Elara’s POV

The sergeant’s voice scraped across the silence like a blade on stone.

"Elara."

Just my na. No title. No surna. Spoken the way a butcher nas the next animal on the hook.

The two guards behind him moved before I could draw a full breath. Hands locked around my upper arms. Iron fingers digging into bruised flesh. They hauled to my feet so fast the cell tilted sideways.

My legs buckled. Without Moonlight’s strength feeding my muscles, my body was just a broken thing running on fear and adrenaline. The guards didn’t care. They dragged forward, my boots scraping across the wet flagstones.

Cold tal snapped around my wrists. Shackles. Heavy ones. The edges bit into the raw skin where ropes had already torn open, and I hissed through my teeth.

"Walk," the sergeant ordered.

I didn’t walk. I was dragged.

Through the heavy iron door. Into a corridor that stretched in both directions, lit by rusted iron lanterns hung along the low ceiling. The firelight was the color of infection—yellowed, flickering, casting shadows that jumped and shrank. The air was worse here. Thicker. Copper and rot and sothing alchemical underneath it all, sothing that stung the inside of my nose.

We passed more cells. Through narrow gaps beneath doors, I caught glimpses. Eyes staring out from the dark. Hollow faces. One cell was completely silent. The sll leaking from beneath its door told why.

A boot slamd into my lower back.

I pitched forward, my knees cracking against the stone. Pain exploded up through my thighs, my spine. The shackles wrenched my wrists as the chain caught my weight.

"Faster," the shorter guard muttered behind .

I forced myself upright. One step. Another. My blood vessels burned with the residual poison—every heartbeat pushing that vile holy water deeper into tissue, deeper into mory, deeper into the empty space where Moonlight should have been.

I’m still here. I’m still breathing.

That was all I had left to hold onto.

The corridor ended at a wider door. Reinforced. Bolted with several separate locks. The sergeant produced a ring of keys and worked through them with chanical efficiency.

The door swung inward.

The room beyond was larger than the cells. But "room" was generous. It was a slaughterhouse dressed up as a throne room. Chains hung from ceiling beams—thick chains, the links dark with old rust and older stains. The floor was stone here, and the grooves between the slabs were black. The walls bore scratch marks. Fingernail height.

Soone had tried to claw their way out of this place.

And there, waiting for —

Isolde stood to the left, one hip cocked against a wooden table cluttered with instrunts I refused to look at too closely. Black leather pants. A red silk blouse that probably cost more than most families earned in a season. The fabric was cut low across her collarbones, and I could see them—faint blue-green bruises ringing her throat like a necklace. My handiwork. From before they’d broken down with poison.

Good. I hoped they hurt.

And at the center, seated on a grotesque throne welded together from scrap tal and draped in animal hides, sat a man who made the room feel small.

Marak.

I’d heard his na whispered in the cell. The Rogue King. He was massive. Shoulders like a mountain ridge. Arms thick as tree trunks, crossed over a barrel chest. His face was a map of violence—scars layered over scars, one slicing through his left eyebrow and pulling the skin into a permanent half-squint. His eyes were pale. Almost colorless. The eyes of sothing that hunted in the dark and enjoyed it.

The guards shoved to the ground. My knees hit stone. The impact sent a jolt of white-hot pain through my already screaming body.

I stayed down for exactly one breath. Then I lifted my chin.

"Dear sister." I let the words drip with sweetness, masking the powerlessness of being cut off from Moonlight. "Love what you’ve done with the place. Very cozy."

Isolde’s lips curved. Not a smile. A blade in flesh form.

"Ela." She pushed off the table, her heels clicking against the stone as she crossed toward . "Still running that mouth. Even now." She crouched, bringing her face level with mine. Her perfu was thick and floral, obscene against the stench of the room. "I always admired that about you. The sheer stupidity of it."

"And I always admired your neck," I said, staring at the bruises. "Looks better in purple."

Her hand moved fast. The slap cracked across my cheekbone, snapping my head sideways. Stars burst behind my eyes.

Marak laughed. A low, rumbling sound, like rocks grinding together deep underground.

"She has teeth," he said. His voice was deep. Unhurried. The voice of a man who had never once needed to raise it to be obeyed. "I can see why he chose her."

