Early five in the morning, Jas Black was jolted awake by a phone call. It took him just over a minute to answer the call before he furrowed his eyebrows and got out of bed.
Jane Sampson was sleeping in his arms, so the commotion couldn’t have gone unnoticed by her.
"What’s wrong?" Jas got out of bed, and Jane followed, sitting up groggily, rubbing her eyes as she asked.
"I have an urgent matter and need to leave early today. You let your new assistant accompany you around King Town," Jas said as he dressed, then tenderly kissed Jane on the forehead.
"Back to Capital Province?" Jane asked.
"No, sowhere else," Jas replied.
"On a mission?" Not returning to Capital Province and leaving urgently for elsewhere ant he must be off on a mission.
"Mm," Jas nodded.
"When the mission ends, will you co back to King Town?" Jane instinctively reached out to grasp the hem of Jas’s clothes, as if afraid he was in such a hurry that he didn’t even have ti to finish their conversation.
"No, I’ll head straight back to Capital Province when the mission ends," Jas responded.
Seeing Jane’s face crinkle slightly, Jas covered her eyes with his hand and said in a deep voice, "No crying."
Jane’s eyelashes fluttered against his palm, and Jas could feel her blinking repeatedly.
A few seconds later, Jane pushed Jas’s hand away and said, "I’m not crying, I’m really not as delicate as you think. I just woke up and my eyes are naturally wet."
Jane got out of bed. "Go wash up, and I’ll pack your stuff."
Jas studied Jane’s expression intently, and seeing no sign of tears, he humd in acknowledgnt and turned to enter the bathroom.
While brushing his teeth, he could still hear Jane packing up his things outside. Although Jane always appeared laid-back, she was thodical and diligent when it ca to tasks, never leaving anything half-done.
When he ca out of the bathroom, she had already packed all his belongings, and even the pajamas he had changed out of were neatly folded in his luggage bag.
"Is there a car coming to the hotel to pick you up, or do you need to go to the airport? Or maybe the train station?" Jane handed over his luggage bag to him. "If you’re not in a rush, wait for to change and wash up, and I can drop you off."
"I’m heading to the train station to take a train," Jas said. "It’s too early; don’t bother dropping off. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with you coming back from the train station alone, so just keep sleeping. I’ll call you when the mission ends and I’m back in Capital Province."
Jane considered this and saw the sense in it, so she didn’t press the issue of whether to send him off or not.
"Co here for a hug," Jas opened his arms towards Jane.
Without hesitation, Jane walked over and hugged Jas. "Then you take care of yourself."
"Mm," Jas gently touched her hair, then said, "Kiss ."
It wasn’t really a question or a discussion; he simply lowered his head and kissed her.
The kiss, filled with reluctance and affection, was lingering and gentle.
Once the kiss ended, Jane stepped out of Jas’s arms.
She touched her lips with her fingertips, murmuring softly, "I just woke up and haven’t even brushed my teeth yet!"
"You still sll sweet," Jas replied with a playful tone, giving Jane’s head a final mischievous rub with his palm. "I’m leaving now. Go back to bed and keep sleeping."
After receiving a smile from Jane, Jas finally turned, opened the door, and left the room.
