"Let go, woman." Mater squird and slipped off of Selina’s hand.
He stared at the girl with murderous intent.
Selina forced a smile. "Co on now. Don’t look at like that."
The receptionist chuckled. "Your familiar is really feisty."
"Familiar?" Selina raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah. He is your familiar, right?"
"What is a familiar?"
"Your mother didn’t tell you? Oh, right. I’m sorry. I forgot that she is gone. Please accept my sincerest apologies."
"It’s alright. But it sounds like you know how she dies?"
"I do, actually. But it is classified. I can’t tell you anything, Selina. You will have to learn about it yourself once you reach the appropriate level."
Selina clenched her fist tightly. Suddenly, all the anxiety and doubt inside her were gone.
"Please guide to the examination."
"Of course."
The receptionist typed sothing into her computer before turning back to Selina.
"Please take a left and enter the elevator. Once you’re inside, please press the following floor in a sequence. Floor 6. Floor 1. And Floor 6. Then press for the door to close."
"616? Alright. I’ll do that."
Selina went to the elevator.
The receptionist called out to her. "Selina! My na is Aria. If you need help, call !"
"I will. Thank you, Aria." Selina smiled at the receptionist before disappearing into the hallway.
She entered an elevator and pressed ’6’, ’1’, ’6’, respectively. All the buttons lit up in white with the ’Door Close’ button lit up in red.
Selina pressed it.
"Finally. We can finally see what the higher level of this word is like." Mater owed. He climbed on Selina’s shoulders and sat on them.
The elevator opened but not in the front. The wall behind Selina opened up, letting a white light pierced through.
Selina turned back and saw the true Institute.
The Institute had two levels. The level above where every citizen could enter. It contained only mundane knowledge and ordinary mythology. The real secrets were in the second level.
The underground level. The entirety of the Institute stayed hidden several kiloters underground, way beneath any sewage system or subway.
The elevator was climbing down a glass cylinder-like structure.
The facility beneath the ground was a vast lobby containing different pathways leading to other departnts and classes of the Institute.
When the elevator reached the bottom. Two small caras in the elevator shot out green lasers that scanned Selina and Mater.
"Unknown visitor..."
"Unknown animal companion..."
"Sending welcoming agents now..."
The elevator opened and standing there were two n dressed in black.
"State your business." One of the n said.
"Examination. The ACPD recomnded ."
"Na?"
"Selina Isles."
The man clicked on the earpieces on his head. "Check for any new recruits under ’Isles’."
The man nodded a few tis before turning to Selina. "Welco, Miss Isles to the Institute of Supernatural Phenonon. Please follow us. We will lead you to the examination room."
"Alright."
Selina followed them through the hallway. There were many people in the vast lobby. Most of them were wearing black suits similar to these two n. The rest had all kinds of attire.
So were wearing long robes that looked like they were so kind of priest. A few wore pointy hats similar to witches in the movie. Even so that were wearing a full suit of leather armor.
"What even is this place?" Selina mumbled.
One of the n in front of her turned back and smiled. Their attitude beca much better after they verified her identity.
"Please excuse their appearance. Psychics can be... extravagant."
Selina walked through the majority of the lobby and stopped in front of a tunnel with the symbol of a question on top.
The two n stood to the side.
"Please enter. There will be personnel welcoming you."
"Thank you."
Selina entered the tunnel. It led to a room with many tables and chairs. There were quite a few people already sitting around. They ca from all across society with all kinds of outfits.
There was a young girl wearing a high school outfit.
A large muscular man wearing a white tank top and military pants.
A brooding young man with hair that covered half of his face. His clothes were rather normal.
A man in a business suite. A lady in a red glamour dress.
Then there was Rebecca in her long overcoat and a hat that scread detective.
"Isles?" Rebecca stood up.
"Martinez?" Selina blurted out.
"I heard Detective Baltimore was recomnding you to do an examination. I didn’t think it would be the sa day as ." Rebecca said. She didn’t have the usual arrogance.
"My cat told to go do it." Selina shrugged
"Pfft! Your cat? Are you even a real Psychic?" The lady in a red glamour dress scoffed.
Mater snapped at her. He imdiately opened his mouth to blow that smug look off her face.
But Selina grabbed his snout and shut his mouth.
"You can’t just hurt them because they say sothing an, Mr. Mater!" Selina said.
Mater rolled his eyes and owed deeply. "Alright. Alright. Let go."
The cat slipped off her hands and jumped down on the floor. It went in front of the lady and hissed at her.
"Better watch your mouth next ti, woman. My woman won’t always be around to stop ."
"What a spicy kitten? What can it do? Scare to death?" The lady laughed again. Her high-pitched and sour laugh was extrely irritating to the ears.
"I won’t ss with him if I were you, lady. He is more dangerous than ."
The lady smirked.
The man in the military pants on the other hand squinted his eyes. He was the only one in the room that took her words seriously.
"Does everyone here co for the examination too?" Selina asked Rebecca.
"Yeah. They also have a slot. You are the only one that has a recomndation though. I have to work my ass off to reach Bronze Rank." Rebecca said.
"I also have enough tokens to reach Bronze Rank already. But it said that I need sothing called a Psychics Certificate." Selina said.
Rebecca stared at her. "You’re joking, right? It took six months to reach Bronze Rank. How did you even..."
"You can tell them, Selina." Mater owed.
For so reason, Selina actually understood what he was communicating. She didn’t understand every single word but she knew what his intention was.
"Well... I solved three NCEs related cases by myself."
That sentence attracted the attention of everyone in the room.
