Ava’s POV

Nina’s car humd quietly as we drove away from the Storm Valley Pack house. The silence between us was heavy, filled with my unspoken heartbreak and Nina’s concerned glances. I couldn’t hold it in any longer—the dam broke, and tears flooded down my face.

"He was with her just last week, Nina. Last fucking week!" My voice cracked as I clutched the tissue Nina handed . "He’s been begging for my forgiveness, sending gifts, making all these promises, and anwhile he’s still seeing Sophia behind my back!"

Nina kept her eyes on the road but reached over to squeeze my hand. "Oh honey, I’m so sorry."

"I’m such an idiot," I sobbed, pressing the tissue against my eyes. "Such a complete and total fool. He wrote this card saying he’d do everything to prove he could be the most important person in my life." I laughed bitterly. "What a joke. I actually believed him for a minute there."

"You’re not an idiot, Ava," Nina said firmly. "Joseph Garcia is the idiot. A lying, cheating idiot who doesn’t deserve your tears."

I sniffled, trying to regain control of my emotions. "I just don’t understand. If he wanted Sophia so badly, why not just be with her? Why play these gas with ?"

"Because n like Joseph want everything—the devoted girlfriend waiting at ho and the side piece for when they get bored," Nina replied.

I sobbed."I really thought he might be different. I felt sothing with him I’ve never felt before."

Nina sighed. "That’s what makes it hurt so much. Listen, Ava, take tomorrow and the weekend off. You need to rest and clear your head."

"But Caroline just got back, and there’s so much to do—"

"And it will all still be there on Monday," Nina cut off gently. "Caroline is safe, Eleanor and Kyle are handling everything, and Alpha Draven’s just happy to have her back. The world won’t fall apart if you take three days for yourself."

I nodded, exhaustion settling deep into my bones. "Thank you, Nina."

"And Ava?" she added, her voice serious. "Stop thinking about Joseph Garcia. "

The rest of the ride passed in silence, my mind replaying every mont with Joseph, every smile, every touch, every promise. By the ti Nina pulled up to my apartnt building, I’d cried myself into a state of numb emptiness.

"Text if you need anything," Nina said as I got out. "Anything at all."

I managed a weak smile and headed inside.

The apartnt was dimly lit when I entered, but I could see my mother’s silhouette in the living room. She rose from the couch as I closed the door behind .

"Ava," she said, sounding a little worried. "You look terrible."

"Thanks, Mom. Just what every girl wants to hear," I replied, dropping my purse on the counter.

My mother, Odelia, was a striking woman—tall with black hair and piercing eyes that seed to see right through you.

"I heard they found the boy," she said, changing the subject.

I nodded, collapsing onto the couch. "Yes. Thank you for helping. I don’t know how you found those leads, but you saved his life."

Odelia shrugged elegantly. "I just happened to track them with magic. It was nothing."

"It wasn’t nothing, Mom. It was everything to Caroline and Liam," I said sincerely, grateful for my mother’s help. "Thank you."

"You’re this upset again because of that Alpha? Joseph?" she asked, her tone sharpening.

"It’s over," I said sadly. "Completely over."

A small, satisfied smile curved her lips. "Good. He was never right for you, Ava. "

"Yes," I conceded, too tired to argue. "You were right."

"You should get so rest. You look drained." My mother ca over and touched my hair.

I stood, swaying slightly from exhaustion. "Yeah. Goodnight, Mom."

"Goodnight, Ava."

I crashed onto my bed without bothering to change, and rcifully, sleep claid almost instantly.

In my dreams, a voice called out to , soft but insistent. I found myself standing in a misty forest where fog drifted between the trees. Gentle moonlight filtered through the canopy above, casting everything in a silvery glow. The voice kept calling my na, but no matter which direction I turned, I couldn’t find its source. The mist seed to swirl around , and the moonbeams danced across the forest floor as I searched desperately for whoever was calling to .

Sunlight stread across my bed, and when I woke up, I felt exhausted, as if I hadn’t slept well at all and had been running all night. For one blissful mont, I forgot everything about Joseph, Sophia, and Caroline’s kidnapping, but then reality crashed back, and the hollow ache returned to my chest.

I dragged myself to the bathroom, splashing cold water on my face. The woman in the mirror looked pale and drawn, with dark circles under her eyes.

As I made my way to the kitchen, I caught the aroma of fresh coffee. My mother sat at the kitchen table, a mug in one hand and a grimoire in the other—typical morning reading for a witch of her caliber.

"You’re up early," I comnted, pouring myself coffee.

Odelia closed her book, studying with unusual intensity. "How did you sleep?"

"Like the dead," I replied, adding cream to my coffee.

"And how do you feel this morning?"

I shrugged. "Tired. Sad. Angry. The usual post-breakup cocktail."

"I ant physically," she clarified, her eyes narrowing slightly.

The question caught off guard. "Physically? Fine, I guess. Why?"

Odelia set down her mug, her expression unreadable. "How has your magic been lately? Any changes?"

I frowned, leaning against the counter. "It’s been... nothing unusual, actually. Only that day during the tracking ritual, when I was affected by Liam’s emotions, I felt a surge of intense energy."

"I see." She pursed her lips, seeming to choose her words carefully. "And have you noticed anything else? Any unusual sensations? Changes in your strength, your intuition, or... anything else?"

Sothing in her tone made uneasy. "I’ve been having weird dreams. Sotis I feel like there’s sothing... inside , trying to get out. Is that normal? For a witch’s powers to develop this way?"

My mother’s fingers tightened around her mug. "Your witch heritage is awakening more fully. It’s natural to experience so... physical manifestations."

"But why now?" I pressed, sensing she wasn’t telling everything.
