Su said. "Over ti, she’ll eventually get better."
Mother Qi sighed, "This pitiful girl, truly causing trouble." She looked at Cheng Su, who had her head down, seeming a bit embarrassed, and said, "You’re good with words, try to comfort her more."
Cheng Su was surprised and looked at her mother-in-law, who awkwardly turned away.
Cheng Su chuckled, as it was alti, she brought the soup to Qi Fengping’s room, intending to chat, but Qi Fengping spoke first.
"Zhou Qiang got divorced!"
Cheng Su was taken aback and looked over.
"His wife—no, it should be his ex-wife—called today. I don’t know how she found . She said when their family learned that my brother was a deputy battalion commander, they changed their attitude and wanted to divorce. You say, how could I have ever liked soone like that?" Qi Fengping sneered and added, "Unfortunately, the Zhou family wanted to latch onto us but failed, so they went back to begging his ex-wife’s family, and in the end, they didn’t want him and got divorced! Of course, who would want such scum?"
"That just proves he’s not worth it. Just forget about him, focus on getting your health back in shape, and handle things later," Cheng Su advised.
Qi Fengping looked at her, "Sister-in-law, I want to retake the college entrance exam this year. Can you help talk to the family?"
Cheng Su was taken aback; her eyes were shining brightly, sowhat lacking her past arrogance, but with an indefinable glow.
