Tonight, he left.
Her heart felt as if it had been torn open, with pain cascading like fresh blood.
She never thought her reaction would be so intense. It wasn’t until this mont, when the suffocating feeling hit her, that she realized how difficult self-deception really was.
Rebecca Quentin gently pressed her aching wound, recalling Howard Geoffrey’s expression when he answered the phone monts ago.
He had always been soone who hardly showed his emotions. Rarely did anything bring visible changes to his facial expression, but earlier, urgency was plainly written on his face.
She wasn’t naive. She could broadly guess what he would do tonight...
Once the plan succeeded, he certainly had follow-up tasks to handle. These past few days, when he claid to be at the office handling pre-holiday matters, he was actually dealing with post-plan issues.
Knowing him as well as she did, always planning ahead, if taking her on vacation was his preditated plan, he should have already handled the work. If not, as he said—Skytop wouldn’t collapse without a boss.
Of course, she wasn’t complaining; it was just that when she saw the hospital record in the file, a small seed of doubt sprouted.
Why did his post-plan tasks include Alice Robinson?
Alice and Chester Robinson had constantly hurt her, so wasn’t she supposed to see Alice’s tragic end once the plan succeeded?
Why did he personally arrange Alice’s hospital admission, and what did that date, coinciding with their wedding, an?
Could she suspect that the wedding day, he actually left the ceremony without a word because of Alice?
She always believed that in his world, the person he cherished most was her. Therefore, she never wanted to understand his entire plan; she simply needed to know he cared for her, that his passion for romance and affection was entirely hers, that she was the woman he cherished most in the world, and thus she needn’t concern herself with others of no importance.
But tonight, she felt unsettled.
She even had a hunch that the follow-up plan he was executing tonight might involve Alice, and her intuition was always accurate.
She asked herself if she had done well in fulfilling the duties of a wife, trusting him wholeheartedly, loving him, but won are petty; she now desperately wanted to know why he felt such compassion for Alice.
Tossing and turning, still unable to sleep, Rebecca Quentin finally leaned against the headboard with the quilt around her.
After pondering for a while, she eventually picked up her phone from the bedside table and dialed a number.
The call connected quickly, and Isabella Joanna’s surprised voice ca through, "My God... isn’t it the middle of the night in New York? You’re calling now, aren’t you supposed to be sleeping with your Mr. Geoffrey?"
Rebecca Quentin chuckled softly, "Even if I were with him, it doesn’t take the whole night, does it? Is your General Leonard always an all-nighter?"
Isabella Joanna, not expecting the teasing to turn back on her, blushed deeply, "Darn it, since you’ve been with Mr. Geoffrey, your pure heart has been completely darkened by him..."
Rebecca Quentin laughed joyfully.
Isabella Joanna awkwardly changed the subject, "So, what do you want to ask ? Don’t tell you’re asking how to wear those few sets of lingerie I sent you?"
Rebecca Quentin felt embarrassed, "You underestimate , don’t you? Do you still think I’m the naive girl I was at twenty?"
Isabella Joanna chuckled, "Yes, you’ve certainly beco seasoned... evidenced by the fact you sleep until afternoon every day."
Rebecca Quentin finally admitted defeat, cheeks blushing, complaining, "Hey, if you tease any more, I’ll tell your General Leonard how experienced you were in teaching to wear lingerie to seduce a future husband..."
Isabella Joanna imdiately grew nervous, "Oh my, Roger would definitely be mortified... I’ve explained to you already, back then, I was rely trying to show off... I was just a pure young woman myself!" Just slightly more experienced than a certain woman as pure as a blank slate.
Rebecca Quentin laughed and said, "So now you’re holding your secrets in my hands?"
Isabella Joanna nodded repeatedly, "Alright, Lady Geoffrey, whatever you instruct, I’ll do imdiately."
