Qi Taiguo, who was being nagged by Mother Cheng, had just encountered a life-or-death battle. At this mont, he was struggling to carry a man up a utility pole.
"Get up, go to the roof next to us." Qi Taiguo urged in a deep voice, while being careful not to let his leg touch the water.
Why was this happening?
Just as the rescue was underway, a flash flood suddenly erupted from a distance. The water surface, already a small ocean, rose imdiately, and so of the already precarious utility poles were washed down.
Qi Taiguo saw with his own eyes a utility pole several ters away from them, tilting, with its electric wire sparking, like a snake leaping in midair, about to fall.
What would happen if a wire sparking with electricity fell into the water? The thought of that scenario filled Qi Taiguo with dread, more than he had felt when facing bullets.
He urgently called for people to escape the water surface quickly. On his side, he first dragged Professor Zhong onto a utility pole, while keeping an eye on that electric snake. At the critical mont, his foot left the water surface just as that wire fell into the water.
He saw a dog electrocuted in the water without even a yelp, saw many fish flipping their white bellies and floating to the surface, and, in the distance, saw a person, after letting out a horrific scream, float to the surface...
Qi Taiguo retracted his gaze and urged Professor Zhong to climb up. It was a small two-story building, with people already on the roof.
With the assistance of people pulling and dragging, Professor Zhong reached the rooftop. Qi Taiguo imdiately felt relieved and quickly leapt up to stand on the rooftop.
Professor Zhong, his hair white, slumped on the roof, gasping heavily— nearly unable to breathe.
He lifted his head and looked at his rescuer, who had his back turned, gazing at the watery expanse below.
Professor Zhong also looked over, swallowing hard. He almost ended up like the creatures floating on the water, becoming a lifeless thing.
Seeing the tragic scene before them, soone began to cry.
Qi Taiguo listened to the sobbing in his ear and slightly closed his eyes. Humans are always so small and insignificant in the face of nature’s might.
He quietly mourned for a mont before opening his eyes, turning around, kneeling down on one leg, and asking Professor Zhong if he felt any discomfort.
Seeing him shake his head, Qi Taiguo nodded before walking to the side, holding his intercom, and began calling his teammates to report the location and current situation.
"The target is safe and can evacuate at any ti." Qi Taiguo spoke into the intercom, then turned to look at the others watching him eagerly, and continued, "There are still a few civilians here; please send boats to pick them up."
After turning off the intercom, Qi Taiguo looked back at the waters. The massive flood had tilted the houses, and many pieces of furniture and debris floated on the surface.
The terrifying rescue just now, along with the bodies floating not far away, reminded him of the harsh reality.
As the sky gradually darkened and raindrops began to fall again, Qi Taiguo suddenly heard a cry of alarm. Turning to look, he saw Professor Zhong had collapsed on the ground, trembling violently.
Qi Taiguo quickly knelt down beside him, noticed his pale face and teeth chattering, and reached out to feel.
So hot!
"Blood!" soone shouted, pointing at his leg.
Qi Taiguo looked over and saw the calf of his leg, the pants already torn to shreds. He ripped it open, revealing a large section of flesh missing from his leg, bones visible.
"Damn!" Qi Taiguo imdiately took off his vest, used it to cover the wound, and wrapped the torn pants around it. They needed to leave quickly, or there would be trouble.
