CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE ESCAPE

The chamber was silent except for their breathing.

Shen Chen stuffed the scrolls and artifacts into his robes, his hands trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and adrenaline. The weight of his failure pressed down on him, but he pushed it aside. There would be ti to grieve later. Now, he needed to survive.

"We need to move," Lian Xue said, her voice low and urgent. "The others will have found the passage by now. They'll be coming."

Shen Chen nodded, his throat too dry to speak. He could feel it too—the distant thrum of spiritual energy, the approaching auras of cultivators who would not hesitate to kill him.

They're coming. And if they find here, I'm dead.

They slipped back through the hidden passage, their footsteps silent on the stone floor. The guardian was still there, its eyes glowing with golden light, but it didn't react. It had been programd to guard the chamber, not the passage.

Small rcies.

They erged into the main corridor, their bodies pressed against the wall. The sounds of the expedition echoed around them—shouts, footsteps, the clash of weapons against stone.

"This way," Lian Xue whispered, tugging at his sleeve. "There's a side passage. It leads to the outer periter."

Shen Chen followed her, his body moving on autopilot. His mind was a blur of fear and exhaustion, his limbs heavy with fatigue.

Keep moving. Don't stop. Don't think.

They moved through the side passage, their footsteps echoing in the darkness. The walls were rough and uneven, the ceiling so low that they had to crouch to pass.

"We're almost there," Lian Xue said. "Just a little further."

And then they heard it.

A voice, sharp and commanding, echoing from the corridor behind them.

"There! I see them! Stop them!"

Shen Chen's blood ran cold. They found us.

He didn't look back. He didn't need to. He could hear the footsteps, feel the auras blazing behind them, sense the killing intent radiating from their pursuers.

Run. Run. Run.

They burst out of the passage into the open air, the night sky stretching above them. The moon was full, its light casting long shadows across the rocky terrain.

"They're coming!" Lian Xue shouted. "We need to split up!"

"No!" Shen Chen grabbed her arm. "They'll pick us off one by one. We stay together."

She hesitated, then nodded. "Fine. But if you slow down, I'm leaving you."

They ran, their feet pounding against the rocky ground. The terrain was treacherous, littered with loose stones and deep crevices, but they didn't slow. They couldn't slow.

"Stop them!" the voice shouted again. "The Patriarch wants them alive!"

Shen Chen risked a glance back. A group of cultivators was erging from the passage, their auras blazing with power. They were fast—too fast.

We're not going to make it.

A blast of spiritual energy slamd into the ground beside them, sending rocks flying. Shen Chen stumbled, his body crashing into Lian Xue.

"Keep moving!" she shouted, pulling him to his feet.

They ran on, their lungs burning, their legs screaming with each step. The cultivators were closing in, their attacks raining down around them.

Shen Chen felt sothing slam into his back—a burst of spiritual energy that sent him flying forward. His body crashed against the rocks, his vision swimming with pain.

"Chen!" Lian Xue's voice was distant, muffled.

Get up. Get up, you useless piece of—

He pushed himself to his feet, his body screaming in protest. Blood was running down his face, his vision blurred with pain.

"Leave ," he gasped. "Just go."

"Shut up," she snapped, grabbing his arm. "I'm not leaving you."

She dragged him forward, her strength surprising. They stumbled through the darkness, their movents desperate and uncoordinated.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

The cultivators were almost on top of them. Shen Chen could feel their auras, blazing like furnaces, could sense the killing intent radiating from their attacks.

And then, a flash of light.

A massive explosion of fla erupted between them and their pursuers, a wall of fire that roared with the fury of a living thing.

"Go!" Lian Xue shouted. "Now!"

Shen Chen didn't hesitate. He ran, his body moving on pure instinct. The wall of fire was imnse, its heat searing against his skin, but it held the cultivators back.

They stumbled into a narrow canyon, its walls towering above them. The sounds of pursuit faded, replaced by the rush of wind and the pounding of their hearts.

Shen Chen collapsed against the canyon wall, his body trembling with exhaustion. He couldn't feel his legs. He couldn't feel anything.

"Are you okay?" Lian Xue asked, her voice tight with concern.

He looked at her, his vision swimming. "I... I don't know."

She studied him, her eyes scanning his wounds. "You're bleeding heavily. Your back is a ss. We need to find a place to rest and treat your wounds."

"Where... where do we go?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

She hesitated. "I know a place. A safe house. It's not far from here. But you have to stay awake. Can you do that?"

He nodded, though the motion made his head spin.

"Good. Stay with ."

---

They moved through the night, Lian Xue supporting Shen Chen's weight. The canyon gave way to rolling hills, then to a dense forest. The moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground.

Shen Chen's mind drifted, his thoughts fragnted and unclear. He could feel the warmth of Lian Xue's body against his, the steady rhythm of her breathing.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

"Almost there," she said, her voice soft. "Just a little further."

The forest opened into a small clearing. At its center stood a cabin, its walls covered in vines and moss. It looked abandoned, forgotten, a relic of a ti long past.

"Here," Lian Xue said, guiding him inside. "Rest."

He collapsed onto a bed of straw, his body sinking into its warmth. The last thing he saw was Lian Xue's face, her expression filled with concern.

And then, darkness.
