You could tell that Jane Sampson was not soone who was endlessly agreeable in conversation. She wouldn’t have spoken up against Amber Edwards just now if she were.

"After all, Jane Sampson has been calling you ’mother’ for over 20 years. Even if you play favorites, can’t you be more discreet about it? It’s so obvious that even outsiders can see your bias reaching all the way to the Arctic Ocean!" Father Sampton issued a direct order, "After dinner tonight, you call her."
"What am I supposed to call her for if there’s nothing wrong?" Mother Sampton shook her head, "I don’t have ti. I promised Julie that after dinner, I’d take her out to the shopping mall to shop for so new clothes and jewelry, to cheer her up a bit. Julie has quit her job and is now moping at ho all day. As her father, why don’t you think of a way to help her?"
