THE HEARTH FIRE

The evening air was cool, carrying the scent of dust and sagebrush.

Shen Chen sat by the fire, his body warm from the day's labors. The bandits had gathered around the flas, their faces illuminated by the dancing light. The conversation was light, filled with laughter and teasing.

"Rember when Old Liu tried to ride that spirit boar?" one of the bandits said, his voice rough with laughter. "Broke his leg and his pride in one go!"

Old Liu scowled, but his eyes twinkled with amusent. "That boar was cursed, I tell you. No one could have ridden it."

"Sure, sure," another bandit chid in. "That's why i rode it the next day without breaking a sweat."

A woman with sharp eyes and a wicked grin—i—raised her cup in a toast. "Because I know how to handle a wild beast. Unlike so people."

The camp erupted in laughter. Shen Chen found himself smiling, the sound of their voices a balm to his weary soul.

Old Liu turned to him, his expression softening. "What about you, boy? Any stories from your past you'd like to share?"

Shen Chen hesitated. His past was a tangle of pain and disappointnt, of dreams crushed and hopes abandoned. But these people had earned his trust.

"I was born into a cultivation clan," he said, his voice low. "The Shen Clan. I was the second son, the failure, the wastrel. Everyone looked down on , called worthless. My father... he gave up on before I was even born."

The laughter faded, replaced by a heavy silence.

"I spent years trying to prove them wrong," Shen Chen continued. "I trained, I studied, I sacrificed everything. And in the end, they threw away like garbage. They disowned , cast out, left to die."

He paused, his throat tight with emotion. "But then I ca here. To the Desolation. I t all of you. And I found a new family. A better family."

i reached out and squeezed his hand. "You're one of us now, Chen. Never forget that."

Shen Chen nodded, a lump in his throat. "I won't."

The silence was broken by a voice from the edge of the fire. "Speaking of family," a young man with a scarred face said, "who's going to tell Chen about the initiation?"

Old Liu's eyes widened. "Not yet. He's not ready."

"Initiation?" Shen Chen asked, his curiosity piqued.

The bandits exchanged glances, their expressions ranging from amused to apprehensive.

"It's a tradition," Old Liu said, sighing. "Every new mber of the camp has to go through it. It's a test of courage, of loyalty, of... well, stupidity."

Shen Chen raised an eyebrow. "What kind of test?"

i grinned, her eyes gleaming. "You'll find out soon enough."
