When Feng Lan saw her son crying, her eyes imdiately flew wide. She slamd the sunflower seeds in her hand onto the coffee table with a SLAM and rushed to her son’s side, pulling him into her arms.
She looked up and started screaming at Qin Jiao, "Qin Jiu, you damn girl! How dare you hit Xiao Tao!"
"I was tempted to hit him, but I didn’t. Auntie, Xiao Tao is stealing. If you don’t discipline him for that, aren’t you worried he’ll end up in prison when he’s older?"
"Nonsense! What did he steal?"
Qin Jiao folded her arms, her tone calm. "He stole our aunt’s watch."
Hearing this, the nearby Qin Na suddenly rembered sothing. She quickly took a few steps forward and, just as she’d suspected, saw the watch clutched tightly in Xiao Tao’s hand.
Qin Na had always been envious of people who owned a watch. Back when she lived with her in-laws, her mother-in-law and husband would never have bought one for her. It was only after she started working for her second brother and his wife, earning a monthly salary, that she finally saved up enough to bring herself to buy one.
She treasured it dearly, always putting it away carefully when she worked. She never imagined that little brat would just take it.
Xiao Tao was in the middle of a tantrum. The more Feng Lan tried to soothe him, the harder he cried.
Finally, he just flung the watch from his hand, throwing it away from them.
"My watch!" Qin Na cried out, reaching for it. But she couldn’t catch it in ti, and the watch went flying.
Qin Jiao reacted faster. She rushed over, picked up the watch, and imdiately pried the battery out from the back with her fingernail. Then, she said coolly, "Auntie, he broke your watch."
Qin Na’s eyes reddened. She clutched the watch, her body trembling.
Feng Lan, however, imdiately piped up, "The watch isn’t in our hands anymore! Don’t you dare accuse us of stealing, and don’t even think about making us compensate you!"
Qin Na was furious. ’I’ve never t such unreasonable people!’
She said, "Sister-in-law, you have to pay back for this watch!"
"Why should I pay you!" Feng Lan knew the watch must have cost more than ten yuan and certainly wasn’t cheap, but she had no intention of paying.
’I wouldn’t pay even if I had the money!’
Qin Jiqun felt the sa way. He ca over and, pulling rank as her older brother, said, "Xiao Na, don’t be so unforgiving. Xiao Tao didn’t do it on purpose. He’s just a kid, what does he know?"
"Exactly!" Feng Lan added, hugging her son.
Shielded by his parents, Xiao Tao even made a face at Qin Na, showing no remorse whatsoever.
Qin Na was so angry she started to cry.
Qin Jiao spoke up. "Auntie, this watch is very expensive. You have to pay for it. If you don’t, we’ll have to take you to the police station."
Feng Lan’s eyes bulged. "The police station? What for?! We’re all family here! Besides, Xiao Tao didn’t do it on purpose!"
"First he stole it, then he destroyed it. However, given his young age, the legal responsibility falls to his legal guardians."
Qin Jiqun and Feng Lan didn’t know the first thing about the law, so they were a bit stunned to hear that.
At this mont, Qin Bogang was about to say sothing. He didn’t want relations between the brothers to beco so strained. If they really involved the police, it would be even more humiliating!
Just as he was about to speak, his second brother, Qin Zhonghui, who was sitting beside him, gave him a tug.
