THE HOUSE WAS SMALL.
That was the first thing. Not a property, not an estate, not a fortress with security rotations and reinforced periters.
A house.
Stone-built, low, sitting on a coastal promontory above water that was black and silver in the pre-dawn light, the nearest neighbor a lighthouse whose beam swept the water half a kiloter out with the unhurried rhythm of sothing that had been doing this for a hundred years.
The sea moved below the promontory with a deep, rhythmic authority. Spray caught the lighthouse beam occasionally, a brief silver flash before the dark resud.
Mailah stood on the stairs and looked at it.
"This isn’t yours," she said.
"It is," Grayson said, from behind her.
"It’s — small."
"Yes."
"You own small things?"
"Apparently." He ca to stand beside her on the stairs, looking at the house with the expression he wore when he was assessing sothing and had already reached a conclusion. "From what I deduced, I bought it seven years ago. I have never been here."
She turned to look at him. "Never."
"The deed iI found is in my na. I have no mory of the purchase or the intention behind it." His jaw shifted. "I found the paperwork last week when I was looking for sothing else."
Mailah looked back at the house. Small and stone and sitting above black water at four in the morning, with no security periter and no staff and the nearest neighbor a lighthouse.
The absolute antithesis of every Ashford property she had ever seen or heard described.
She thought about a version of Grayson that had bought this — the version that had been changed by exile, by years of living among humans, by sothing in his architecture that had shifted without his permission and had apparently started making real estate decisions on the basis of that shift.
A house with no tactical value whatsoever.
A house above the sea.
She walked down the remaining stairs toward the door.
He followed, pulling a key from his jacket pocket — a physical key, which she hadn’t known he owned — and unlocked the door with the ease of soone who had done it before. Except he hadn’t. His hands had done it, the sa muscle mory that knew where the copper pan hung and how long to leave oil in a pan before it was ready.
The inside was clean. Soone had been maintaining it without occupying it — surfaces without dust, a fireplace laid and ready, the specific tidiness of a space that had been prepared for arrival without knowing when arrival would co.
Grayson looked around the room. Sothing in his expression shifted — small, specific, the look of a man recognizing sothing he cannot rember choosing.
"Why did I buy this," he said. It wasn’t quite a question.
Mailah looked at the fireplace. The low ceiling. The window that faced the sea. "Because so part of you," she said, "wanted sowhere that wasn’t a fortress."
He considered this. "That’s a charitable interpretation."
"It’s the correct one."
He looked at her.
She crossed to the fireplace and knelt in front of it, reaching for the matches on the mantel.
Before she could strike one, a warmth moved past her shoulder — Grayson’s hand, extended past her, his palm open, and the fireplace caught with a quiet ignition that required no match at all.
He straightened.
She stayed kneeling, looking at the fire.
"Show-off," she said.
"Efficient," he said.
She stood.
The fire threw a warm, uneven light across the room — across the low furniture, the stone walls, the window where the lighthouse beam swept past in its patient rotation. Grayson stood in the middle of it looking entirely out of place in his suit and entirely, specifically correct in every other sense.
She crossed to him.
She didn’t say anything. She reached up and loosened his tie — practical, deliberate — and then his top button, because he had been in a suit for twenty hours and they were in a stone house above the sea at four in the morning and there was no one here to perform anything for.
He stood still and let her.
His eyes on her face. Blue and steady and doing that thing — the slow, thorough attention, cataloguing, the look that had been disarming her since God knows when and showed no signs of losing its effect.
She finished with the button and left her hand there, against his collar.
"Jas said take care of her," she said.
"He did."
"And you hung up and incinerated the phone."
"I did."
"Is that your version of taking it seriously?"
He reached up and covered her hand with his, pressing it flat against his chest. His heartbeat under her palm, steady and unchanged. "I brought you sowhere no one knows to look," he said. "I’d call that serious."
She looked up at him. The firelight moved across his face, catching the blue of his eyes, the sharp line of his jaw, the particular expression that was not soft and not cold and had no na she’d found yet.
"How long?" she said.
"As long as it takes," he said. The sa words he’d used with Jas, except aid at her, and they landed entirely differently.
She turned her hand over under his and laced her fingers through his fingers, and he let her, and outside the lighthouse kept its patient rotation and the sea kept its patient argunt with the rocks below, and neither of them moved for a long ti.
There was no protocol for this.
He didn’t appear to need one.
The fire had settled into its lower, steadier register by the ti either of them moved.
Grayson was the one who moved first. He stepped away from her — not retreat, just reorientation — and crossed to the window that faced the sea.
The lighthouse beam swept past at its patient interval, throwing a bar of light across the floor that moved and disappeared and returned with the reliability of sothing that had no opinions about what it illuminated.
He stood looking at the water with his hands behind his back.
Mailah watched him from the middle of the room. He looked, in the firelight and the intermittent lighthouse sweep, like a man trying to rember sothing that was happening to him in real ti.
The house was small enough that its dinsions were imdiately apparent — two rooms visible from where she stood, a third door that was probably a bedroom, a narrow staircase that likely led sowhere with a better view of the water.
He had bought this. So version of him had stood sowhere and signed a deed for a stone house on a coastal promontory and then never co.
She crossed to the other window — the one perpendicular to his, looking along the cliff rather than out to sea — and looked at the lighthouse.
"What’s the coast?" she asked.
"Wales," he said.
She turned to look at him. "You own a cottage in Wales."
"Apparently."
"A demon prince," she said, "owns a cottage in Wales."
"The paperwork confirms it."
She looked back at the lighthouse. "Did you have any theories? About why you bought it?"
A pause. "Most certainly, I ca back from a trip to this coast eight months ago and purchased it within the week. I assu it was an investnt." Another pause, with a different quality.
Eight months ago. The sa window as the protocol. The sa period when sothing in the architecture of him had apparently been shifting without his knowledge, making real estate decisions and writing plans with blank spaces that would eventually acquire nas.
Mailah looked at the room. The low ceiling, the stone floor, the fireplace that he had lit with his palm. The window that faced nothing but water and the patient lighthouse.
"You ca here," she said. "Before you bought it. You stood sowhere on this coast and sothing happened."
He didn’t confirm it. He also didn’t deny it, which had beco her most reliable indicator.
"What do you think it was?" she asked.
He turned from the window. The firelight caught him differently from this angle — the sharp lines of his face, the loosened collar, the quality of his expression which was doing that thing she had co to recognize as him actively deciding how much of an answer to give.
"I don’t know," he said. "But I bought the house." He looked around the room — the sa slow, cataloguing attention he gave everything. "Whatever it was, it made want sowhere that couldn’t be a battlefield."
She felt that land in her chest.
A demon prince. Ancient.
An exile by his own doing, living among humans in a fortified estate with security rotations and reinforced periters and brothers who occasionally threatened each other’s lives as a standard form of communication.
And soti ago, sothing on this coast had made him buy a house with low ceilings and a sea view and no tactical value whatsoever.
She crossed to the narrow staircase and looked up it.
"Can I?"
"It’s your house too," he said.
She stopped.
He was looking at the fire. His jaw was set in the way it set when he had said sothing and was not going to qualify it or retrieve it, the expression of a man who has decided a thing is true and has said it and considers the matter settled.
She turned and went up the stairs.
