After hearing the sound of water rushing in the bath room, Jas Black picked up the nu from the tabletop and flipped through it, then used the landline inside the room to call for a al.
Jane Sampson ca out of the bath room to find Jas sitting on the sofa, inspecting sothing in his hands, but she couldn’t tell what it was.
Hearing her, Jas looked up at Jane and gave her a look that suggested she co sit by him, without saying a word.
Jane shuffled slowly over with tiny steps, glancing at the backpack next to her. Then in a soft voice, she asked, "Aren’t you staying at the guesthouse with Peter Gingery?"
"Mhm," Jas responded in a deep voice, then opened the box he was holding, bent over, and applied the ointnt from the jar onto Jane’s sowhat swollen toenail.
It was then that Jane realized what he had been studying in his hand was the ointnt, and the bag he had carried in was from a pharmacy nearby.
So, he had rembered the minor injury on her foot and specifically bought dicine to apply on it for her?
"Keep it dry for the next two days." After applying the ointnt to Jane’s foot, Jas instructed, then noticing the sandals next to her, he asked, "Did you bring any flat shoes?"
"I did," Jane nodded.
"Don’t wear high heels for the next two days," Jas said as he put the dicine back into the box, "Twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Rember to apply it first thing when you get up, and wait ten minutes before putting on socks."
Jane responded with an "Okay," and continued nodding. Then, seeing Jas take bath products out of his backpack and proceed to the bath room, she finally confird that Jas was indeed planning to spend the night here.
If she had known it would co to this, Jane thought, she would have kept quiet on the express train, even if the annoying child had pulled off her toenail.
Why had Jas been popping up everywhere in her life lately?
To think she would bump into him on a business trip!
Despite her internal complaints, Jane turned her head to look at the dicine on the table, then glanced once more toward the direction of the bath room.
Jas, in fact, was a man of few words, frugal with his speech.
If he ever did speak more than necessary, on the express train, he might have said sothing like this.
Endure it for now, once we get off the train and back to the hotel, I’ll go to the pharmacy and buy you so dicine.
But him, he would only utter two words and do the rest through actions.
The doorbell sound interrupted Jane’s daydreaming; opening the door, she wasn’t at all surprised to find the hotel’s al delivery, having guessed as much when Jas wordlessly discarded her instant noodles.
A simple al of two dishes and a soup: one at, one vegetable, a bowl of yam soup, a small bucket of rice, and a small dish that appeared to be a complintary pickled radish appetizer.
Jane had just set the als on the table when Jas ca out of the bath room. The fragrance of the als finally suppressed the sll of instant noodles in the room. Seeing the waiter preparing to leave, Jas pointed to the trash can, indicating for the waiter to take out the trash as well, effectively eliminating the odor of the instant noodles.
After eating, Jane held her mobile phone and played a ga to help her digest, only climbing into bed reluctantly when her phone shut off automatically due to low battery.
It was just after ten o’clock. Looking at Jas, who had been sitting on the sofa reading a book since after the al, seemingly undisturbed by her playing gas, Jane buried her head into the quilt and mumbled, "Jas Black, sleep!"
She had thought he would get annoyed by her voice, which would give her a legitimate reason to send him away. But unexpectedly, he didn’t make a sound.
