Chapter 55
As the last shareholder walked out of the room, a thick heavy silence, just like the one in an examination hall, enveloped the entire room. Alex remained seated while occasionally stealing glances at Nyx, who sat in her chair, with her eyes locked directly on his face.
They were the only two people left inside the large eting room that could fit at least a hundred people, yet everywhere suddenly felt really small. So much so that it started to feel like the walls were closing in around him.
As Alex continued to watch her scrutinizing gaze, he couldn’t help it as different thoughts raced through his mind.
’Shit! Did she discover that I had gone to save Olivia earlier... No, I covered it up during my wonderful speech about staying up all night to co up with that idea. So maybe it’s not about my coming late. But then why did she call here...? And giving that weird look like I just stole her pie?’
Nyx’s calm voice instantly broke through the thick awkward silence.
"Alex. Do you know why I asked you to wait?"
Alex shook his head. How would he know? Especially when she was trying to act all cool and mysterious... Okay maybe she did look a bit cool.
"There are two reasons. The first one is because of the way you acted today... You’ve just proven to the entire company that you’re a force to be reckoned with and I like that. But you’ve also put yourself in a nasty position where you can’t turn back, all thanks to your annoying habit of challenging people with that sharp tongue of yours. You know you really are like a magnet for trouble."
"And what about the second reason?"
"The second reason I called you back is because," her voice turned noticeably colder, and her eyes lost all hint of emotion. It felt like staring into an endless abyss. "Why were you so late today, even after my repeated warnings? I know that during your speech you indirectly stated the reason but it doesn’t explain the blood on the edge of your shoe? Though it was barely noticeable, I still managed to catch sight of it."
’Dammit! I knew I should have checked my body properly, especially after getting blood on my shoe from that gang leader... or was it the earlier bastard who tried to rape Olivia? ’
Alex cleared his throat and forced himself to act casual.
"The blood? Oh, that. Earlier today I ran into a giant rat in the alley on my way here. The bastard tried to bite , I guess it was probably because of the donut in my hand. So I killed the giant vermin with my shoe, and boy oh boy, it wasn’t easy. But It looks like so of the blood must have rubbed on my shoe in the process. So don’t over think it. It’s just rat blood."
Nyx leaned forward searching his face for any trace of a lie, but his expression was so honest and innocent, that she was forced to believe it. Though only half-heartedly. It was clear from her face that she didn’t really believe him, but decided to just let it slide.
"Fine I believe your so called rat story for now, but rember I don’t like being lied to... But that’s by the way. I want you to explain why you ca to the eting looking so disheveled? Don’t you have any proper clothes that you could just wear for this eting?"
"Funny you should ask," Alex said while putting up a pitiful face. "Well I was expecting a certain woman who told days ago that she was going to send one hundred thousand dollars into my bank account to actually send the money. I even had plans to use that money to buy so decent clothes for occasions like this. But sadly it seed like the woman had forgotten. So that’s why I wore what I had."
Nyx’s expression froze, the mont she realized that that woman he was referring to was her. For the first ti in a long while, she actually looked embarrassed. She looked away and coughed lightly into her hand before slowly regained her composure.
"I’ve been busy," she muttered, her voice sounding defensive. "And unlike you, I have more than one responsibility to handle, so it sort of slipped my mind."
Alex raised an eyebrow slightly, he wasn’t too convinced with her excuse but also chose not to push forward. He figured that there was no need to press her when he had already made his point.
"Regardless," she continued while straightening her body in the chair as if she wanted to reassert her authority. "That doesn’t change the fact that your appearance today was unacceptable. You represent a significant portion of this company now. So whether you like it or not, people will judge BluePeak based on how you carry yourself... Plus I don’t want my man looking so unkempt."
Alex leaned in, eting her eyes without any hesitation.
"Then maybe you should make sure that your man is properly equipped before expecting him to look the part."
Nyx held his gaze for a second longer than normal, before letting out a sigh, already deciding that it would be a waste of ti to argue over sothing so trivial.
"Fine. I’ll have my people transfer the money into your account before the day runs out."
Alex grinned, while flashing his pearly whites in joy.
"Perfect. And don’t worry I’ll make sure to always look good in front of you. But you know... I think I also need a car... A Lamborghini would be really nice don’t you think? But make it black. What do you think, can you get it for honey?"
Nyx glared at him.
"Don’t push it, Alex. If not..."
Alex cut in while shaking his head nonchalantly.
"I know. I know. That you probably cut off my body, or you’ll have your people beat , or maybe even feed to the fishes. Yeah I’ve heard them a thousand tis."
"..."
Nyx was speechless at his tone and resisted the dark thought to strangle him, right here, right now. Instead she just held his gaze in silence for a few seconds before speaking calmly.
"You really do enjoy pushing my buttons. Just be careful not to push too far one day."
Alex only smiled, completely unfazed by her words.
"I doubt that. Do you know why?" He paused while staring at her intently. "Because such a day will never co, since by that ti you would have really begun seeing as your man."
Nyx scoffed while crossing her tender snow white arms over each other, causing her ample chest to shoot forward.
"Hmph. Keep on dreaming. I will never fall in love. Love is just a delusion for idiots who don’t want to face the grim reality of this world... If love was really real, then there would be nothing like betrayal in this world. At the end of the day, only weaklings fall in the trap called love."
"Yeah, maybe you’re right." Alex said, his playful mood suddenly disappearing. "Maybe love really is for weaklings.... To be honest I don’t even rember what love is anymore, and it’s probably for the best that I don’t... But the human heart is unpredictable... You know what? Let’s just forget about all this feeling stuff."
Nyx didn’t respond imdiately, she just lingered her eyes on him for a mont longer, then slowly stood up. The sound of her heels echoed faintly across the vast eting as she adjusted the hem of her sleeve, and took a step forward, but then paused just beside him.
"Get yourself together and forget whatever might have made you like this."
Without waiting for a reply, she walked past him and exited the room, leaving Alex all alone in the vast, opulent room. Talking about love and betrayal had made him rember what transpired in his previous life.
He let out a low, humorless chuckle under his breath.
"Heh! Look at ," he muttered while running a hand through his thick hair. "Talking about love like I didn’t already get taught the lesson of a lifeti."
Just the stupid thought of Emily’s infidelity and Zack’s betrayal made him want to bash the two bastard’s heads together. He hadn’t gotten his full revenge on those idiots yet. But one thing was certain, he wasn’t only going to take their mothers away from them. No, that would just be letting them off too easily. Instead, he was going to ruin their life in this life in the most devastating way possible.
He was going to break them so much that they would beco shells of their forr selves, ’No!’ He shook his head. He was going to break them so much that, even those who had already reached the absolute breaking points of their life, will begin to cast pitying glances at them.
Still even when he tried calming down, there was still this massive amount of anger burning in his chest, just from recollecting about that incident. He realized that what he really needed right now, was a way to vent this anger. And luckily he already knew just exactly where to start.
The boss who sent his goons to kidnap Olivia would really make a great punching bag. So without further ado, Alex hurriedly got up, left the company’s building and dashed straight toward the Boss’s villa with a dark grin on his lips. He could already feel his knuckles aching for the bastard’s face.
