"So you were planning to hide everything from and pin all the bla on Vivian Lindsey..." Becca’s slender body trembled slightly from the emotional upheaval.
"Becca... forgive my selfishness."
Becca lowered her head, her expression pained.
Howard Geoffrey gently cupped Becca’s face, making her look at him, and said softly, "Chester Robinson’s life shouldn’t be ruined like this."
"But if she takes the bla, she’ll spend all her life in prison..."
"Becca..."
Becca’s hands climbed up Howard’s arms, gripping him earnestly, "Maybe after she gets out, she can reform; people can change..."
Howard interrupted Becca before she could finish, "Becca, she won’t change."
Becca furrowed her brows, staring at Howard’s resolute handso face, "You’ve decided to do this, haven’t you?"
"Yes."
Becca shook her head forcefully, her body slowly retreating.
Howard suddenly pulled Becca into his embrace, not allowing her to back away, holding her tightly, "I know she’s your mother, and even if she’s done all those bad things, you can’t bring yourself to betray her... but Chester shouldn’t be buried alongside her mistakes."
Becca leaned against Howard’s chest, her eyes clouded with tears becoming vacant.
Hotel.
At night, the cold wind gently caressed Becca’s icy face. She wrapped her arms around herself, calmly standing on the hotel balcony.
Howard approached her at so indeterminate ti, draping his suit jacket over her shoulders, "It’s cold, you’ll get sick like this, co inside!"
Becca glared up at Howard, "So your main reason for accompanying to T City this ti was to deal with clearing Chester’s na."
Howard truthfully replied, "Yes."
Becca shook her head, turned around, and redirected her gaze to the distant skyline lit by the city lights.
Howard reached out to hold Becca’s frail shoulders, speaking seriously, "Can you understand ?"
"I don’t know..." Becca swallowed the bitterness in her throat, "I don’t want to see Chester’s life ruined, but I also..."
Becca lowered her head again and shook it, "Maybe you were right to keep it from ."
"Don’t think about Vivian Lindsey anymore... I’ll spend a few days here handling Chester’s matter, and when we return ho, all of this will be over."
"Can you let have so peace alone?"
"I can, but not here... go back to the room, I’ll give you ti and space."
Becca nodded slightly.
Howard held Becca, turning and walking into the room.
That night, Howard didn’t sleep with Becca, giving her a full night to think.
The next day, Howard went to the prison.
At this mont, Howard sat opposite Vivian Lindsey, his expression indifferent.
Vivian was the first to break the silence, "I knew you’d co to see ... what, you’re surprised I’d help you?"
Howard leaned back against the chair, his tone flat, "Whether you say it or not, I won’t let Becca leave ."
Vivian chuckled lightly, "I’m surprised my foolish daughter could make you fall in love with her..."
"It’s also a surprise to that you’d value a mother-daughter bond."
Vivian tilted her head, smiling, "You’ve done so much in secret to make Becca misunderstand ; if I told her yesterday, would she have divorced you right then?"
Howard’s composed face held a faint smile, slightly raising his brow, "Why don’t you try?"
Vivian squinted her eyes, a hint of hatred flashing in them, "Do you think I don’t want to?"
Howard spoke with a restrained intensity, "So I won’t thank you."
Vivian snorted, scrutinizing Howard’s expression, finally saying, "You know why I’m doing this."
Howard bluntly said, "I can assure you of one thing, I don’t treat won like my father did. No matter how alluring the woman, I prefer to stay true to one."
Howard’s sharp words were filled with irony and ridicule.
Vivian was left speechless for a mont, "I know why you’ve co today... even if you hadn’t, I would have done the sa."
Howard stood up, buttoning his suit, and said coldly, "I won’t go easy on you."
"Wait, can I ask you to do sothing for ?"
Howard stood with his back to Vivian, exuding an icy aura yet not taking a step.
Vivian stood up, handing Howard a prepared letter, "Could you deliver this letter to Chester for ?"
"You’ve probably forgotten, he’s lying in the hospital now, possibly spending all his life in that bed."
"I... I think he’ll wake up."
"Sorry, I’m not in the habit of doing good deeds."
With that, Howard continued walking.
"Howard!!"
Vivian called out loudly, making Howard stop.
Vivian, always proud, had lowered herself for Chester to this extent, reaching her limit. At this mont, she stood up, softened her voice, and urged, "Please."
There was a long silence.
The prison guard reminded them that visiting ti had ended.
Vivian placed the letter on the table, following the guard back toward her cell.
Her steps were heavy, for the first ti stripping away a lifeti of pride before Howard.
As Vivian’s figure nearly disappeared into the confines of imprisonnt, she heard Howard’s flat, emotionless voice.
"It’s not for you, it’s for Chester."
Vivian was montarily stunned before understanding the aning behind Howard’s words; when she turned back, the handso young man, reminiscent of his father in his youth, gave her nothing but a desolate back.
Vivian said no more, slowly stepping forward.
And as she moved, she heard Howard’s soft voice again, "I will love her all my life."
The visiting room returned to emptiness, the entire world seeming to fall silent.
Howard’s phone, in the pocket of his suit, vibrated. He thought it was a call but checked to see it was a text ssage.
It was from Becca.
The screen displayed the ssage content — I’ve thought it over, and perhaps your decision was right, but so much has happened recently leaving my heart in turmoil. I want to quietly spend so ti alone. Don’t co to find ; when I’ve sorted it out, I’ll co to you.
Cetery.
The autumn wind was chilly as Becca stood before a white tombstone, wrapped in a black woolen coat.
