KADEN’S POV
The walk to the dical wing felt longer than usual. Every step I took was a battle between my pride and the strange, dark urge pulling toward her. I kept my face blank as I passed the guards in the corridors, but inside, my mind was a chaotic ss.
When I finally reached the heavy double doors of the dical wing, I stopped. I didn’t sll the usual sharp scent of dicine and blood first. Instead, I slled him. Kane.
Then, through the slight crack in the door, his deep voice drifted out into the hallway.
"If you are claustrophobic, then you should be using the stairs," Kane was saying, his tone gentle and entirely too relaxed.
I frowned, my chest tightening instantly. Was Kane here? Why the hell was he visiting my prisoner?
A sudden, hot flash of anger burned away the last remnants of my sleep. I didn’t bother knocking. I gripped the brass handle and pushed the door open with a violent force that made it slam against the wall.
The room went dead silent.
Rebecca was lying on the bed, her face still pale but her breathing steady. Kane was standing right beside her, leaning slightly over the mattress. The very second they both saw standing in the doorway, they froze. Pure terror flashed across Rebecca’s face, draining what little color remained from her already pale cheeks, and even Kane’s eyes widened in surprise. They looked exactly like they had just been caught doing sothing forbidden.
Of course they didn’t think I would co. Even I hadn’t thought I would show up here.
Kane was the first to break the silence. He cleared his throat, his broad shoulders relaxing as he stepped back from the bed. "You ca..."
I didn’t let him finish. I didn’t want to hear his voice, and I definitely didn’t want to see him anywhere near her.
"Kane Draven," I said, my voice filled with absolute authority. "Excuse us."
Kane’s expression hardened slightly. He knew better than anyone. He knew that whenever I called him by his full na, I was completely serious, and my wolf was on the very edge of violence.
For a second, I thought he might argue. But he just looked down at Rebecca, then back at , letting out a tight breath. He nodded slowly and walked past , his shoulder brushing mine as he exited the room and shut the door behind him.
The mont the door clicked shut, the last bit of my control snapped.
I marched over to the bed in three large strides. Before Rebecca could even scream or pull the blankets away, I reached down, grabbed the front of her torn dress in my fist, and pulled her completely off the bed.
She let out a sharp, terrified gasp as I dragged her across the small space and slamd her back hard against the wall.
"Ah!" she whimpered, her small hands instantly coming up to grip my wrists, her entire body trembling violently against mine.
I leaned in close, towering over her until my shadow completely swallowed her up. The sweet, intoxicating scent of her skin rushed into my nose, mixing with the sharp fear rolling off her in waves. It made my wolf roar under my skin, confused and angry.
"What are you doing?" I hissed, my face inches from hers. I tightened my grip on her dress, pinning her so tightly to the stone that she couldn’t even wriggle a finger. "What are you doing to my family, Rebecca? You are a witch, right?"
"N-No..." she choked out, tears instantly filling her wide, beautiful eyes. "Alpha, please..."
"Don’t lie to !" I roared right into her face. "First, you sneak into my room last night. Then, you bewitch my brother into defying my orders in front of my own guards! And now..." I paused, my jaw clenching so hard it ached as the mory of the dream flashed through my mind. "Now you are causing to have silly dreams! You are ssing with my head!"
Rebecca shook her head frantically, the tears finally spilling over her pale cheeks. "I didn’t do anything... I swear to you, Alpha!"
"Shut up!" I snapped, my eyes locking onto her trembling lips.
I wanted to hate her. I needed to hate her. But standing this close to her, feeling the rapid beat of her heart against my chest, the wall of anger I had built up began to crack. I was furious that she had this power over . I was furious that even after a terrifying nightmare of my dead mate, the only thing I could think about was putting my hands back on the girl who supposedly killed her.