He ant Kaelen.

"You’ve been collecting dead n for a long ti, haven’t you?" I said, turning to face the throne. Blood from a split lip ran warm down my chin. "Death row inmates. Prisoners nobody would miss. And now what? You think I’m just another na on your list?"

Marak tilted his massive head. The scars shifted with the movent. "Not just another na, darling. A very special na. The Emperor’s mate herself." His pale eyes glittered. "Do you know how long I’ve waited for a prize like you?"

"My mate will find this place." My voice ca out steadier than I felt, practically snarling the warning. "And when he does, he will hunt you down. Every wall. Every chain. Every one of you will burn."

Silence.

Then Isolde laughed. Bright. Musical. Poisonous.

"Oh, Ela," she mocked, gesturing to my trembling form. "Look at you. The paralytic holy water in your veins has left you completely defenseless, yet you still bark. Your mate can’t find what doesn’t exist. By the ti your precious Emperor musters his hounds, we’ll be ghosts. No trail. No trace. No you."

She gestured to one of the guards near the door.

He stepped forward. In his hand was a syringe.

My stomach dropped.

It was twice the size of the one they’d used before. The barrel was thick glass, and the liquid inside was a sickly, luminescent green—bright enough to glow faintly in the dim light. It swirled with an oily iridescence, alive and wrong.

"You rember the first dose, don’t you?" Isolde’s voice was silk over broken glass. "The one that put your little wolf to sleep? That was a lullaby, Ela. A gentle hush." She took the syringe from the guard and held it up, letting the green light play across her features. "This is the funeral."

My heart slamd against my ribs.

"Double the concentration," she continued, almost conversationally. "Enough to permanently sever the nerve connection between you and your wolf. Moonlight dies first. Then, without her sustaining your Alpha bloodline..." She shrugged one elegant shoulder. "You follow."

"You’re bluffing."

"Am I?" She turned to Marak, offering him the syringe. "Your Majesty?"

Marak rose from his throne, a predatory smirk stretching his scarred features. The animal hides shifted and fell. Standing, he was a wall of flesh and scar tissue. He crossed the distance between us in a few slow strides, taking the heavy syringe from Isolde’s hand, and stopped directly in front of .

His left hand ca down on the top of my skull. Not a strike. A grip. His thick fingers wrapping around my head like a vise, tilting my neck to the side by force. Exposing the vein.

I thrashed. Threw my weight sideways. The shackles caught. The chains held. The guards behind seized my shoulders and pinned . I couldn’t move. Couldn’t even turn my head.

"Hold still, princess," Marak murmured against my ear, his cold eyes gleaming. His breath was hot. Rancid. "It’ll hurt less."

Marak raised his right hand. The thick glass barrel of the syringe caught the light in his massive grip.

"No—"

He drove the needle directly into my neck, plunging the toxic liquid into my veins.

And then—

Fire.

Not the burn of the first dose. Not a slow simr building to a boil. This was an inferno detonating at the point of entry and ripping outward through every vein, every nerve, every thread of connection that made . It tore through the bond—the place where Moonlight lived, the golden thread I’d been reaching for since I woke in that cell—and it didn’t just sever it.

It incinerated it.

I scread. The sound ripped from sowhere primal, sowhere deeper than my throat. My spine arched. My fingers clawed at nothing. The chains rattled and shrieked against their bolts.

Moonlight—

Silence. Absolute. Final.

Not sleeping. Not fading. Gone. As if she had never existed. As if that part of had been carved out with surgical precision and burned to cinder.

The pain didn’t stop. It kept going—wave after wave, each one stripping sothing away. Strength. Warmth. The last fragile architecture of who I was.

I couldn’t breathe. My vision fractured into shards of light and dark. My body convulsed against the stone floor, muscles seizing and releasing in spasms I couldn’t control.

Valerius.

His face swam behind my eyelids. Dark curls. Golden eyes. That serious little frown he wore when he was thinking too hard.

I’m sorry, my love. I’m so sorry. Mama tried.

The darkness rushed in. Cold. Complete. Absolute.

My eyes trembled shut, and everything fell silent.
