In the ti that followed, Father Sampton’s brain was constantly drifting uncontrollably toward thoughts about the island project of Chip Family. One mont he was thinking about the project’s developnt, the next he was calculating how many shares he might be able to claim with his current capability.
He even considered selling off so of his immovable property to liquidate funds for investnt into the island project.
A mound of yellow earth, a single tombstone — this marked the burial of the lifeti of a Great General who founded the nation.
Perhaps for others, it was rely the passing of a hero seen on the news. People would look at the life of this Anti-Japanese War hero and sigh about his story, lanting, "What a pity."
But for Jane Sampson and Granny Sampson, what had passed was family.
What had been buried was half their heart, was a layer of flesh.
A single grave could tear through their souls like bone being scraped clean.
After sending off all the guests, Granny Sampson held onto Jane Sampson’s hand and returned to Old Sir Sampton’s grave. She didn’t hurry to leave; she stood there, staring blankly at the photo of Old Sir Sampton.
In the photo, the Old Sir wore a tranquil smile. In the blink of an eye, it was as if he were standing alive in front of her, smiling at her. Then, in the next blink, even his face seed to regain its youth, just like that day in the past when he nervously held her hand, shyly wanting to marry her.
"The rest of you can head back now. I want to stay here and talk a bit more with the Old Sir," Granny Sampson said to Father Sampton and Mother Sampton. "Let Bright Sampson and Jas Black wait at the cetery gate entrance, but leave Jane here with ."
"Alright." Father Sampton nodded, his mind preoccupied with other matters. Turning to Jane Sampson and Bright Sampton, he reminded them briefly, "Take good care of your grandmother."
After speaking, Father Sampson called for his wife and left together with her.
Granny Sampson instructed Jas Black and Bright Sampson to wait by the main gate, and once they had walked further away, she gently held Jane Sampson’s hand and patted it, saying, "Jane, Grandma has so things I want to tell you."
Granny Sampson directly led Jane Sampson by the hand and sat down on the step nearby.
Having stood all morning, Granny Sampson’s body was beginning to wear out.
"Grandma, what do you want to tell ? How about we discuss it when we’re ho?" Jane Sampson embraced Granny Sampson, saying, "You’ve been standing for hours this morning; you must be tired. Let’s head back so you can rest. I’ll go back with you and rest with you."
"I want to say these things here, right in front of your grandpa." Granny Sampson shook her head. "If I don’t say them now, I’m afraid I’ll never get the chance again later."
"Grandma, I forbid you to talk like that." Jane Sampson’s eyes grew hot as she hugged Granny Sampson’s arm tightly. "Grandma, Grandpa may have gone, but you have to promise , no matter what, you must take care of yourself. Watch through my pregnancy and see my baby born. You need to knit sweaters for my baby, buy them little shoes."
Granny Sampson suddenly let out a soft laugh.
It was the first ti Granny Sampson had smiled since the incident with Old Sir Sampton, and it was here, in front of Old Sir Sampton’s grave, that she laughed.
"Alright, alright, I’ll do my best," Granny Sampson said, stroking Jane Sampson’s head. "You’re so good at being playful; no wonder Jas Black spoils you more and more."
"Even if I don’t act playful, he still spoils . After all, he was handpicked by Grandpa and Grandma to be your grandson-in-law," Jane Sampson replied.
"Jane, there’s sothing your grandpa and I have owed you for more than a decade. We never told you, and now your grandpa has lost his chance. So Grandma will say it on his behalf, together with my own," Granny Sampson said with a bittersweet expression. "Jane, we’re sorry. Grandpa and Grandma failed you. We owe you so much, so very much."
