"Noooo! I can’t allow this!"
Catherine, who had fallen silent after hearing Pax’s decision, suddenly shouted, startling everyone. Her outburst nearly frightened Corey, who had just been struck by the unexpected maturity of her friend’s younger brother.
Corey believed Pax’s sacrifice was unnecessary. After all, she and her boss planned to destroy the ’Seven Princes of Hell’ dark faction before they could launch the second demon invasion of the Card World. Yet every ti she tried to say this and reassure Pax, an invisible force rising from her blood stopped her.
It took her a mont to realize that the restraint was her boss’s doing, and he seed intent on letting the boy carry out his suicidal plan.
Corey was genuinely shaken. She could not understand why her boss would allow this. True, they were not obligated to clean up other people’s sses, but was it not human to help those in need, especially soone with such a noble spirit?
She knew her boss could be greedy and petty, but he was not the kind of man who turned away from injustice or abandoned those who needed help. Yet now he was acting out of character. Why now? Why with Pax? Was she missing sothing?
[Wyatt, WTF?] She imdiately sent him a ssage. However, his reply genuinely caught her off guard. [Shut up and watch the birth of a hero.]
’Hero? Who? Pax?’ Corey wondered. The only heroes she had ever known were dead: Corey Park’s father, Earth Corey’s mother, and Corey Park herself. As that realization settled in, a new thought flashed through her mind, and her eyes widened in shock.
[Wyatt, don’t tell you’re planning to use Pax as a pawn in your sche. If you are, I swear to God, even if a hundred centuries passes, I will never forgive you.] Corey imdiately sent another ssage informing her boss that she was against his decision to use her friend’s younger brother.
[What the hell are you smoking? Just shut up and watch the show.] I replied to Corey’s text while sparing so attention from watching Catherine as she argued with Pax. I had to admit, though I would never say it out loud, I was enjoying Catherine’s despair far more than I should have. A part was urging to corrupt her.
"Young Lord, you don’t have to pay for our sins," Catherine cried, realizing that no matter how hard she tried, she could not pull him back from his suicidal path. She could not understand why Pax was so determined to choose this route. When he spoke to her, he made it sound as though it were the only way forward. From what she had heard, that did not seem to be true. They had discussed filing an appeal to an entity, and that option sounded far safer than acting as a double agent within the New Age rchant Guild. So why was her young lord not even considering it?
"Master Wyatt, please, I beg you, help change my young lord’s mind. He doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. He is in over his head," Catherine pleaded, turning to instead of Jack. After spending ti in the Whiteburn manor, she knew Jack would not interfere. His earlier exchange with Pax had already made that clear.
Catherine was not acting out of guilt alone. She truly believed Pax was in over his head. Despite his recent growth in realm and strength, he was still a rookie. He could barely stand against seasoned card apprentices, let alone realm-hopping demon rchants.
She refused to watch her young lord walk toward a foolish and aningless death. As the guardian of Demigod Godson’s treasures, she believed it was her duty to protect his heir as well. The Godson bloodline could not end on her watch, especially not because of her mistake.
"Teacher! Stop it!" Pax shouted at once, clearly not expecting Catherine to drag into this out of desperation. He quickly turned to . "Master Wyatt, please forgive her. My teacher doesn’t know what she’s saying in her desperation."
"Pax, she’s right. What you’re trying to do is extrely dangerous. There’s a high chance you won’t walk out of their headquarters in the physical plane the sa way you walked in. I know your heart is in the right place, and there’s no sha in choosing the safe and steady route," I said, reinforcing Catherine’s argunt. I wanted to see how Pax would react when offered a way out.
"Master Wyatt, you don’t have to test . I know what I’m doing," Pax replied without hesitation, his voice steady and firm. He truly looked ready to see this reckless plan through to the end. Pax turned to Catherine and tried to assure her, "Teacher, trust . I’ve thought this through."
"No. Not until you tell why you refuse to file the appeal as Master Wyatt suggested and keep acting as if risking your life is the only way to resolve the situation," Catherine demanded. She needed to understand why her young lord was so determined to carry out this reckless plan. If she knew his reason, she might find a way to change his mind.
"That’s because it isn’t as simple as Master Wyatt made it sound. To file an appeal, I would need solid evidence or imnse wealth to secure my safety. I have neither. Even if, by so miracle, I won the appeal and survived, all I would accomplish is saving myself. But if I follow this path and sohow succeed, I won’t just save myself. I’ll save the whole world. I didn’t need much ti to decide. I chose the latter. Even if it’s the last thing I ever do, I want to go down fighting, not just for myself, but for sothing far greater and more aningful," Pax said, laying his resolve bare for all of us to see.
